Texans | Smith not happy with DL production

Tue, 21 Aug 2007 11:14:25 -0700

Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith is not happy with the lack of production from the team's defensive line on passing downs this preseason, especially in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18, against the Arizona Cardinals. "I'm happy we won the game, but once again, I'm not totally excited about the way we performed. There wasn't enough pressure on the quarterback. We have to go back and look at it, and evaluate it. The run defense I'm pleased with. I'm not pleased in terms of our pass defense. And it comes from a combination of things: pressure on the quarterback and doing a good job of our coverage," Smith said. In the game against the Cardinals, the starters on the defensive line totaled only one tackle and one pass defensed.

Texans | Team converting to 4-3 defense

Wed, 15 Feb 2006 18:06:53 -0800

Nick Schenck, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith is planning to convert the team's defense to a 4-3 alignment. Smith said, "We feel it's going to fit our personnel extremely well here. Also, we have the ability to be able to run some 3-4, which we will install. We think that's an advantage because this football team has been running the 3-4 for quite a long time here. Because of that, we feel it's harder for an offense to prepare for us. So right now we're building our library."
