Padres | Josh Johnson feels good after 'pen

Sat, 16 May 2015 11:07:44 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (elbow, triceps) felt fine a day after his 32-pitch bullpen session Friday, May 15, and he hadn't been on a mound since an April 28 simulated game in which he felt tightness in his triceps. Johnson said he felt "real good" after his session Friday, but the team is taking extra caution after he's coming back from his second Tommy John procedure. Johnson is hoping to throw a few more side sessions, another simulated game and then go on a minor league rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson could be a rotation candidate for the Padres when he's ready to return to MLB action, and he can be a useful source of strikeouts when he's healthy, especially when pitching at Petco Park. Stash him now in deep mixed and NL-only leagues to get ahead of the game.

Padres | Josh Johnson resumes throwing

Tue, 12 May 2015 16:34:06 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (triceps) has resumed throwing after having soreness after a simulated game May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson has a ways to go before he'll be considered for a rotation spot in San Diego. Even when he's healthy, though, there may not be room for him in the starting five. If fully healthy, he could find success at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, so he's worth stashing in NL-only leagues if you have the room.

Padres | Josh Johnson to play catch soon

Tue, 05 May 2015 20:17:22 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (triceps) said Tuesday, May 5, that he had some triceps tightness after his simulated game a week ago. He said the pain is now gone, and he will play catch later this week.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain when Johnson will be able to return to the big club, but FantasyScore players will have another solid pitching option to use when Johnson finally is able to return.

Padres | Josh Johnson moving closer

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 16:23:49 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (elbow) had another successful bullpen session Monday, April 13, in which he threw all of his pitches. He will pitch in minor league games next month.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson could be a rotation option for the Padres in a couple months, depending on how Ian Kennedy (hamstring) comes back from his injury. He's a stash option right now for NL-only owners. Keep him on your radar in deep mixed leagues and monitor his progress.

Padres | Odrisamer Despaigne likely to enter rotation

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 10:29:15 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Odrisamer Despaigne is expected to replace SP Ian Kennedy (hamstring) in the starting rotation. SP Josh Johnson (elbow) could be an option for the rotation in around six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Despaigne's ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) fantasy baseball value increases a good deal now that Kennedy is hurt. He's relevant now in deep mixed leagues now that he has a rotation spot in the short term, and he'll be an attractive FantasyScore option in the right matchups.

Padres | Josh Johnson placed on DL

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 16:15:19 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, April 5.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson hasn't made more than 16 starts since 2012 with the Miami Marlins and missed the entire 2014 season due to injury. If Johnson is ever able to put the injuries behind him he could become a viable fantasy option, as he'll play his home games in one of the league's most pitcher-friendly ballparks. Johnson will need to prove he still has something to offer before owners reinvest.

Padres | Josh Johnson tosses bullpen session

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:12:47 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (elbow) threw 20 fastballs at 50% during a bullpen session Monday, March 23. It was his first bullpen session since he underwent Tommy John surgery last April.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson hardly tips the fantasy scales at this point and is best viewed as a potential stash candidate in deep NL-only leagues. At 31, he is a far removed from the upside he flashed from 2009-2012, too. He remains a player to watch, though, and could have some impact later this season, especially in FantasyScore contests.

Padres | Josh Johnson making great progress

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 10:37:37 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (elbow) is currently playing long toss three times a week from 180 feet, and he'll move back to 200-plus feet next week. Johnson is excited about the prospect of throwing a bullpen session soon as he returns from Tommy John surgery last April. His rehab program is going very well after not starting his throwing program until October.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson probably won't be able to pitch for the Friars until May or June. Starting pitchers often have some transition time when returning from TJS, too, so Johnson may not be back in peak for until much later this year or even next year. That means he shouldn't be on your radar in any mixed leagues, but he could be a stash option in cavernous NL-only formats.

Padres | SD deal with Josh Johnson slightly delayed

Tue, 23 Dec 2014 00:35:29 -0800

The one-year deal between the San Diego Padres and SP Josh Johnson is not official yet. An agreement is not in place and Johnson has not taken a physical. It could be a few more days before the contract is finalized, and it would pay Johnson $1 million in base salary with $7.25 million in incentives.
