Rangers | Geovany Soto to split time

Wed, 06 Aug 2014 12:05:36 -0700

Texas Rangers C Geovany Soto (groin), who will be activated from the disabled list Friday, Aug. 8, is set to split playing time with C Robinson Chirinos when he returns. Chirinos hit his 10th and 11th home runs Tuesday, Aug. 5, and leads American League catchers by throwing out 40 percent of attempt base stealers. Soto will be the primary catcher for SP Yu Darvish, and Soto could have a slight edge in playing time over Chirinos.

Fantasy Tip: It's unfortunate for those Chirinos owners out there in AL-only and two-catcher leagues. He's still worth owning in those formats, but his PT will be cut considerably. Soto should be owned in similar leagues.

Rangers | Geovany Soto to return this weekend

Wed, 16 Jul 2014 14:31:24 -0700

Texas Rangers C Geovany Soto (knee) will be activated this weekend to take the roster spot of RP Jason Frasor, who was traded to the Kansas City Royals.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is expected to split time at catcher with Robinson Chirinos for the remainder of the second half of the season. Soto would be a nice addition in two-catcher or AL-only leagues if you need some at-bats from your catcher spot.

Rangers | Several options for backup 1B

Fri, 23 May 2014 16:27:37 -0700

The Texas Rangers could consider C Chris Gimenez, C Robinson Chirinos and 2B Donnie Murphy as options for their backup first baseman job. Gimenez has played 22 career games at first base, Chirinos has played five games and Murphy has never played the position in a game. 1B Brett Nicholas and 2B Adam Rosales have been playing first base at Triple-A Round Rock.

Rangers | Pitchers thriving with Robinson Chirinos

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 14:07:51 -0700

Texas Rangers pitchers enter action Wednesday, April 23, carrying a 2.36 ERA in games started by C Robinson Chirinos.

Fantasy Tip: Chirinos had some prospect hype years ago and, if he can score more playing time over J.P. Arencibia, he could scrape a bit of offensive upside with Arlington as his home park.

Rangers | Robinson Chirinos set to start entire series

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 18:04:13 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington will use C Robinson Chirinos for all three games behind the plate this week against the Oakland Athletics, with C J.P. Arencibia starting none. Chirinos started Monday, April 21, is starting Tuesday, April 22, and is likely for Wednesday, April 23. Washington wants to pair Chirinos with SP Martin Perez, as the two are friends and former teammates in Venezuela. Perez is scheduled to start Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Chirinos is worth using as a No. 2 catcher in AL-only fantasy leagues and some deeper mixed formats, while Arencibia is only worth keeping rostered in the deepest of AL play.

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 13:32:58 -0700

Rangers | Start with three catchers

Sat, 29 Mar 2014 20:29:49 -0700

The Texas Rangers will begin the regular season with three catches, mainly because they have to keep C Chris Gimenez after claiming him so late off waivers. Gimenez has no options remaining. C J.P. Arencibia will be the team's opening day starter, with C Robinson Chirinos and Gimenez serving as backups.

Rangers | Not sold on J.P. Arencibia

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 15:44:27 -0700

The Texas Rangers aren't sold on using C J.P. Arencibia as their starting catcher now that C Geovany Soto (knee) will miss extended time. "I haven't seen a whole lot of Arencibia at his best," manager Ron Washington said. C Robinson Chirinos has outplayed Arencibia both offensively and defensively this spring, but Arencibia has more experience in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: If you're searching for a second catcher, you may want to stay away from the situation in Texas. Chirinos may wind up seeing more playing time. It's rather telling that the Rangers are still looking for options outside the organization.
