Giants | Cory Gearrin grabs save in rare chance

Sun, 15 May 2016 05:03:09 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Cory Gearrin pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his first save of the season during the Giants' 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, May 14. RP Santiago Casilla needed a rest day, which opened the door for Gearrin.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla doesn't have a rock-solid hold on the closer role, as he has blown three saves already this season, and Javier Lopez collected a save for the Giants Thursday, May 12. With Casilla picking up the save Friday, May 13, three different relievers have registered a save in three consecutive games for San Francisco. For now, continue to hold Casilla and view him as the No. 1 saves candidate in the bullpen, but this could become a committee at some point, if it hasn't already. Gearrin, Lopez and Hunter Strickland are all potential grabs in deep leagues for save chasers.

Giants | Santiago Casilla available to close Friday

Fri, 13 May 2016 17:32:49 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla is available to close against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, May 13, even though he was pulled during a save situation versus the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, May 12, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla's grasp on the ninth-inning role was shaky entering the 2016 season, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Giants turn to Hunter Strickland to close games down the line. Strickland should be rostered in NL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues and by owners who are desperate for saves. Sergio Romo (forearm) could also be considered for the closer's role but he is currently on the disabled list.

Giants | Santiago Casilla upset with manager

Fri, 13 May 2016 11:44:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla was upset with manager Bruce Bochy for pulling him out of a save chance with the bases loaded against the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday, May 12. "I understand we have an excellent option in Lopez," Casilla said. "But if you're going to take the ball, at least talk to me. Tell me the reason, 'You've been pitching too much.' Don't just take the ball and say nothing. It is not a kid. It is a man on the mound." Casilla has blown three saves in 10 chances this year but has a 1.93 ERA and is allowing fewer than a runner per inning. Bochy said he'll have a talk with Casilla after Thursday's game.

Fantasy Tip: This is a situation that certainly warrants attention from fantasy owners now if you're chasing saves. Casilla was on shaky ground as a fantasy closer coming into the year, and this puts more urgency on saves speculators to grab Hunter Strickland. Sergio Romo could be in line for save chances down the road, too, if Casilla is demoted. Keep in mind this could turn into a committee, which would make it more of a headache in predicting who will get the ball in the ninth.

Giants | Santiago Casilla removed in save situation

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:41:35 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a save situation Thursday, May 12, and was pulled for RP Javier Lopez, who wound up with the save. Casilla showed his displeasure with manager Bruce Bochy when he was pulled from the game. Lopez came in to face 3B Jake Lamb, who was 0-for-3 in his career against Lopez and 15-for-102 (.147) in his career against lefties.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla has seven saves but has already blown three this year, and he came into the year on shaky ground as a second or third fantasy closer. This development is certainly notable, and with Sergio Romo on the DL, Hunter Strickland would likely be next in line for saves if Bochy wants to demote Casilla. Grab Strickland in deeper leagues if you're in need of saves.

Giants | Santiago Casilla not the problem

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 16:49:44 -0700

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy isn't worried about RP Santiago Casilla's two blown saves early in the season. "I don't see our problem being our closer," Bochy said.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla is a shaky second fantasy closer because of his age (35) and his suspect control on the mound with the game on the line for the Giants. He had 38 saves for San Fran last year but only had one season of 20-plus saves before that, so a lack of a track record is concerning, too. With Sergio Romo on the DL, Hunter Strickland is the handcuff for worried Casilla owners.

Giants | Santiago Casilla throws bullpen

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 13:10:46 -0800

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla (flu) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, March 9, and looked sharp, according to pitching coach Dave Righetti. Casilla will make his Cactus League debut Saturday, March 12.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla saved 38 games in 2015 with a 2.79 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP and a 9.6 K/9, and he is currently projected to handle the ninth inning in 2016. However, Hunter Strickland and Sergio Romo will be breathing down Casilla's neck, and the incumbent closer should be viewed as nothing more than a middling No. 2 reliever.

Giants | Santiago Casilla back from illness

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 17:06:16 -0800

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla (flu) will throw live batting practice before he enters a spring game.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla is on shaky ground in San Francisco, and Sergio Romo or Hunter Strickland wait in the wings if he falters. His spotty control gets him in trouble often, and he's a No. 2 fantasy stopper, at best. Speculate on Romo or Strickland in deeper leagues.

Giants | Santiago Casilla is the closer

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 16:32:25 -0800

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla is the team's closer to begin the year.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla might be one of the shakier closer options with a cemented job entering 2016. His control is suspect, and he shouldn't be considered close to elite at all for a reliever. Sergio Romo and Hunter Strickland are chomping at the bit should Casilla falter at all.

Giants | Frisco bullpen not getting it done

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 18:10:41 -0700

San Francisco Giants RPs Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo have been struggling lately, particularly against left-handed hitters. Over the past 20 at-bats, lefties are hitting .328 against Casilla, and .450 off of Romo. RP Javier Lopez was used Monday, Aug. 3, against a lefty to start the ninth inning, but manager Bruce Bochy plans to stick with Romo setting up Casilla for now.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners in standard formats have been frustrated with the duo, but for now it appears to be status quo in San Francisco as Bochy lets each pitcher work through their problems rather than demote them to less stressful situations to iron out their issues.

Giants | Santiago Casilla to remain closer?

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 11:45:27 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla blew the save against the Atlanta Braves Monday, Aug. 3, which led to a loss for the Giants in the 12th inning. It was his fifth blown save of the year, but Giants TV announcer Duane Kuiper doesn't think manager Bruce Bochy will make a change in the ninth inning. Casilla is 4-2 this year with a 3.32 ERA and 27 saves, and he had converted seven straight saves before his blown save Monday. Kuiper doesn't think RP Hunter Strickland is a candidate to replace Casilla.

Fantasy Tip: If Casilla were to be demoted from ninth-inning duties, it'd likely be Sergio Romo, and not Strickland, moving into the role. Romo has experience closing with the Giants. If you're looking for saves and weren't able to land a reliever that moved into the role at the trade deadline, Romo might be your ticket for saves down the stretch if Casilla comes unraveled.
