Royals | Jason Vargas needs Tommy John surgery

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 14:24:44 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) requires Tommy John surgery and will not be able to rehab the torn left ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, according to manager Ned Yost.

Fantasy Tip: It is safe to rule Jason Vargas out until late 2016, if not 2017. He isn't worth stashing in the majority of keeper/dyantasy leagues, either. Kris Medlen could have his move to the rotation sped up, or the Royals could also look outside the organization for a replacement. Keep an eye out for where the Royals turn.

Royals | Jason Vargas to DL

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 11:47:24 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, July 22, with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas' season is likely over as UCL tears usually mean Tommy John surgery. There's no confirmation on that yet, however. Yordano Ventura ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) was brought back up to take his rotation spot. Give him a start or two to get back on track.

Royals | Jason Vargas scheduled for MRI

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 19:25:43 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) left his start Tuesday, July 21, due to left medial elbow pain. He is scheduled for an MRI Wednesday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas sounds like he will miss some time, but nothing will be official until his examination Wednesday. Yordano Ventura was sent down Tuesday, but he might be on stand-by and an option to slide into the rotation if Vargas misses time. The trade talk for Johnny Cueto and others might ramp up as well.

Royals | Jason Vargas leaves start

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 18:11:51 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) left his start Tuesday, July 21, against the Pittsburgh Pirates after suffering an apparent left elbow injury.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas ($4,700; or 9.4% of cap) was angry as he left. He has been dealing with a flexor strain issue, so perhaps he aggravated that injury. Yordano Ventura was sent down to Class AAA Omaha, but he might need to stick around if Vargas hits the 15-day disabled list.

Royals | Jason Vargas to rehab Monday

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 10:43:07 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) had no problems after a 60-pitch simulated game Wednesday, July 8, and he'll make a rehab start for Class A Northwest Arkansas Monday, July 13. Vargas is expected to return to the rotation after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) won't excite fantasy owners that much upon his return, since he had posted a 4.10 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in eight starts this year. Vargas was only striking out 5.4 hitters per nine innings, too. However, with a guaranteed rotation spot when he's ready, he'll be useful to owners in need of pitching in deep mixed and AL-only formats.

Royals | Jason Vargas close to returning

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 18:32:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) is expected to be activated from the disabled list after the All-Star break. He has been sidelined since early June.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore owners should avoid using Vargas ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) in his first game back so that he can prove he is both healthy and effective.

Royals | Jason Vargas to throw 60 Wednesday

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 18:01:16 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) was supposed to throw 60 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday, July 7, but that will be pushed to Wednesday, July 8, due to the doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) isn't commonly an option on FantasyScore due to his low strikeout rate of 5.40 batters per nine innings. Vargas really only holds fantasy value in AL-only leagues.

Royals | Jason Vargas throws

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 06:45:35 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (elbow) played catch Tuesday, June 16, and manager Ned Yost said Vargas may not require a rehab assignment. Vargas is eligible to return June 24, but it's unclear if he'll be ready by then.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas is a matchup play on FantasyScore upon return.

Royals | Jason Vargas to DL

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 08:13:11 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (forearm) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, June 13.

Fantasy Tip: RHP Joe Blanton is scheduled to start in place of Vargas Tuesday, June 16, against the Milwaukee Brewers. Blanton should be avoided despite the excellent matchup.

Royals | Jason Vargas toughs it out in win

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 21:33:47 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas (groin) was hit near the groin by a line drive Monday, June 8, against the Minnesota Twins. He was hit in the midsection in the fifth inning, but remained in the game to record four more outs.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas allowed just five hits with no walks over six innings in the win, needing just 70 pitches. It was one of his finest outings of the season. At just $3,700 (or 7.4% of cap) he would be a steal in FantasyScore if he continues to pitch this well.
