Mariners | James Paxton to DL, Lucas Luetge recalled

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 16:14:15 -0700

The Seattle Mariners placed SP James Paxton (lat) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, April 9, and recalled RP Lucas Luetge from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Attention AL-only manager: Chris R. Young is the likely candidate to take Paxton's spot in the rotation, starting this weekend. Paxton's injury wasn't deemed too serious, but lat issues can pose problems and setbacks for pitchers.

Mariners | Chris Young expected to open in rotation

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 15:38:51 -0700

Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said it's a "reasonable assumption" that SP Chris R. Young will enter the season as the No. 5 starter for the team. "Our guys saw him in Florida," Zduriencik said. "They liked what they saw. They thought he was back from his injury. He's healthy -- as good as you can expect for a guy who has been through what he's been through." Young said he's completely healthy after having surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome last year. SPs Roenis Elias and James Paxton are expected to take the other two rotation spots that were up for grabs.

Fantasy Tip: Young is simpley a short-term rotation filler until Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) and Taijuan Walker (shoulder) can return, possibly in mid-April. Young has minimal value in AL-only leagues until then.

Mariners | Chris Young added

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 10:28:34 -0700

The Seattle Mariners signed free-agent SP Chris R. Young (Nationals) on an undisclosed one-year major league deal Thursday, March 27. Young had a 3.48 ERA in four outings with the Washington Nationals this spring before being released earlier this week. The Mariners are expecting Young to compete for one of the final rotation spots. RP Bobby LaFromboise was designated for assignment to make room for Young on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: The chances probably aren't good that Young wins one of the last rotation spots to open the year. He provides quality depth until Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) and Taijuan Walker (shoulder) are healthy.
