Royals | Chris Young moved to bullpen

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 16:03:45 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young has been moved to the bullpen. SPs Dillon Gee or Brian Flynn will "probably" start in his place Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: This move should surprise no one, as despite a solid first season with the Royals last year, Young has just been awful in 2016. Not only does he own a putrid 6.90 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, but the veteran had also surrendered a whopping 26 homers -- in just 60 total innings! Meanwhile, Gee and Flynn are not worth rushing to acquire, as neither has a high ceiling.

Royals | Chris Young hammered north of border

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 20:20:15 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young allowed six earned runs, seven hits and no walks over 2 1/3 innings in a loss Tuesday, July 5, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He also struck out four batters, throwing just 34 of his 56 pitches for strikes. He has allowed a league-worst 26 homers, including long balls in 13 straight starts to tie a franchise record.

Fantasy Tip: Young slipped to 2-8 and his ERA mushroomed to 6.90 to go along with an abysmal 1.63 WHIP. It's uncertain if Young will remain in the rotation after the All-Star break or the team will try to go another way, but it is clear that he is only worth retaining in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues right now.

Royals | Chris Young to start Sunday

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 21:41:06 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young will start on Sunday, June 5, against the Cleveland Indians. Young, who made seven starts before hitting the disabled list with a forearm injury on May 12, will have a pitch count of around 75. He returned over the weekend and made two appearances out of the bullpen, pitching four scoreless innings.

Fantasy Tip: Young was 1-5 with a 5.76 ERA as a starter this year, but he did a nice job for the Royals last season (11-6, 3.06 ERA, 1.09 WHIP). Those in AL-only leagues might want to make Young a speculative ad to see if he can turn things around.

Royals | Chris Young will pitch from the bullpen

Fri, 27 May 2016 14:31:13 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young (forearm) is expected to be activated from the disabled list this weekend and will pitch out of the bullpen, manager Ned Yost said Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, it is likely best to take a wait-and-see approach with Young, especially since the Royals bullpen is already loaded with quality arms to handle high-leverage situations. Plus, Young has a 6.68 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP through 32 1/3 innings this season.

Royals | Chris Young close to returning

Thu, 26 May 2016 14:47:57 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young (forearm) looked fantastic during a simulated game and is close to being activated from the disabled list, manager Ned Yost said Thursday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: Prior to the injury, Young posted a 6.68 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP through 32 1/3 innings over seven starts. In the majority of leagues, it would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with the 37-year-old veteran.

Royals | Chris Young throwing

Wed, 18 May 2016 17:46:46 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young (forearm) is throwing from 60 feet but has yet to pitch off a mound.

Fantasy Tip: Young had a 6.68 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings, so he's not guaranteed a spot in the starting rotation when he's ready to return, which could be another couple weeks. The tall and lanky righty should only be a stash candidate in deep AL-only formats.

Royals | Kris Medlen has rotator cuff injury

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:07:17 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (shoulder) is dealing with right rotator cuff inflammation. His 15-day disabled list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 11. Manager Ned Yost said both Medlen and SP Chris R. Young (forearm) should be able to return when they're eligible to come off the DL. SPs Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy will serve as fill-in starters in the meantime. Gee will throw against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, May 14, and Duffy will go Sunday, May 15. Duffy will begin on a 50-pitch limit.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Medlen nor Young are guaranteed to return to a rotation spot when they're healthy after really struggling before their injuries. Gee and Duffy aren't long-term solutions and aren't attractive options for the spot starts despite juicy matchups against the Braves. Both Gee and Duffy are unlikely to pitch deep in their starts this weekend. Keep tabs on Kyle Zimmer and Miguel Almonte in the minors, as both young pitchers could become options for the rotation at some point this year.

Royals | Chris Young, Kris Medlen to DL

Thu, 12 May 2016 11:43:27 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Chris R. Young (forearm) and Kris Medlen (forearm) were both placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, May 12. Ps Scott Alexander and Peter Moylan are being recalled in corresponding moves.

Fantasy Tip: Both Young and Medlen had really been struggling before their injuries, so they're not worth holding onto outside of AL-only leagues. Alexander and Moylan are relievers, so they don't figure to enter the starting rotation in KC. The more realistic options to enter the rotation are either Danny Duffy or Dillon Gee. One or both could have fleeting short-term value in single-universe leagues. Stay tuned.

Royals | Chris Young has injury to forearm

Tue, 10 May 2016 16:25:10 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young (forearm) is flying back to Kansas City to receive an MRI on his forearm Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: After allowing five home runs and five earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings to the Yanks last night, Young's ERA now stands at 6.68 on the young season in seven starts. His velocity was down Monday night, and he's allowed seven long balls in his last two starts. It seems likely he'll need to miss at least one start depending on his test results. Avoid Young for now in all mixed leagues.

Royals | Two spots in KC rotation up for grabs

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 08:10:39 -0800

Kansas City Royals SPs Kris Medlen, Chris R. Young, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee are expected to compete for the final two spots in the starting rotation during spring training, according to manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland.

Fantasy Tip: Yost hinted that SPs Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez would likely be the first three starters in the rotation, although he is hesitant to name an Opening Day starter. Owners in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues should keep tabs on this competition throughout spring training and the winners are worthy of consideration as late-round fliers in this year's fantasy drafts.
