Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon McCarthy adopted a new offseason routing this year to help him avoid the seasonal shoulder inflammation that he has experienced. As a result, McCarthy is consistently hitting 94 mph with his fastball in his first two starts, and he thinks he's stronger and better prepared to hit his goal of 200 innings for the season. McCarthy's high for a season is 170 2/3 innings.
McCarthy had Sam Mulroy, a neighbor and personal trainer, work with him in the offseason to keep him in shape. McCarthy's workouts included more heavy lifting with free weights a staple of the program. "In the past, I'd work out in different workout facilities that trained athletes, and I realized that wasn't specialized enough," McCarthy said. "I knew what I wanted to accomplish, I just needed someone to help guide me through it. The relationship worked out very well, where it was passing ideas back and forth. He definitely taught me how to get stronger, and we shoe-horned that in with getting baseball stronger."
Fantasy Tip: Until McCarthy goes a full season without injury, we'll continue to be skeptical. But the velocity is a good indication that he's completely healthy right now. The elite control makes him worth owning in deep enough mixed leagues in the right matchups.

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon McCarthy was sitting between 91 and 95 mph with his fastball in his outing Monday, March 10, where he allowed three hits and a walk in five scoreless innings, and he was receiving strong reviews from the coaching staff. "That's shown up early. I feel like myself again. With that, in games I'm sharper, more focused, and the results kind of follow that. Now it's just staying in that same place," McCarthy said. McCarthy said the after-effects of being struck in the head by a line drive in 2012 lingered into last season.
Fantasy Tip: Health issues have eroded McCarthy's dominance the past few seasons, but if he is past all of that, there could be something here. His fastball life is a positive development, and he still remains an elite ground-ball pitcher. There could be value here off the waiver wire and in NL leagues.

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon McCarthy said he will not be wearing Major League Baseball's new protective caps for pitchers. McCarthy tested the new hats while throwing off a mound, playing catch and running and said, "I won't wear it in its current form." He doesn't consider the current cap to be "a major league-ready product." McCarthy said the hat is too big, and pitchers will be away of the size difference during competition. The protective cap also adds seven ounces of weight, which makes it "too hot," according to McCarthy.

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) threw from flat ground on Wednesday, June 26. McCarthy was supposed to throw a bullpen session earlier in the week but didn't because he felt fatigue in his right shoulder, according to manager Kirk Gibson.
Fantasy Tip: McCarthy threw a bullpen at the end of last week, so this isn't really progress, but at least he didn't feel soreness. If it's just a bit of a dead period following inactivity, the righty may be close to making actual progress. He's supposedly been pain-free for weeks, but if he doesn't make significant headway soon, it looks like fantasy owners won't see him until after the All-Star break.
