Tigers | Mike Pelfrey not getting it done

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 23:47:22 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Mike Pelfrey allowed five earned runs, nine hits and no walks over 6 2/3 innings with just one strikeout in a loss Tuesday, April 26, against the Oakland Athletics.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey slipped to 0-4 with a 4.64 ERA. The Tigers gave Pelfrey a lot of money and so far it has been a disaster.

Tigers | Mike Pelfrey struggles with walks

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 05:18:42 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Mike Pelfrey allowed one run on five hits in six innings against the Houston Astros Friday, April 15, to suffer his second loss of the season. He allowed a career-high six walks during the game while striking out three batters.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey pitched better than he did in his first start but still struggled with base runners. Pelfrey will be facing the Kansas City Royals in his next start, and owners may want to keep him on the bench for that game.

Tigers | Detroit trio to start regular season

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 23:06:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers SPs Justin Verlander, Mike Pelfrey and Jordan Zimmermann will start the first three games of the regular season, with SP Anibal Sanchez possibly working in the back end of the rotation to start.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander has had a strong spring and is the best bet of the Detroit pitchers for fantasy purposes, while Zimmermann can be a force in his first foray into the AL if he can stay healthy. Pelfrey is more of an AL-only fantasy option, although it will be interesting to see how he performs in a hitter's home park with a solid offense providing run support.

Tigers | Mike Pelfrey having good spring

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 11:22:13 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Mike Pelfrey has thrown five scoreless innings Thursday, March 17, against the St. Louis Cardinals and has allowed two earned runs in 20 2/3 spring innings.

Fantasy Tip: That's good for an 0.87 ERA. Pelfrey could be worth a last-round flyer in mixed leagues if he keeps this up.

Tigers | Mike Pelfrey shines in spring debut

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 20:07:36 -0800

Detroit Tigers SP Mike Pelfrey struck out a pair of batters in three hitless innings in his Grapefruit League spring debut Wednesday, March 2, against the New York Yankees. He agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey was a combined 11-27 with a 4.94 ERA in three seasons (64 starts) with the Minnesota Twins, and his awful win-loss record cannot be totally blamed on a lack of offensive support. He was a little better last season, shaving his WHIP down to 1.476, lowest in a full season since 2010. Working in a pitcher's park like Comerica will help him, and he will have the likes of Miguel Cabrera and company providing offensive support. Expect a rebound to double-digit wins and a solid ERA.

Tigers | Mike Pelfrey agrees with Tigers

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 09:44:09 -0800

Free-agent SP Mike Pelfrey (Twins) agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with the Detroit Tigers Friday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey gave up a .304 batting average last season with a 4.26 ERA in a cavernous home ballpark. His 4.70 K/9 doesn't give much fantasy punch either. He'll be an AL-only option near the end of drafts.

Tigers | Mike Pelfrey could land with Detroit

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 09:01:16 -0800

Free-agent SP Mike Pelfrey (Twins) is close to signing a deal with the Detroit Tigers, according to multiple reports. Pelfrey went 6-11 with a 4.26 ERA for the Minnesota Twins last year.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey figures to round out Detroit's rotation if he agrees to a deal with them. The tall right-hander hasn't had an ERA under 4.00 over a full season since 2010, and he doesn't generate a ton of swings and misses (4.7 K/9 in 2015). Detroit can be a dangerous park for pitchers, too, so Pelfrey shouldn't attract any attention for owners in shallow mixed leagues.

Twins | Yanks have been tough on Mike Pelfrey

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 14:52:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey is 2-3 with a 5.28 ERA in five career starts against the New York Yankees, who he faces Tuesday, Aug. 18. Pelfrey's ERA in three career starts at Yankee Stadium is 7.00.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) is definitely a pitcher to avoid on FantasyScore while starting in the Bronx against one of the higher scoring teams in all of baseball this season.

Twins | Mike Pelfrey turns it around

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 23:18:19 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey allowed one earned run, four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over seven innings in a win Wednesday, Aug. 12, against the Texas Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) entered 0-5 with a 6.22 ERA over his past 10 starts, so it will take more than one good start to get FantasyScore owners to trust him again.

Twins | Mike Pelfrey dominant at home

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 18:54:40 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey takes the ball Thursday, July 9, to start against the Detroit Tigers. He enters with a 3-1 record and 1.80 ERA in seven home starts while holding the opposition to a .235 batting average.

Fantasy Tip: Pelfrey ($5,600; or 11.2% of cap) has held his own against the Tigers, too, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two outings while striking out eight over 11 2/3 innings this season. Still, he faces off against David Price in what is a tough matchup, so Pelfrey is still not recommended in FantasyScore despite his strong home numbers.
