Cubs | Jason Hammel silences the Reds again

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 15:06:25 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel tossed six scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds for the second time in three starts Sunday, April 24, and has yielded a total of two runs in four outings this season.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel, who has worked exactly six innings in each of his starts, yielded three hits and struck out seven Sunday after blanking the Reds on April 14. The 33-year-old has been nearly untouchable thus far and should be primed for another stellar outing Saturday when he is scheduled to face the Atlanta Braves.

Cubs | Jason Hammel churns out gem

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 11:12:59 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel registered his second quality start of the year in as many tries Thursday, April 14, versus the Cincinnati Reds. He tossed six shutout innings, scattering four hits, four walks and striking out three.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel is out to a nice start in 2016, having allowed just that one run in 12 total innings. Generally, he's been better in the season's first half throughout his career, especially the past two seasons when he posted significantly better numbers compared to after the All-Star break. With that in mind, he could be consistently useful up until the Midsummer Classic, at the very least.

Cubs | Jason Hammel beat up by M's

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 20:18:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel was destroyed by the Seattle Mariners in Cactus League action Sunday, March 27, to the tune of eight hits and nine runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Thankfully, the regular season hasn't started yet. Disregard this outing on draft day. Hammel continues to use his slider more with solid results, and he's a nice end-game pick to bolster your rotation depth.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber may catch Jason Hammel

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 09:50:41 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF/C Kyle Schwarber could be the personal catcher for SP Jason Hammel, according to manager Joe Maddon. Hammel was "extremely pleased" to work with Schwarber last season, and would "welcome it 100%" if that's how it plays out.

Fantasy Tip: This is wonderful news for Schwarber owners, as it would ensure his catcher eligibility in fantasy, in addition to his regular duties in the outfield. Already, Schwarber is a trendy pick to break out this season, so this news bumps up his stock even a bit further. As for Hammel, this could be a boost also, if it ensures steady pitching for the veteran right-hander. Hammel was outstanding in the first half last season, but struggled mightily following the All-Star break. Having a personal catcher he feels comfortable with could help him sustain consistency.

Cubs | Jason Hammel, Kyle Hendricks favored

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 14:22:54 -0800

Chicago Cubs SPs Jason Hammel and Kyle Hendricks have the upper hand for the final two starting rotation spots, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel and Hendricks both are upside picks in the latter portions of deep mixed drafts. Hammel's success is tied to his health, while Hendrick's lack of an overpowering arsenal will make him a sleeper.

Cubs | Jason Hammel a changed pitcher

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 15:45:56 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel met with pitching guru Tom House in the offseason, and Hammel was given tips on how to fine tune his routine and thought process of pitching. Hammel also made a slight mechanical adjustment, rotating his shoulder around 30 degrees.

He is using his lower half more and feels that his mechanics are cleaner this spring. Hammel also did exercises to strengthen his core and legs and changed his diet. As a result, he lost 20 pounds in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel struggled in the second half last year, but it may have been because of hamstring issues that lingered. His slider is a true strikeout pitch, and he used it more often to find success. There remains some upside here at the back end of your fake pitching staff.

Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | Jason Hammel looks to extend season

Tue, 20 Oct 2015 22:27:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel gets the start in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) lasted just three innings in his first playoff showing against the Cardinals Oct. 13, allowing two runs with three walks and just two strikeouts. In his first appearances against the Mets May 13, he allowed one run and five hits with one walk and six strikeouts over eight innings in a no-decision. He'll likely have to pitch that well Wednesday if the Cubs hope to avoid the golf course.

Cubs | Jason Hammel likely for Game 4

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 09:01:29 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel is likely to pitch in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Oct. 21, according to manager Joe Maddon. Hammel lasted just three innings in the Cubs' Game 4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series. The other option would be to bring SP Jon Lester back on three days of rest, and Maddon prefers not to do that.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) was limited down the stretch and went six innings just once in his last six starts. He's not the most attractive option in the championship series against a hot Mets club.

Cubs | Jason Hammel doesn't last long

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 21:33:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel allowed two earned runs, three hits and three walks in just three innings in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) didn't last long, and that should be a concern for FantasyScore players heading into the NLCS against either the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets.
