Kansas City Royals RP Luke Hochevar (elbow) will need to have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, and he'll miss all of the 2014 season. Subsequent tests showed that Hochevar's ulnar collateral ligament may be as much as 65 percent torn. He had suffered a 20 to 45 percent tear in his UCL in 2010 and avoided the surgery. Manager Ned Yost said the surgery is expected to take place in the next two weeks. General manager Dayton Moore said the team will likely fill the bullpen void from within.

Kansas City Royals SP Luke Hochevar (elbow) has been shut down after an MRI exam showed he had a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Manager Ned Yost said the best-case scenario would be that Hochevar returns by the end of May. Hochevar will rest for two to three weeks before starting his recovery program. He first felt something in his elbow during his outing Monday, March 3.
Fantasy Tip: This will open up a spot in the bullpen for the majority of the first half of the season. If Yordano Ventura doesn't lock up a spot in the rotation, it seems like a lock that he'll at least be on the roster in a relief capacity now.

Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore said SPs James Shields, Jason Vargas, Jeremy Guthrie and Bruce Chen are penciled into the rotation to start the year. Moore suggested that SP Yordano Ventura may have a leg up on the competition for the fifth and final rotation spot this spring. Moore also said they won't hesitate to use Ventura in the bullpen "if that's how it unfolds." "We think he's ready for the major leagues. Certainly spring training will help validate that opinion," Moore said, adding, "We expect him to be one of our 12 pitchers when we break camp unless something unforeseen happens." Ps Luke Hochevar, Wade Davis, Danny Duffy and Chris Dwyer are all a notch behind Ventura heading into spring training.

The Boston Red Sox have been scouting Kansas City Royals P Luke Hochevar, but have not engaged the Royals in trade talks, according to sources. The Royals, however, aren't ready to sell off important pieces such as SP Ervin Santana. "Our philosophy isn't going to change just because we're six games under (.500)," general manager Dayton Moore said. "We're not going to back off."
Fantasy Tip: If the BoSox were to land Hochevar, it's unclear how they'd use him, since they need both rotation and bullpen help at the moment. Hochevar would probably be more fantasy-relevant if he entered Boston's rotation.
