Tigers | Detroit mixing up rotation

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 13:15:12 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris will start against the Seattle Mariners Thursday, June 23, SP Anibal Sanchez will start against the Cleveland Indians Saturday, June 25, and SP Mike Pelfrey will start against the Miami Marlins Tuesday, June 28.

Fantasy Tip: There is minimal fantasy value for all three hurlers, and none are anything more than potential streamers in seasonal leagues or low-priced fliers in daily contests. Norris has the most appeal in the long term, but his 3.84 ERA and 6.5 K/9 through 14 career starts hardly jumps off the page.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez demoted to the bullpen

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 13:20:00 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez has been removed from the starting rotation and will pitch out of the bullpen, manager Brad Ausmus announced Wednesday, June 1.

Fantasy Tip: It has been a swift fall for Sanchez, as he has seen his ERA rise in each of the past three seasons. In the majority of leagues, Sanchez should be replaced. There is a chance he could develop into a dominant bullpen arm, but outside of taking a wait-and-see approach in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, there is no fantasy value. Stay tuned for who is announced as Sanchez's replacement.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez's next start in jeopardy

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 10:27:35 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez may not make his next start after allowing six runs on eight hits (three home runs) in just three innings to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Tuesday, May 31. "I don't think he's real confident on the mound right now, so we're going to have to make an adjustment with Sanchy," manager Brad Ausmus said. "Something's gotta be done because we need better starts than that." Sanchez has given up 14 home runs this year, tied for most in the league, and he has a 6.67 ERA in 11 starts.

Fantasy Tip: Home run allowance has been a problem for Sanchez in the past, too. The bottom line here is that Sanchez can't be trusted in any fantasy leagues right now and should be left to the waiver wire in all but AL-only formats. Perhaps Shane Greene (finger) will take Sanchez's rotation spot when he comes off the DL.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez awful in May

Tue, 31 May 2016 23:20:05 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez surrendered six runs on eight hits, including three home runs, in just three innings on Tuesday, May 31. He finished the month with a 0-4 record, 7.09 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in six starts.

Fantasy Tip: Only a furious rally kept Sanchez from moving into a multi-way tie for the major-league lead in losses (seven). The veteran gave up at least four runs in every start this month and served up nine home runs as well. It's unclear how long the Tigers are willing to live with Sanchez's struggles, but you shouldn't any longer. At best those in AL-only leagues can stash him on the bench.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez struggles again Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 17:07:34 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez (3-6) allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, May 25, with one walk and five strikeouts. It marked the fifth consecutive start where he has given up at least four runs.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez should be avoided in all formats due to his recent struggles, although his ERA actually dropped from 6.23 to 6.04 because three of the runs he allowed Wednesday were unearned. He is slated to make his next start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Tuesday, May 31.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez solid in defeat

Wed, 04 May 2016 17:53:54 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez dropped to 3-3 after losing his latest start Wednesday, May 4, against the Cleveland Indians. He registered seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven.

Fantasy Tip: It won't go down officially as a quality start, but there's more good here than bad from the 32-year-old veteran. Tonight's outing actually marked a season-high in innings for Sanchez, and he also reached seven strikeouts in a game for the third time in six tries. His ERA may not look very desirable at the moment, but Sanchez is showing signs he can settle in comfortably.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez tweaks delivery again

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 14:58:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez tweaked his delivery for the second time this season in his outing Thursday, April 28, opposite the Oakland Athletics. He brought back the rotation that sees him turn his back on the batter.

Fantasy Tip: While he now has three wins on the year after defeating the A's, Sanchez is doing it in ugly fashion, as he currently holds a 6.08 ERA. And after yielding 10 baserunners, including a disastrous seven walks, on Thursday, Sanchez now has a 1.86 WHIP through his first five starts. He's a risky player to start in most leagues, and at this point, owners should only be deploying him if he has an advantageous matchup.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez fans nine Athletics

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:24:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez allowed two runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out nine batters through 5 2/3 innings during the Tigers' 7-3 win Thursday, April 28.

Fantasy Tip: The strikeouts are encouraging, but they're somewhat mitigated by the damage the free passes do to the WHIP column. Sanchez sits with a 6.08 ERA, a 1.86 WHIP and 26 strikeouts through 23 2/3 innings over his first five starts of the season. He is difficult to trust at this stage, but if the veteran can fine-tune his control, there is upside. In deep mixed leagues, Sanchez is worth a roster spot if you're selective with his starts.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez improves to 2-0

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 14:57:00 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez won his second start of the year in as many tries Tuesday, April 12, versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. He logged 5 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits, including one homer. The right-hander also walked three and struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: This is an encouraging start for the 11-year veteran, especially after how he produced one of the worst seasons of his career only last year. Sanchez has some potential in most mixed leagues, as he's contributing solid pitching right now and plays for a team that also hosts a juggernaut of an offense. Thus, he could be someone that winds up winning around 15 ballgames. Give him a look if he's out there.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez wins in first start

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 17:37:09 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez pitched five innings in his first start of 2016 on Wednesday, April 6, versus the Miami Marlins. He allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking three.

Fantasy Tip: A pretty good season debut for the 11-year veteran. While he's years removed from his prime, Sanchez still has something to offer fantasy owners, playing alongside one of the league's best offenses while also being capable of providing decent numbers. There's some appeal here in deeper leagues.
