Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | Jason Hammel looks to extend season

Tue, 20 Oct 2015 22:27:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel gets the start in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) lasted just three innings in his first playoff showing against the Cardinals Oct. 13, allowing two runs with three walks and just two strikeouts. In his first appearances against the Mets May 13, he allowed one run and five hits with one walk and six strikeouts over eight innings in a no-decision. He'll likely have to pitch that well Wednesday if the Cubs hope to avoid the golf course.

Cubs | Jason Hammel likely for Game 4

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 09:01:29 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel is likely to pitch in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Oct. 21, according to manager Joe Maddon. Hammel lasted just three innings in the Cubs' Game 4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series. The other option would be to bring SP Jon Lester back on three days of rest, and Maddon prefers not to do that.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) was limited down the stretch and went six innings just once in his last six starts. He's not the most attractive option in the championship series against a hot Mets club.

Cubs | Jason Hammel doesn't last long

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 21:33:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel allowed two earned runs, three hits and three walks in just three innings in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) didn't last long, and that should be a concern for FantasyScore players heading into the NLCS against either the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets.

Cubs | Jason Hammel tabbed for Game 4

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 11:17:22 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel will start in Game 4 of the division series against the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Joe Maddon announced Monday, Oct. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) had a 3.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings this season. However, he struggled in three starts against St. Louis for an ERA of 5.73 in 11 innings. He's relatively cheap on FantasyScore if you want to go with an under-the-radar selection in your second pitching spot tomorrow.

Cubs | Jason Hammel could start Game 4

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 17:43:45 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel could start Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, Oct. 13, if he is not used out of the bullpen earlier in the series, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) struggled down the stretch, posting a 6.46 ERA over five September starts before tossing five scoreless innings against Cincinnati Oct. 1, so he should not be trusted in FantasyScore.

Cubs | Jason Hammel ties career high

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 18:20:02 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel allowed five hits and struck out five over five shutout innings in a win over the Cincinnati Reds Thursday, Oct. 1, and his 10 wins this year tie his career high.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) has struggled later in the year, and he owns a 6.46 ERA in September after posting a 4.88 ERA in August. His overall numbers are still solid, but they are also misleading. He is a risky option at FantasyScore the rest of the way.

Cubs | Jason Hammel struggling of late

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 15:36:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel has gone past the sixth inning just once in his last 10 starts. He owns a 3.33 road ERA on the season and is facing the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't make much sense to use a struggling pitcher like Hammel ($8,600, 17.2% of cap) on the road against the best team in baseball (record-wise) tonight on FantasyScore. Spend your money elsewhere.

Cubs | Jason Hammel struggles against Reds

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 16:15:33 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel allowed four earned runs on seven hits during Chicago's 7-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel entered the game with a 5.40 ERA over his previous seven starts, as he has really struggled down the stretch for the North Siders. Equally concerning is he has pitched into the sixth inning in just one of his last nine outings. Hammel has plenty of upside, but currently there isn't a lot to like about his production on the bump.

Cubs | Jason Hammel solid of late

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 13:11:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last six starts, and he has a 3.59 ERA in his last 11 starts.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) is a fine option in daily leagues while he's pitching well, and he's worth a look tonight on FantasyScore against the Detroit Tigers, even with Miguel Cabrera back from the DL.
