Angels | There is still a LAA catcher platoon

Mon, 02 May 2016 15:22:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto has started three of the past four games after C Carlos Perez started 15 of the first 22 outings, but manager Mike Scioscia still says the two catchers will split time behind the plate.

"I don't think the depth chart has changed," Scioscia said Monday, May 2. "Nothing has changed since we talked in the spring. We're going to need both of these guys. The playing time will certainly be split on performance, behind the plate and at the plate, primarily behind the plate."

Fantasy Tip: There is a stark difference offensively, as Soto is hitting .344 to start the season and Perez owns a .148 batting average. Clearly, neither backstop is going to run away with all the starts, but in the immediate future, Soto is the best fantasy asset. He is worth a look in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats as a low-end option.

Angels | Geovany Soto draws another start

Mon, 02 May 2016 12:50:25 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto is batting seventh against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson Monday, May 2. C Carlos Perez is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has started three of the past four games behind the dish for the Angels, and he has a rock-solid .344/.382/.656 slash line through 35 at-bats with six runs, three home runs and seven RBI to start the season. The veteran backstop appears to be earning more playing time, which makes Soto a potential add in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats.

Angels | Three Angels not in the lineup

Sun, 01 May 2016 11:13:13 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega, C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Sunday, May 1. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Shane Robinson will start in left field and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has at least one hit in six of his last seven starts and has six RBI during that span. Soto could be used in two-catcher leagues. Owners should avoid using Pennington and Robinson for the time being.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Sunday, April 24. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Angels | Geovany Soto hurts former team

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 23:29:32 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Geovany Soto had a pair of hits and an RBI Monday, April 18, against the Chicago White Sox to push his average to .375.

Fantasy Tip: Soto had hit safely in four straight outings, and he has a run scored in four of the past five games. He is still only worth using as a No. 2 fantasy option in AL-only leagues, but keep him in mind in DFS when he gets a start.

Angels | Carlos Perez, Johnny Giavotella out

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 09:03:19 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco Saturday, April 16. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto and Pennington have received limited playing time over the first two weeks of the season. Soto could be a sleeper option for owners in daily fantasy leagues, but owners in most leagues likely will be able to find better options for both positions.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have hurt Soto's outlook the last several years, but he makes for a nice second fantasy catcher with some pop.

Angels | Geovany Soto, Carlos Perez to compete

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:29:30 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Cs Geovany Soto and Carlos Perez will compete for the starting catching job. The Angels would like to see the younger Perez take the next step and win the job, but Soto will see valuable playing time regardless.

Fantasy Tip: Perez is younger and has more offensive upside, so he should be the front-runner for more playing time. Neither catcher is very attractive outside of two-catcher or AL-only formats, though.
