Chiefs | Alex Smith sacked a lot

Sat, 09 Jan 2016 11:45:06 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was sacked 45 times in the regular season -- tied for third most among quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt might be licking his chops today, but the Texans won't have Jadeveon Clowney on the other end putting pressure on Smith. Moreover, Smith ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) has played well individually over his playoff career, throwing nine touchdowns and zero interceptions over three games. Still, Houston's pass rush will be something to watch against the Chiefs today.

Chiefs | Alex Smith succeeds in playoffs

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 14:42:48 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has thrown for 291 yards per game and nine touchdowns and zero interceptions in three career playoff games.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately, Smith has also lost two of those three outings, but his numbers are positive. Smith and the Chiefs have a tough test in the Houston Texans, who were one of the top fantasy defenses against quarterbacks this season.

Chiefs | Alex Smith tosses two TDs in win

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 21:19:17 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 14 of his 24 pass attempts for 156 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 17 game against the Oakland Raiders. He also ran nine times for 61 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith led his team to 11 wins and a wild-card game date with the Houston Texans next Saturday. He will be a cheap FantasyScore option, and a good play as long as Jeremy Maclin does not have any setbacks with the hip injury he suffered Sunday.

Chiefs | Alex Smith throwing more TDs

Sat, 02 Jan 2016 19:52:32 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has eight touchdown passes over the last five games, and the Chiefs have run for just three touchdowns during the same stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) isn't going to throw for a ton of yards, but he has tossed multiple touchdowns in three of his last five games, including two against the Oakland defense he faces in Week 17. He could worth a look as a low-priced alternative at the quarterback spot at FantasyScore if you want to spend up at other positions.

Chiefs | New career high for Alex Smith

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 17:12:15 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 125 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran six times for 54 yards in a 17-13 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 16, giving him a career-best 3,330 passing yards this season.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has failed to pass for 200 yards in four straight games, and while he usually bolsters his numbers with his scrambling ability, his upside is limited compared to other quarterbacks at FantasyScore.

Chiefs | Alex Smith effective vs. BAL

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 14:58:29 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was 21 of 25 for 171 yards and one touchdown Sunday, Dec. 20, in a 34-14 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) wasn't flashy or overpowering, as the Kansas City defense did most of the damage, but you can't go wrong with throwing just four incomplete passes. Smith has been effective enough in leading Kansas City to an eight-game winning streak, and he should be a decent FantasyScore play.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has so-so afternoon

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 21:08:28 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 15 of his 23 pass attempts for 191 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 14 game against the San Diego Chargers. He also ran five times for 40 yards. His interception-free streak of 312 passes was snapped. It was the second-longest in NFL history behind New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (358).

Fantasy Tip: Smith has developed a nice rapport with Albert Wilson and Jeremy Maclin down the stretch, but he is still only worth using as an emergency QB1 or decent QB2 in fantasy formats which use two starting signal callers.

Chiefs | Alex Smith protecting the ball

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 17:00:33 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has not thrown an interception in 305 attempts, which leads the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: Smith's ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) streak also ranks third in league history behind Tom Brady (358) and Bernie Kosar (308). He isn't the most prolific fantasy quarterback, but there's always value in not turning the ball over. The bad news is that the San Diego Chargers, Smith's opponent this week, have been better than average against the pass this year. Use caution.

Chiefs | Alex Smith accounts for two TDs

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 14:52:06 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 19-for-30 for 255 yards and two touchdowns against the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Nov. 29. He also rushed for 35 yards on six carries during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been able to post solid numbers over the last several weeks and has gone eight games without an interception. He is also producing with his legs by rushing for at least 33 yards in the last four games. He will be facing the Oakland Raiders next week and could be a solid starting option.

Chiefs | Alex Smith quiet in victory

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 16:37:41 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 20 of his 25 pass attempts for 253 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 11 game against the San Diego Chargers, and he carried seven times for 33 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was efficient and careful, but he did not account for any touchdowns to help out fantasy owners in that department. He appeared to have a second-half touchdown strike to Travis Kelce, but it was overturned via review.

Chiefs | Alex Smith leads team to win

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 22:39:12 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 17 of his 31 pass attempts for 204 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 10 game against the Denver Broncos. He carried six times for 33 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is still best used as a QB2 in standard fantasy leagues, and he is only worth a look in FantasyScore when the matchup is tremendously favorable and his salary is low.

Chiefs | Alex Smith runs, passes to victory

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 15:43:13 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards and another score as the Chiefs won 45-10 over the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) was effective facing the Lions, but there are a lot of issues with the Lions team so you may have to take this performance with a grain of salt. He's still a decent option on FantasyScore, but he won't likely explode for a strong performance like a Drew Brees or Philip Rivers might.

Chiefs | Four Chiefs listed as probable

Fri, 30 Oct 2015 15:29:35 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (groin), WR Jeremy Maclin (concussion), QB Alex Smith (thumb) and RB Charcandrick West (pectoral) all practiced in full Friday, Oct. 30, and are all listed as probable for Week 8 against the Detroit Lions in London.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) becomes a sleeper candidate on FantasyScore, and Maclin ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) could be stacked with him against a Detroit secondary that likes to give up a lot of big plays to their opponents through the air. That also makes Kelce ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) a pretty safe tight end pick. West ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) should see plenty of touches again in this one, and he has flex worthiness on FantasyScore.

Chiefs | Four Chiefs practice in full

Thu, 29 Oct 2015 16:17:43 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (groin), WR Jeremy Maclin (concussion), QB Alex Smith (thumb) and RB Charcandrick West (pectoral) practiced in full Thursday, Oct. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Kelce ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is the safest Chiefs player on FantasyScore this weekend. Smith ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) and Maclin ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) are a worthy stack duo in daily games against a Detroit defense that is plenty vulnerable. West ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) is the primary back now for KC and has midrange flex worthiness.

Chiefs | Three KC starters have full practice

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 15:46:48 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (groin), QB Alex Smith (thumb) and RB Charcandrick West (pectoral) all put in full practices Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Kelce ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) has another good matchup and continues to be one of the safer tight end picks on FantasyScore. Smith ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) is a sleeper this weekend in London against a beatable secondary. West ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) has clearly separated himself as the lead back with Jamaal Charles out for the year, and he's not a bad flex option in PPR setups like FantasyScore.

Chiefs | Alex Smith effective in win

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 15:28:06 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith threw for 251 yards and a touchdown in his team's 23-13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday, Oct. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) took a while to warm up but he did a good job in this game. With the Detroit Lions coming up next week, Smith could have another solid outing

Chiefs | Alex Smith should be in uniform

Fri, 23 Oct 2015 14:00:01 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (thumb) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 23, and is listed as probable for the Week 7 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fantasy Tip: Smith's ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) injury should not affect his play during the game, so he should see his normal workload. Smith probably is not the best option for owners since he has thrown only six touchdowns in six games this season.

Chiefs | Alex Smith practices in full

Thu, 22 Oct 2015 15:37:07 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (thumb) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) is on track to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7. He has thrown for at least 282 yards in three of his last four games but has only six touchdown passes on the season. Smith could be an option if owners on FantasyScore are looking to save money, but they should be able to find better options to use.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce, Alex Smith practice in full

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 16:04:38 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (face) and QB Alex Smith (thumb) both practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Fantasy Tip: With no more Jamaal Charles and with Jeremy Maclin (concussion) iffy for this weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) loses most of his sleeper allure. Kelce ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) will really be worth the price if Maclin sits out as Smith's safety blanket in the passing game.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has strong second half

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 21:19:15 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith and the team's offense did little in the first half of the Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers Monday, Sept. 28. However, he ended completing 24 of his 40 pass attempts for 290 yards, a touchdown and one interception while also running six times for 33 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) is a player worth watching in FantasyScore in the coming weeks, especially when the byes start to hit. The most important thing to come out of this game was the rapport he started to build with Jeremy Maclin ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) in the second half.

Chiefs | Rough night for Alex Smith

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 21:51:41 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith completed 16 of 25 passes for 191 yards and two interceptions in a 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos Thursday, Sept. 17.

Fantasy Tip: The turnovers for out of character for Smith ($6,300, 12.6% of cap), but even on one of his good days, you can probably find a better option in the same price range at FantasyScore.

Chiefs | Alex Smith holding onto ball

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 16:33:27 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has thrown 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions since Week 7 of the 2014 season, which is tied for the best touchdown to interception ratio during that span.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) has gone a good job of holding onto the ball but still has not thrown a touchdown to a wide receiver since 2013. Smith has some weapons to work with this season, but owners probably will be able to find better options to use most weeks.

Chiefs | Alex Smith has struggled vs. Denver

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 16:52:33 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has only thrown seven touchdowns in five career games against the Denver Broncos. Smith also has a 1-4 record against the Broncos in those games.

Fantasy Tip: History shows that you should keep Smith ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) out of your starting lineups this week. He played very well last week, and he does play better at home, but the Broncos have had his number.

Chiefs | Alex Smith carves up Titans

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 20:56:37 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 16 of 18 passing for 171 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-10 win over the Tennessee Titans in the preseason Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has some solid weapons to work with this year, and while he isn't an every-week starter, he is a solid fantasy backup.

Chiefs | Alex Smith impressed with Jeremy Maclin

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 15:42:00 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin has impressed QB Alex Smith in practices this summer. "I feel like that's the ultimate tool. For coach (Andy) Reid, he just loves drawing up stuff and creating stuff, so Jeremy will be all over the field," Smith said. "He'll be inside, he'll be outside, deep, short, running the ball, throwing the ball. I mean Jeremy is a guy that can do so much." Head coach Andy Reid's schemes and offensive language remain largely the same from the time he and Maclin worked together with the Philadelphia Phillies, so Maclin doesn't need a ton of time to acclimate to his new offense.

Fantasy Tip: Kansas City's signing of Maclin drastically upgraded their receiving corps immediately. He's expected to be Smith's top target, and he could open up valuable running and receiving room for the rest of the team's offensive weapons. Consider Maclin a WR2 in 2015.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin stretching the field

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 17:17:59 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin caught a long pass from QB Alex Smith on the second play of training camp Saturday, Aug. 1, and he caught a few more deep balls during the day. "We've got a new weapon," Smith said. "We've got to test it out a little bit. We've known for a while what we've got with him."

Fantasy Tip: Maclin gives the Kansas City offense a dimension it lacked last season, and while he is unlikely to deliver as many explosive plays as he did in Philadelphia, he is still the No. 1 target for the Chiefs and should make a solid WR2.

Tue, 14 Jul 2015 18:47:10 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith called the San Francisco 49ers offseason overhaul "crazy" Tuesday, July 14. "You knew some of that wasn't going to last forever," Smith said, per Cam Inman of The Mercury News. "We weren't going to be able to hold it all together from a cap standpoint and the years standpoint. You knew that was going to change," said Smith.

Chiefs | Alex Smith working with feet

Mon, 13 Jul 2015 12:16:01 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been focusing on footwork and technique this offseason, particularly with his downfield passes. "For me, footwork is something that never goes away," Smith said. "You're constantly trying to get better with your feet."

Fantasy Tip: Even if he betters his footwork and vertical game, there has not been a season yet where Smith has performed as a starting fantasy quarterback. The addition of Jeremy Maclin and the up-and-coming status of Travis Kelce are nice, but Smith is a backup fantasy quarterback.

Chiefs | Alex Smith to restructure?

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 20:37:37 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith's contract could be restructured to clear up to $8.175 million in cap space, according to former NFL agent Joel Corry. "Knock that base down to a million, and that's what you can get," Corry said. "(But) you raise his cap numbers in the future, which creates more dead money. That's been the one that I thought they might do for a long time."

Chiefs | Alex Smith being asked to go deep

Sun, 07 Jun 2015 19:37:53 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been asked to take more shots down the field this season. "I like where Alex is," offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said. "But now in the spring, we want to see any quarterback shoot the ball down the field and at least test it. That gives him the comfort level the next time he's in that situation."

Fantasy Tip: Whether or not Smith will be effective throwing the ball down the field remains to be seen, but with Jeremy Maclin in town to provide a deep threat, just taking an occasional shot should help free up Jamaal Charles a bit more.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin working with Alex Smith

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 12:15:05 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin and QB Alex Smith played catch for the first time since Maclin was acquired this offseason. Maclin said everything was smooth and that he was simply trying to get a feel for how Smith threw the football. Smith said he believes Maclin's transition into the Chiefs' offense will be relatively smooth since he has already played for head coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Tip: It's unrealistic to expect a duplication of last season from Maclin, when he tallied career highs in catches (85), yards (1,318) and touchdowns (10). Kansas City's offense isn't as high octane as the Eagles' offense and it's centered more on Jamaal Charles. Maclin could still post WR2 numbers when all is said and done. Alex Smith is somewhat underrated as a fantasy quarterback, but he's still not starter worthy even with Maclin in town.

Chiefs | Alex Smith medically cleared

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 15:31:58 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (spleen) was medically cleared for the start of offseason practice, Monday, April 20. The Chiefs don't begin full-squad practices until May, 26.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will likely receive a boost in fantasy value with the Chiefs' offseason addition of WR DeSean Jackson. Smith failed to connect with a wide receiver for a touchdown in 2014 and finished the season with 18 total passing touchdowns. Smith should only be considered as a second quarterback, in the late rounds of 2015 fantasy drafts.

Chiefs | Alex Smith could be restructured

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 11:37:50 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith's $10.9 million salary could be converted into a bonus to help the team create some salary cap space in 2015. That would create upwards of $8.2 million in salary cap room.

Chiefs | Marcus Mariota a fit in KC?

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 14:53:46 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota would be a perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid, even if the team is committed to QB Alex Smith, in the opinion of NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. Kiper cites the success of former QB Donovan McNabb as Reid's quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Mariota is expected to be gone when KC picks at 18 overall, and the Chiefs are unlikely to trade up to take him. Reid said he didn't have a chance to meet with Mariota, either.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota will be nothing more than a weak QB2 in traditional fantasy leagues in 2015, and that's if he winds up with a starting gig. Mariota may be better off used at FantasyScore if he starts at any point next year, with the right matchup, of course.

Chiefs | Alex Smith needs receivers?

Wed, 28 Jan 2015 13:50:01 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith needs more weapons around him, according to impending free-agent LB Justin Houston. He believes the Chiefs can win a championship with Smith. "For the past two years we had winning seasons. This year, I feel like our offensive line struggled a little bit, we had some injuries that caused him to get sacked more than usual. But I think we can do it," Houston noted Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs were the first team since 1950 to go an entire season without a wide receiver having a touchdown reception. TE Travis Kelce was the focal point of the passing attack late in the season and should be a midrange starting tight end in fantasy drafts in 2015.

Chiefs | Alex Smith unattractive to WRs?

Mon, 05 Jan 2015 16:04:25 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has earned a reputation for throwing the shorter routes, which means receivers often don't pile up big statistics when they play with him. That could have an effect on free-agent wideouts deciding to sign with the Chiefs over other teams.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a secret that Smith's fantasy value is limited because of his preference for check-down routes and his lack of a strong arm. Any receiver that is taking passes from him next season should be downgraded a bit as a result.

Chiefs | Alex Smith won't need surgery

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 14:32:59 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (spleen) will heal on his own and isn't expected to need surgery for a lacerated spleen. Trainer Rick Burkholder said Smith's recovery time should be around six weeks. Smith could return if the team advances deep into the playoffs. "From a long-term standpoint and from a health standpoint from Alex, he's going to be fine. That's going to heal up," Burkholder said. Smith wasn't diagnosed with a lacerated spleen until midway through this week after he put in a few practices.

Fantasy Tip: Chase Daniel is set to start against the San Diego Chargers in Week 17 in a very important game for both teams. We would not suggest risking a selection of Daniel for your FantasyScore lineups because of his lack of experience and limited practice time this week.

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 09:12:58 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (spleen) will not play in the team's Week 17 game after suffering a lacerated spleen.

Chiefs | Alex Smith not throwing long passes

Fri, 14 Nov 2014 16:03:47 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith's average pass has only traveled 5.6 yards past the line of scrimmage this season, which is the shortest distance among quarterbacks in the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has not had to throw a lot this season since the team has a terrific running game, but he has been able to post solid numbers. Smith only costs $3,900 on FantasyScore but may not be a great option since he will be facing the Seattle Seahawks.

Chiefs | Probable status for Alex Smith

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 13:51:08 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) practiced in full for the third straight day Friday, Oct. 31, and is probable for Week 9 against the New York Jets.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($4,000; 8.0% of cap) faces one of the weaker secondary units in the league this weekend in the Jets. Smith remains a finer, low-cost option at quarterback, and it's hard to go wrong with him this week at FantasyScore.

Chiefs | Alex Smith a full go in practice

Thu, 30 Oct 2014 14:26:18 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Smith's injury is nothing serious, so expect him to start against the New York Jets. At a FantasyScore price of just $4,000 (8.0% of cap), Smith is a very attractive, low-priced QB option against a weak Jets secondary.
