Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo taking first-team reps

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 13:57:24 -0700

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo took some first-team reps at training camp Saturday, Aug. 1. QB Tom Brady worked with the starters during every period of practice, but Garoppolo took a "few snaps," according to James Palmer of NFL Media.

Fantasy Tip: Garoppolo had time with all the top-tier receivers, including some goal-line work. With Brady's status for the first four weeks of the season up in the air, Garoppolo could very well be a FantasyScore option to begin the season.

Patriots | Tom Brady resolution close?

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 11:25:45 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's suspension resolution case could be finalized before the start of the 2015 regular season. Documents show the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed this would be in the best interest of both parties. However, any ruling would be subject to appeal.

Patriots | Tom Brady works with starters

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 11:12:23 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady received all of the repetitions with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, July 30, and completed 27 of his 30 passes during team drills.

Fantasy Tip: Brady is currently suspended for the first four games of the regular season, but he is looking to have the suspension eliminated. Brady should be a starting quarterback in fantasy leagues this season, but owners will want a strong backup in case Brady does have to miss the first four games.

Patriots | Tom Brady's case moved to New York

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 07:08:01 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's lawsuit was transferred to Manhattan, N.Y., by a Minnesota judge Friday, July 30.

Fantasy Tip: The Minnesota judge had a history of siding with the players, but that maneuver appears to have been foiled. Brady is a midrange QB1 if he receives an injunction that delays his suspension and a low-end QB1 if it stands.

Patriots | Tom Brady files suit against NFL

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 06:48:14 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has filed a lawsuit against the NFL asking a Minnesota federal court for penalties against Brady to be vacated. The suit alleges that Brady's punishment was not fair and consistent. It also claims that the appeal hearing "defied any concept of fundamental fairness" and that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was partial in his decision to uphold the suspension.

Fantasy Tip: Brady can seek an injunction that will delay his suspension and allow him to play while the case is ongoing. In this best-case scenario, Brady is atop the midrange QB1 options.

Patriots | Tom Brady defends broken phone

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 06:19:23 -0700

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady posted on Facebook that he replaced his broken phone with a new one after his attorneys told the NFL "my actual phone device" would not be investigated. His representatives turned over requested cell phone records and emails, Brady said, and tried to obtain text messages from his old phone.

Fantasy Tip: Brady could draw this out in court and not miss a game this season. If that occurs, he'd fall right under the elite tier of fantasy quarterbacks. However, missing our games keeps him out until Week 6 and makes him a weak No. 1.

Patriots | Tom Brady offers lesser penalty

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 22:42:52 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could have had his suspended reduced based on a series of conditions. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL was willing to drop the suspension by "at least 50 percent" if Brady admitted to having knowledge of what the team's staff was doing to footballs, he admitted to failing to cooperate with the Ted Wells investigation and he apologized.

Fantasy Tip: Brady could have had his suspension reduced two or three games, but it appears this case will be headed before a federal judge.

Patriots | NE still wins without Tom Brady

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 14:07:49 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is facing a four-game suspension, but the Patriots have done fairly well without him. In games Brady has missed since he became a starter in 2001, New England has gone 10-5. They have averaged about two fewer points per game and about 27 fewer passing yards per game. However, their rushing yards have increased from 115.7 yards per game to 143.5 yards per game. Their total yards per game have actually increased as well from 366.8 yards per game to 367.3 yards per game.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to imagine the Patriots posting 367.3 total yards per game with Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm. The Patriots will be without Brady and starting RB LeGarrette Blount for Week 1, so they could struggle right off the bat. If Brady can produce at his usual rate upon his return, he could still turn into a low-end QB1, but he should be regarded as a QB2 with the suspension being upheld.

Patriots | Tom Brady taking appeal to court

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 13:43:54 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has given permission to the NFL Players Association to appeal his case in federal court, according to a source. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell upheld Brady's four-game suspension for his involvement in deflating footballs in last year's postseason.

Fantasy Tip: What looked like the end could be a new beginning, as this case could take a while to reach a new or similar verdict in court. The bottom line is that Brady is currently facing a four-game suspension and his fantasy value is taking a good hit with it. He should now be viewed as a QB2.

Patriots | Tom Brady's suspension upheld

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 11:43:44 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's four-game suspension has been upheld by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell Tuesday, July 28.

Fantasy Tip: This case could very well be heading to court now, as La Canfora indicated. If Brady does end up serving his four-game suspension this season, he could find himself in QB2 territory at season's end. Jimmy Garoppolo has shown some success in the NFL, but he's obviously no Tom Brady. Those who draft Brady, which shouldn't be until the middle rounds if he's out four games, might want to take Garoppolo in a later round.
