Angels | Geovany Soto ready for rehab stint

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 12:17:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) is beginning a rehab assignment with Class AAA Salt Lake Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Soto was having a nice season (.283/.338/.483 slash line through 67 plate appearances) before requiring surgery to repair his torn right meniscus. Still, he is best viewed as a low-end backstop in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues once healthy and back with the Angels.

Angels | Geovany Soto making progress

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 19:15:35 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) has made progress in his recovery from knee surgery, but manager Mike Scioscia said Monday, June 20, that Soto still has to go through some agility tests, do some blocking drills and catch more in the bullpen before he is ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. All of those things might come by the end of next week.

Fantasy Tip: Soto should be avoided by all fantasy owners until he can officially return and prove his health in a couple of games without any setbacks or noticeable rust. He was hitting .283 before he went down to injury.

Angels | Geovany Soto to take batting practice

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 18:13:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) was scheduled to take batting practice Saturday, June 18, and he could begin a rehab assignment next week.

Fantasy Tip: Soto was hitting .283 before going down with a knee injury, and he could be worth stashing in two-catcher formats if you need help behind the plate.

Angels | Geovany Soto starts throwing

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 15:09:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) has started throwing, but has not begun hitting or squatting. He had knee surgery two weeks ago.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is more of a name for deep two-catcher leagues, though he could also be of interest to owners in AL-only formats, as he was hitting decently before going down with injury. His eventual return will also disintegrate the value of intriguing youngster Jett Bandy.

Angels | Geovany Soto needs knee surgery

Wed, 18 May 2016 16:04:07 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto (knee) has a torn right miniscus and will require surgery. He will miss four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Soto was holding his own for the Angels, but he likely can be replaced in all but two-catcher and AL-only leagues. In his absence, Carlos Perez projects to see the majority of starts behind the dish. He has a .176/.238/.230 slash line this season and next to no fantasy value.

Angels | Carlos Perez, Brendan Ryan out

Sun, 15 May 2016 12:14:36 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez and SS Brendan Ryan are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez Sunday, May 15. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting seventh, while SS Gregorio Petit will start at shortstop and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is hitting .231 with one home run and one RBI this month but should still be a starting candidate in two-catcher leagues and some daily fantasy leagues. Petit has gone 2-for-5 since joining the Angels but is not a great option at this point.

Angels | There is still a LAA catcher platoon

Mon, 02 May 2016 15:22:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto has started three of the past four games after C Carlos Perez started 15 of the first 22 outings, but manager Mike Scioscia still says the two catchers will split time behind the plate.

"I don't think the depth chart has changed," Scioscia said Monday, May 2. "Nothing has changed since we talked in the spring. We're going to need both of these guys. The playing time will certainly be split on performance, behind the plate and at the plate, primarily behind the plate."

Fantasy Tip: There is a stark difference offensively, as Soto is hitting .344 to start the season and Perez owns a .148 batting average. Clearly, neither backstop is going to run away with all the starts, but in the immediate future, Soto is the best fantasy asset. He is worth a look in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats as a low-end option.

Angels | Geovany Soto draws another start

Mon, 02 May 2016 12:50:25 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto is batting seventh against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson Monday, May 2. C Carlos Perez is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has started three of the past four games behind the dish for the Angels, and he has a rock-solid .344/.382/.656 slash line through 35 at-bats with six runs, three home runs and seven RBI to start the season. The veteran backstop appears to be earning more playing time, which makes Soto a potential add in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats.

Angels | Three Angels not in the lineup

Sun, 01 May 2016 11:13:13 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega, C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Sunday, May 1. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Shane Robinson will start in left field and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has at least one hit in six of his last seven starts and has six RBI during that span. Soto could be used in two-catcher leagues. Owners should avoid using Pennington and Robinson for the time being.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Sunday, April 24. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has played well in his limited playing time this season and has a .316 batting average with three RBI. Soto could be a sleeper option for owners in daily fantasy leagues.
