The length of absence for Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (knee) is unknown. He had fluid drained from his knee Monday, April 21, and he also had an MRI, but the results were not made known. "You can get a knee drained and have to get it drained again in two months," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I know people who have had their knee drained a couple of times and had surgery in the winter. It depends on the guy. We'll just have to wait and see."

SP Jeff Locke is not a candidate, as he pitched for Triple-A Indianapolis Monday, April 21. Ps Brandon Cumpton, Jeanmar Gomez and Stolmy Pimentel are believed to be the top candidates.

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed SP Wandy Rodriguez (knee) on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation Monday, April 21, and recalled RP Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Fantasy Tip: The Bucs could decide to call up Jeff Locke or Brandon Cumpton to replace Rodriguez in the starting rotation. It's unclear how serious Rodriguez's knee injury is, but it doesn't sound very serious. Locke or Cumpton would be short-term options for NL-only leagues. Stolmy Pimentel is an intriguing option, too, but is probably a secondary candidate.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday, April 15, that he is keeping an eye on SP Wandy Rodriguez, who has seen a dip in his velocity from his 2013 level and career average. His fastball is averaging 87.5 mph, down from 89.4 mph last season, and 89.3 mph for his career. "I don't run to answer right away just because I've seen three outings, and his velocity is down a tick. I think as we get more reps, as we get warmer weather, I think you'll get a more accurate read," Hurdle said.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) threw for roughly 10 minutes from 70 feet during the team's minicamp Tuesday, Jan. 7, and he's been soft tossing since December. "He looked like the Wandy of old — at 70 feet and in a small sample size," pitching coach Ray Searage said. "Hopefully, it warms up (Wednesday) so we can get a better assessment." Rodriguez thinks he'll be back to his normal routine by the start of spring training Feb. 13. Searage thinks Rodriguez will be in the starting rotation if he's healthy.
