Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has earned a reputation for throwing the shorter routes, which means receivers often don't pile up big statistics when they play with him. That could have an effect on free-agent wideouts deciding to sign with the Chiefs over other teams.
Fantasy Tip: It's not a secret that Smith's fantasy value is limited because of his preference for check-down routes and his lack of a strong arm. Any receiver that is taking passes from him next season should be downgraded a bit as a result.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (spleen) will heal on his own and isn't expected to need surgery for a lacerated spleen. Trainer Rick Burkholder said Smith's recovery time should be around six weeks. Smith could return if the team advances deep into the playoffs. "From a long-term standpoint and from a health standpoint from Alex, he's going to be fine. That's going to heal up," Burkholder said. Smith wasn't diagnosed with a lacerated spleen until midway through this week after he put in a few practices.
Fantasy Tip: Chase Daniel is set to start against the San Diego Chargers in Week 17 in a very important game for both teams. We would not suggest risking a selection of Daniel for your FantasyScore lineups because of his lack of experience and limited practice time this week.
Fri, 26 Dec 2014 09:12:58 -0800
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (spleen) will not play in the team's Week 17 game after suffering a lacerated spleen.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith's average pass has only traveled 5.6 yards past the line of scrimmage this season, which is the shortest distance among quarterbacks in the NFL.
Fantasy Tip: Smith has not had to throw a lot this season since the team has a terrific running game, but he has been able to post solid numbers. Smith only costs $3,900 on FantasyScore but may not be a great option since he will be facing the Seattle Seahawks.
Fri, 31 Oct 2014 13:51:08 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) practiced in full for the third straight day Friday, Oct. 31, and is probable for Week 9 against the New York Jets.
Fantasy Tip: Smith ($4,000; 8.0% of cap) faces one of the weaker secondary units in the league this weekend in the Jets. Smith remains a finer, low-cost option at quarterback, and it's hard to go wrong with him this week at FantasyScore.
Thu, 30 Oct 2014 14:26:18 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 30.
Fantasy Tip: Smith's injury is nothing serious, so expect him to start against the New York Jets. At a FantasyScore price of just $4,000 (8.0% of cap), Smith is a very attractive, low-priced QB option against a weak Jets secondary.
Wed, 29 Oct 2014 15:19:45 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Wed, 29 Oct 2014 10:47:26 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) is expected to be a full participant in practice Wednesday, Oct. 29, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Mon, 27 Oct 2014 11:39:14 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) is expected to play in Week 9 even with a sprained throwing shoulder.
Fantasy Tip: The New York Jets have been porous against the pass this year, so Smith could be a nice start. However, there is the risk that the Chiefs will look to run more with Smith ailing.
Mon, 27 Oct 2014 10:32:03 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (shoulder) suffered a shoulder injury in the team's Week 8 game.
Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to watch his practice participation this week to see if there is a chance he will miss Week 9. Chase Daniel likely would start if Smith is not able to play and likely would not be a starting option.
Wed, 08 Oct 2014 19:13:11 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith lost a touchdown pass after an official stat change from Week 5. Originally, he was credited with a touchdown pass to RB De'Anthony Thomas, but that has been changed to a touchdown run, as the pass was deemed a lateral.
Fantasy Tip: Anyone who started Smith will likely feel the pinch when fantasy providers make a stat adjustment, and this could potentially change a result of two across fantasy leagues.

You've got to play good, otherwise you move on, so I don't care how many years you've got on a contract, for me it's just to be expected."

The 49ers can deal that pick for its second-round value before Tuesday's trade deadline, if so desired.

"Alex was very positive about it."

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 13:50:13 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been a success early this preseason, and he's shown to be a leader in training camp in head coach Andy Reid's system. "He's a smart guy," Reid said of his quarterback. "He gets it. He makes it easy. He doesn't run out of gigabytes."
Fantasy Tip: Smith won't be asked to carry the team. He isn't that type of quarterback. However, if he limits his mistakes and makes smart decisions, he could be a big surprise. The upside is limited, though, and he won't put up the numbers to make him anything more than a weak QB2, most likely.
Sat, 10 Aug 2013 16:12:36 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he attempted to acquire QB Alex Smith several times when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and Smith was with the San Francisco 49ers.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson gave QB Alex Smith high praise, calling him the best quarterback in the NFL. "Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback," Pederson said. "I think we have the best in the league."
"There are a lot of great ones," Pederson said, "but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He's a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he's experienced, he's a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him."
Fri, 26 Jul 2013 19:36:51 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith connected with WR Dexter McCluster on a deep pass down the middle that was hauled in for a touchdown Friday, July 26, on the first play at training camp. More importantly than the big plays, head coach Andy Reid likes consistency, and Smith went several plays into practice before throwing his first incompletion. "There weren't a lot of balls on the ground, and it looked like the defense had people covered," Reid said.
Fantasy Tip: Smith is considered a Top 25 fantasy quarterback right now, and he should be treated as a low-end QB2 until he proves otherwise. His average draft position (ADP) has been around the 180th overall pick.
Wed, 24 Jul 2013 17:09:48 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Ricky Stanzi is the only quarterback on the team's roster not acquired by new head coach Andy Reid and new general manager John Dorsey, and he finds himself fighting for a roster spot. QB Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter, and QB Chase Daniel is the top backup. That leaves Stanzi and QB Tyler Bray fighting for the No. 3 job. "We're splitting reps. I'm just really worried about the reps I got. It's been nice to be out here a couple of days early just to refresh with the playbook and kind of get up to speed with the guys, especially with the receivers."
Wed, 17 Jul 2013 09:53:04 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said new head coach Andy Reid has been "very hands-on" regarding the quarterbacks and the offense, which incorporates some of the same terminology that Smith used under the direction of San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman for the past two seasons. He seems happy to have a new beginning. "To see them make the move and trade and get me, and it's what I wanted to happen -- very exciting. Now, it's my turn to go make the most of it."
Fantasy Tip: The story also points out that being sort of the unquestioned starter entering camp is something new for Smith, who says, basically, that it's nice to feel wanted. Given the weapons at his disposal and the productivity that Reid's system can generate, Smith may very well be a decent backup fantasy QB in 2013.
Fri, 28 Jun 2013 09:49:38 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles labeled QB Alex Smith as a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback. "I think he is. He's got a great arm," Charles said. "He's been winning most all of his career. I think he wants to prove people wrong: That he is a good quarterback, that he can stay consistent."
Fantasy Tip: Charles may be going overboard, but he's understandably trying to give his new quarterback some confidence. He may be on to something, though, as the Chiefs will let Smith stretch the field more often than he was allowed to with his old team. Smith has plenty of offensive weapons and home run hitters surrounding him to surprise as a strong QB2 under Andy Reid's system.
Thu, 06 Jun 2013 10:28:04 -0700
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid isn't afraid to have QB Alex Smith throw the ball downfield often, something he wasn't accustomed to doing during his time as a starter for the San Francisco 49ers. Reid is challenging Smith to be more aggressive without being careless with the football and causing turnovers. "It's a new offense. I would tell any quarterback that comes in new that that's what you need to do. I've told them all that. Go ahead and take your shots and see what you can get away with, within reason. But if it's a close throw, there are going to be a few of those in the National Football League on game day so you need to know what you can get away with on each route," Reid said.
Fantasy Tip: Reid is known for preferring his offenses to stretch the field in the passing game, and although Smith hasn't had much experience with that, he's being groomed to be more of a gambler down the field. We don't expect Smith to become Drew Brees overnight, and Smith's completion percentage will likely suffer, as well as his lack of turnovers, but it might make him a bit more interesting from the fantasy side of things. Right now, continue to consider him a somewhat uninspiring backup choice with the potential to rise.
