Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brandon McCarthy (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Thursday, April 30.
Fantasy Tip: It is safe to drop McCarthy in all seasonal fantasy formats, and likely everywhere outside of cavernous keeper/dynasty formats. Keep an eye out for Julio Urias, who is a young left-handed pitching phenom, and could earn a rotation spot later in the year. In the meantime, Scott Baker ($3,000, 6.0% of cap), who started Sunday, April 26, and Carlos Frias are candidates to start, however neither projects to have any significant fantasy impact.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brandon McCarthy (elbow) has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and is done for the rest of the season.
Fantasy Tip: You can now drop McCarthy ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) in all yearly formats. Scott Baker, who filled in for a spot start yesterday against the San Diego Padres, could be in line to jump into the starting rotation as a result. Carlos Frias is another candidate to enter the fray. Both would be weak starting pitching options at FantasyScore. Julio Urias, the young left-handed pitching phenom, might be the long-term solution for a rotation spot later in the year.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brandon McCarthy (elbow) left his start against the San Diego Padres Saturday, April 25, in the sixth inning, due to tightness in his right elbow. After the game, he admitted to reporters that he has been bothered by elbow issues for more than a week and said he should have left the game in the second inning. McCarthy is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Monday, April 27.
Fantasy Tip: McCarthy ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) is expected to miss at least one start and could wind up on the disabled list depending on what the MRI exam results reveal.

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said the team's signings of Brett Anderson and Brandon McCarthy have taken them out of the running for any big-name starting pitchers that remain in free agency. "We don't comment on specific free agents or specific economic classes of free agents, but like I said, our focus on the starting pitching side is going to be depth options either at Triple-A or guys who could potentially serve as a long man in the bullpen," Zaidi said.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brandon McCarthy has an injury clause built into his four-year, $48 million contract. The Dodgers would pay McCarthy a $5 million club option in 2019 if he missed more than 179 innings while on the disabled list. If McCarthy misses between 119 and 179 innings, the club option is $8 million.

Free-agent SP Max Scherzer (Tigers) still remains a possibility for the New York Yankees, even though the Yanks have privately discussed avoiding Scherzer and free-agent SPs Jon Lester (Athletics) and James Shields (Royals). The team could also re-sign Brandon McCarthy after trading away SP Shane Greene.

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard isn't the primary focus of the Kansas City Royals. Instead, the team is "concentrating on pitching." The Royals have basically no trade interest in Howard, and he's not even a fit with the current offense. The Royals have talked to free-agent SP Ervin Santana (Braves) and have looked at free-agent SP Brandon McCarthy (Yankees), Jason Hammel (Athletics) and others.
