Tigers | Anibal Sanchez struggles again Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 17:07:34 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez (3-6) allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, May 25, with one walk and five strikeouts. It marked the fifth consecutive start where he has given up at least four runs.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez should be avoided in all formats due to his recent struggles, although his ERA actually dropped from 6.23 to 6.04 because three of the runs he allowed Wednesday were unearned. He is slated to make his next start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Tuesday, May 31.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez solid in defeat

Wed, 04 May 2016 17:53:54 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez dropped to 3-3 after losing his latest start Wednesday, May 4, against the Cleveland Indians. He registered seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven.

Fantasy Tip: It won't go down officially as a quality start, but there's more good here than bad from the 32-year-old veteran. Tonight's outing actually marked a season-high in innings for Sanchez, and he also reached seven strikeouts in a game for the third time in six tries. His ERA may not look very desirable at the moment, but Sanchez is showing signs he can settle in comfortably.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez tweaks delivery again

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 14:58:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez tweaked his delivery for the second time this season in his outing Thursday, April 28, opposite the Oakland Athletics. He brought back the rotation that sees him turn his back on the batter.

Fantasy Tip: While he now has three wins on the year after defeating the A's, Sanchez is doing it in ugly fashion, as he currently holds a 6.08 ERA. And after yielding 10 baserunners, including a disastrous seven walks, on Thursday, Sanchez now has a 1.86 WHIP through his first five starts. He's a risky player to start in most leagues, and at this point, owners should only be deploying him if he has an advantageous matchup.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez fans nine Athletics

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:24:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez allowed two runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out nine batters through 5 2/3 innings during the Tigers' 7-3 win Thursday, April 28.

Fantasy Tip: The strikeouts are encouraging, but they're somewhat mitigated by the damage the free passes do to the WHIP column. Sanchez sits with a 6.08 ERA, a 1.86 WHIP and 26 strikeouts through 23 2/3 innings over his first five starts of the season. He is difficult to trust at this stage, but if the veteran can fine-tune his control, there is upside. In deep mixed leagues, Sanchez is worth a roster spot if you're selective with his starts.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez improves to 2-0

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 14:57:00 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez won his second start of the year in as many tries Tuesday, April 12, versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. He logged 5 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits, including one homer. The right-hander also walked three and struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: This is an encouraging start for the 11-year veteran, especially after how he produced one of the worst seasons of his career only last year. Sanchez has some potential in most mixed leagues, as he's contributing solid pitching right now and plays for a team that also hosts a juggernaut of an offense. Thus, he could be someone that winds up winning around 15 ballgames. Give him a look if he's out there.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez wins in first start

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 17:37:09 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez pitched five innings in his first start of 2016 on Wednesday, April 6, versus the Miami Marlins. He allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking three.

Fantasy Tip: A pretty good season debut for the 11-year veteran. While he's years removed from his prime, Sanchez still has something to offer fantasy owners, playing alongside one of the league's best offenses while also being capable of providing decent numbers. There's some appeal here in deeper leagues.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez could be No. 2 starter

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 09:11:03 -0700

Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said SP Anibal Sanchez threw 65-70 pitches in a minor-league game Saturday, March 26, and the team hasn't ruled out having him start the second game of the regular season against the Miami Marlins April 6, if he can get his pitch count up to 90. Sanchez is slated to make one final Grapefruit League start before the season begins.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez was slowed by right triceps inflammation during the early portion of spring training camp. The 32-year-old right-hander went 10-10 with a 4.99 ERA in 25 starts while allowing a league-high 29 gopher balls last year and should not be viewed as anything more than a SP4 due to injury concerns.

Tigers | Detroit trio to start regular season

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 23:06:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers SPs Justin Verlander, Mike Pelfrey and Jordan Zimmermann will start the first three games of the regular season, with SP Anibal Sanchez possibly working in the back end of the rotation to start.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander has had a strong spring and is the best bet of the Detroit pitchers for fantasy purposes, while Zimmermann can be a force in his first foray into the AL if he can stay healthy. Pelfrey is more of an AL-only fantasy option, although it will be interesting to see how he performs in a hitter's home park with a solid offense providing run support.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez has nice outing

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 11:01:25 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez (triceps) tossed four scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut Monday, March 21, with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: That's a very encouraging day for an aging pitcher coming off an injury-plagued year. Physical issues make him a bigger risk than ever before, but if he can limit fly balls he may be in line for a rebound with good health. Sanchez is still worth grabbing in the later rounds if you're feeling optimistic.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez tosses simulated game

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 15:29:41 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez (triceps) threw a three-inning, 45-pitch simulated game against minor league hitters Friday, March 18. He will make his spring training debut Monday, March 21, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Sanchez could still have time to build his arm strength up before the regular season starts.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez has never reached 200 innings in a season, and he is coming off consecutive seasons with a huge ERA jump. Simply put, the 10-year veteran is likely past his prime and carries ample injury risk. However, there is upside for a solid four-category return and all it will require is a late-round selection. Just don't reach for Sanchez expecting a 2013 stat line.
