Nationals | Night off to clear head for Ian Desmond

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 15:59:22 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond received the night off to clear his head, according to manager Matt Williams. "I see it in Desi's face when he comes back to the dugout and it hasn't gone well," Williams said. "There is a grind there and there's no fix… except support, rest if you can, work. Sometimes you just gotta give them a day and today's that day for Des."

Fantasy Tip: It has been a miserable campaign for Desmond ($4,200, 8.4% of cap). He has been showing signs of late, though, with 10 runs, four home runs, 10 RBI and a .278/.339/.537 slash line over his past 15 games. Seasonal owners could take a buy-low stab at Desmond, but he certainly carries plenty of risk.

Nationals | Ian Desmond not in lineup

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 12:47:14 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 5. 2B Danny Espinosa is starting at the 6 and hitting sixth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) does have eight of his 10 home runs against right-handed pitchers but is hitting .242 (55-for-227) against them. De La Rosa has his ups and downs but can be dominant at times. Consider Espinosa a very mediocre FantasyScore option, and he'll mainly help you save salary cap space elsewhere.

Nationals | Ian Desmond homers again

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 20:02:50 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and a walk in a 9-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, July 25, and he has homered in three straight games.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is suddenly on fire after struggling all year. He is riding a six-game hitting streak, and he has four homers, seven RBI and eight runs scored during the stretch. Take full advantage of his hot bat at FantasyScore.

Nationals | Ian Desmond heating up

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 20:34:20 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond went 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, two runs scored and a walk in a 7-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday, July 24, and he has three home runs in his last five games.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has been a big disappointment this year, but he is riding a modest five-game hitting streak and his power seems to be coming around. He offers nice upside for the price at FantasyScore when he is swinging a hot bat.

Nationals | Ian Desmond snaps out of funk

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 20:45:00 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs Monday, July 20, against the New York Mets to snap out of his skid. He cited words of encouragement from Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. for his good game.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond entered the game 3-for-40 (.116) with no extra-base hits and just one RBI to go along with 14 strikeouts in the month of July. It will take another game or two like this to trust him in FantasyScore. When he does start to show signs of recovery, he could be a steal at just $3,500 (or 7.0% of cap) due to his power potential.

Nationals | GM confident Ian Desmond will rebound

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 13:03:22 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond has a .211/.255/.334 slash line with just seven home runs and 24 RBI this season, however, general manager Mike Rizzo is confident Desmond can turn his season around. "I expect him to be Ian Desmond (in the second half). He's our shortstop, he's gonna be our shortstop," Rizzo explained. "He's a leader of the ballclub. He's a three-time Silver Slugger that we think he's going to be Ian Desmond in the second half. He's got a great attitude, a great work ethic."

Fantasy Tip: Desmond ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has a history of being a superior second-half hitter with a career .285/.337/.432 slash line after the All-Star break. Seasonal owners looking for a potential game-changing move could take a speculative stab at acquiring Desmond, but expectations should be kept in check. FantasyScore players should view him as a potential value target in favorable matchups.

Nationals | Ian Desmond making adjustments

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 14:34:47 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond is receiving the night off because he is working on mechanical adjustments to his swing and needs to build muscle memory, according to manager Matt Williams. Williams noted Desmond is working to bat with his hands higher.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has a career-low .219/.263/.347 slash line this season, and he has only two stolen bases. It wouldn't be out of the question to replace him in shallow leagues, or at least, he should be benched in the majority of formats. If there aren't upgrades available, hopefully Desmond's adjustments work out, and he can salvage his season. Don't count on it, though.

Nationals | Ian Desmond sitting vs. Braves

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 13:49:59 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond is not in the starting lineup Thursday, July 2. 2B Dan Uggla is playing second base and batting sixth, and 2B Danny Espinosa is batting second and filling in at shortstop against Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is reeling through an extremely disappointing season, and he cannot be started with confidence in daily contests. His year-long value is dwindling, too. Espinosa ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) continues to be a high-risk, high-reward FantasyScore play, but there is upside hitting second. Uggla ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has a .696 OPS through 94 plate appearances this season, so he is nothing more than a low-priced flier for daily games Thursday.

Nationals | Ian Desmond dropped to seventh

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 08:16:04 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond has been dropped back down to seventh in the order for Game 1 of the doubleheader Sunday, June 28, against the Philadelphia Phillies and RHP Kevin Correia.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) continues to struggle at the plate, and he should be avoided against most right-handed pitchers. Against Correia, Desmond can be used in GPP tournaments.

Nationals | Ian Desmond coming around?

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 20:14:33 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in a 7-0 win over the Atlanta Braves Thursday, June 25, and manager Matt Williams said he was encouraged by the performance. "The (homer) the other way and the ball through the middle are really good signs," Williams said. "It means he's staying on it, seeing it good. Hope that'll get him hot and get him rolling."

Fantasy Tip: Despite Williams' optimism, Desmond ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is still hitting just .224 on the year. You can afford to wait until he strings together a few more big games before using him at FantasyScore.
