Rangers | Yovani Gallardo shuts down Orioles

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 19:24:57 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo extended his scoreless innings streak to 29 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two over six innings against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, July 2.

Fantasy Tip: The scoreless streak is the longest in the majors this season, and Gallardo ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) has now allowed two runs or less in eight straight starts. Modest strikeout totals and poor run support limit his upside a bit, but as long as he is blanking opponents, he makes a solid No. 2 pitcher at FantasyScore.

Rangers | Yovani Gallardo extends streak

Sat, 27 Jun 2015 20:00:55 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 23 innings by pitching three-hit ball into the ninth against the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) is now 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in five June starts, and shutting down the potent Toronto offense may have been his best performance yet. Gallardo has been streaky in recent years, but he is offering great value for the price at FantasyScore while he is dealing.

Rangers | Yovani Gallardo denied win despite 10K night

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 00:01:50 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo picked up a no-decision Wednesday, June 10, as the Oakland Athletics came back for a 5-4 victory. Gallardo struck out 10 batters in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) still has a 3.45 ERA, and he is worth the money despite the 5-6 record he has posted in the first half. Chalk it up as a non-traditional outing for Gallardo, whose record was 3-2 when the Rangers scored three to five runs in a game.

Rangers | Yovani Gallardo pitching well of late

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 10:51:24 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts entering his outing against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, June 10. However, he is 0-3 with a 6.48 ERA in three career starts against the A's, including two last year. He's looking to win three straight decisions for the first time since winning three straight in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) makes for a sleeper pick on FantasyScore tonight as a risk/reward commodity. He's hot coming in and is facing one of the worst offenses in baseball this year in a pitching-friendly park. However, the A's do rank eighth in baseball with a .732 OPS against right-handed pitchers.

Rangers | Opening day handed to Yovani Gallardo

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:57:03 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo will start opening day Monday, April 6, against the Oakland Athletics.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) draws a new-look Oakland lineup in a favorable pitching environment. At his price, consider him a low-priced flier for FantasyScore contests, just remember he is no longer a strikeout force like in the early days of his career. In mixed seasonal leagues, Gallardo is likely best utilized as a streaming option in favorable matchups.

Rangers | Yovani Gallardo expected to start OD

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 14:21:36 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo is expected to start the opening day game against the Oakland Athletics.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo, who posted a 3.51 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with the Milwaukee Brewers in 32 starts (192 1/3 innings) in 2014, will essentially be the team's ace with Yu Darvish (elbow) facing Tommy John surgery. The move to hitter-friendly Texas and the AL isn't an appealing move for his fantasy value, especially when considering his K/9 took another dip last year to 6.8. Gallardo isn't an attractive fantasy piece in standard 12-team leagues.

Rangers | Yovani Gallardo talks maturation

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 14:43:47 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo still possesses the same velocity he did as a rookie in 2007, but his arsenal has evolved. He leaned on his slider 24.6% of the time last season but only 7.3% as a rookie, and he has added a sinking fastball to his repertoire which lead to fewer strikeouts and more ground balls. His ground-ball rate climbed to 52.4% last season and it was just 37.9% as a rookie. "The older you get, the more things you figure out on how to get hitters out," Gallardo said.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo's durability is perhaps his greatest asset to fantasy owners, but he also posted the lowest ERA (3.51) of his career in 2014, which was a somewhat-rebound season. Projecting forward, the increased ground-ball rate should play favorably at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, however, he is still just a late-round flier in mixed leagues with the move to the American League and a hitter-friendly ballpark.
