Blue Jays | Russell Martin warming up

Sat, 28 May 2016 13:38:56 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin played an instrumental role in a 10-9 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, May 28, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run and three runs scored. Martin homered in the sixth, sparked a four-run eighth to tie it up at 8-8 with an RBI single and delivered a game-tying, run-scoring double in the ninth before crossing the plate on 2B Devon Travis' walk-off infield single moments later.

Fantasy Tip: Martin, whose batting average hasn't exceeded .200 at any point this season, broke out of a season-long power slump with two blasts on Wednesday and has four extra-base hits over his last four games after producing only one extra-base hit over his first 122 at-bats. Martin's track record was too good for owners to bail on him, so for those patient enough to ride it out, they may be getting their reward now. Despite his woeful start, he's still a good bet to be a top-10 backstop at season's end.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin goes deep twice

Wed, 25 May 2016 21:39:54 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin hit a pair of home runs against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, May 25. They were Martin's first two home runs of the season after he hit 23 with the Jays in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Martin inexplicably entered play on Wednesday with one extra-base hit in 122 at-bats before finding the cheap seats twice. Maybe this will get Martin going, as the veteran has long been a consistent source of power at the position -- 17.6 HRs, 63.4 RBI over his previous five campaigns. Keep an eye on him.

Blue Jays | No Russell Martin Tuesday

Tue, 24 May 2016 12:59:03 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24. C Josh Thole is behind the plate and is hitting ninth against New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi.

Fantasy Tip: Thole has become the knuckleballer R.A. Dickey's personal catcher, so don't be alarmed that Martin is out today. Neither catcher has done much with the bat this year, though, so consider Thole one to avoid in all daily formats. He's batting .158 with six hits (one home run) in 38 at-bats.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin not in lineup

Wed, 18 May 2016 12:53:12 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin is not in the starting lineup with SP R.A. Dickey on the mound Wednesday, May 18. C Josh Thole is doing the catching and is batting ninth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi.

Fantasy Tip: Thole has become the personal catcher for Dickey, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. Thole has just six hits in his 35 at-bats (.171) and should be avoided everywhere.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin taking a seat

Fri, 13 May 2016 14:35:52 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 13. C Josh Thole is doing the catching and batting ninth against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez.

Fantasy Tip: Thole has become the personal catcher for Dickey, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. The veteran Martin struggled through a nagging neck injury last month and likely led to his poor start. With Martin stuck in neutral, he's more of a second backstop in two-catcher and AL-only leagues right now. Thole offers little to no fantasy upside for daily gamers.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin, Ryan Goins return Sunday

Sun, 08 May 2016 08:04:13 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin and 2B Ryan Goins are back in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Ross Stripling Sunday, May 8, batting eighth and ninth, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Martin's overall statistics look horrendous, although he is batting .313 (5-for-16) with two RBI over the past week, so he's worth considering as an inexpensive flier for daily fantasy leagues. Goins is batting .149 through 87 at-bats and should be avoided in all formats.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin, Ryan Goins out

Sat, 07 May 2016 07:21:05 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin and 2B Ryan Goins are not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw Saturday, May 7. 2B Darwin Barney will start at second base and is batting eighth, while C Josh Thole will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Barney has gone 5-for-11 in five games this month but does not have an RBI in his last seven games. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use. Thole has struggled at the plate this season and could be avoided in most leagues.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin's neck an issue

Tue, 03 May 2016 08:15:04 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin (neck) is affected at the plate by his neck ailment, according to manager John Gibbons. Martin has struck out 31 times in 64 at-bats, which is double his strikeout rate from last season.

Fantasy Tip: Martin should be avoided in DFS. If you have the luxury, bench him in traditional formats until things start going better. He might require a cortisone injection and have to rest a couple of days.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin not playing

Mon, 02 May 2016 13:25:56 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin is not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin Monday, May 2. C Josh Thole will start at catcher and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Thole usually is in the starting lineup when R.A. Dickey is pitching. He is hitting only .185 so far this season and should be avoided by owners.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin catching Sunday

Sun, 01 May 2016 07:44:14 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin (neck) is back in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Sunday, May 1, batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Martin is batting .150 with four RBI and has struck out in 31 of 60 at-bats this season, so he should be avoided in all fantasy formats. Furthermore, he is hitless in 15 at-bats out of the No. 8 spot in the batting order this year. Look elsewhere for catching options this afternoon.
