Cubs | Jose Veras will not close for now

Sat, 12 Apr 2014 09:37:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said RP Jose Veras will be taken out of the closer role for now.

Fantasy Tip: The team has not named a replacement at this point, but Pedro Strop and James Russell are the most likely options to receive save opportunities. Strop probably would get the first chance to close a game. Owners looking for saves can consider adding one of these relievers, but there is a chance Veras regains the job at some point.

Cubs | Jose Veras trending in wrong direction

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 06:08:09 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jose Veras' stuff was trending downward as spring training progressed, and he has been rocked early on this season. Manager Rick Renteria said he's not worried about Veras.

Fantasy Tip: The odds are that Pedro Strop steals the job eventually. Save speculators can pick him up in mixed leagues, but he needs to be owned in NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Pedro Strop closes the door

Fri, 04 Apr 2014 06:02:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop pitched a perfect ninth to record the save Thursday, April 3.

Fantasy Tip: We reported yesterday that he may be gaining on closer Jose Veras. He has pitched three scoreless frames and can be added in mixed leagues for save speculators.

Cubs | Jose Veras, Wesley Wright not available

Thu, 03 Apr 2014 14:25:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said both RPs Jose Veras and Wesley Wright were unavailable to pitch Thursday, April 3, because both relievers pitched in the team's 16-inning contest the night before.

Fantasy Tip: Veras blew the save against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday night and was pretty bad all spring, leading many to believe that the Cubs already preferred to use Pedro Strop in the ninth. That could be the case, eventually, or a committee approach could be used. Stay tuned. Strop is worth a stash in deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Jose Veras' spring struggles continue

Thu, 03 Apr 2014 08:42:12 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jose Veras blew his first save chance of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, April 2.

Fantasy Tip: Veras' skills are slightly above average for a reliever. He struggled all spring, and this isn't a good start to the year. If things continue to go south quickly, the Cubbies may go elsewhere. Other candidates to close include Pedro Strop and James Russell and Wesley Wright.

Cubs | Jose Veras having spring to forget

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 15:22:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jose Veras gave up two more runs and three hits while walking one in an inning Monday, March 24, and he's allowed a run in half of his eight outings this spring. Manager Rick Renteria isn't worried, however, and the Cubs have yet to get Veras some late-inning work in a game this spring. Veras pitched the top of the fifth inning Monday.

Fantasy Tip: It's a very small sample size and it is spring training, so take it with a grain of salt. However, it doesn't exactly sell you on drafting Veras late in mixed league drafts.

Cubs | Jose Veras to close

Tue, 17 Dec 2013 15:52:14 -0800

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman is suggesting that RP Jose Veras will close for the team next season. He agreed on a one-year, $4 million deal Tuesday, Dec. 17, with $3.85 million base salary plus a $150,000 buyout on his $5.5 million option for the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: A lot can change between now and opening day. But for now, put Veras higher in your closer rankings than Pedro Strop. Veras sacrificed some dominance for control as the closer for the Houston Astros last year. The move to the National League should be nice, but he won't have as long a leash as he did in Houston if his control problems resurface.

Cubs | Jose Veras agrees

Tue, 17 Dec 2013 15:13:47 -0800

The Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year, $4 million deal with free-agent RP Jose Veras (Tigers) Tuesday, Dec. 17. He has a $5.5 million option for the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: Veras will likely compete with Pedro Strop for the closer role in spring training. Until we know who has the upper hand, both should be late-round speculation additions to your relief corps.
