Tigers | Justin Upton continues to scuffle

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 21:37:28 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton was hitless in five at-bats with three strikeouts Wednesday, April 27, against the Oakland Athletics to drop his batting average to .195.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been a huge disappointment to this point, posting just one homer and four RBIs with a .221 on-base percentage. He has 35 strikeouts in 82 at-bats to crush fantasy owners even further in leagues which penalize the category.

Tigers | Detroit shakes up lineup

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 12:51:51 -0700

Detroit Tigers OFs J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton were flopped in the batting order against Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray Wednesday, April 27. Martinez is now hitting second in front of 1B Miguel Cabrera, while Upton is dropped to fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Both Upton (.208/.235/.299 with one HR) and Martinez (.278/.346/.403 with two HR) are undererforming in the early going, so Brad Ausmus is looking for a way to get Detroit's offense going. You're probably not sitting either hitter in traditional fantasy formats, but you shouldn't be spending up on either of them in daily contests, at least until they start to break out of their early funks.

Tigers | Justin Upton continues to scuffle

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 11:10:03 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton went 0-for-4 Tuesday, April 26, and has just one hit in the last seven games.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is batting just .208/.235/.299 with one home run and four RBI in 77 at-bats with his new team. He has been known to go on hot and cold stretches in his career, though, so things could easily turn around once the calendar flips to May. However, his cold start could get him booted down the batting order if it continues. Sit tight with Upton for now, and if his owner is antsy in your league, see if you can't swing a deal to buy low.

Tigers | No Justin Upton vs. Cleveland

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 07:21:53 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton is not in the starting lineup Sunday, April 24. INF/OF Mike Aviles is starting in left field and batting seventh against Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Upton where you can Sunday. His 30 strikeouts pace the American League, and the slugger has just one home run and three RBI through his first 16 games. Remember, Upton is notoriously streaky, so Expect the offense to come in bunches eventually. Carrasco has limited opponents to just two runs and eight hits through his past two starts, which makes Aviles a risky fantasy start in all formats Sunday.

Tigers | Justin Upton won't be moved in lineup

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 08:58:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton isn't in danger of being moved out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order, according to manager Brad Ausmus. "For what?" When asked about K's, Ausmus said: "He's got a pretty good track record over the course of 500 plate appearances, putting up pretty consistent numbers so I'm not going to, after two weeks of games, change the game plan...that's what, in this game, they call panicking."

Fantasy Tip: Upton is off to a slow start with just 14 hits in 62 at-bats (.226) with one home run, but Ausmus isn't panicking yet and you shouldn't either if you own Upton. In this potent Detroit lineup, Upton should pick things up eventually, and he's been known to be a streaky hitter at times.

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 14:30:27 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton launched his first home run of the season Tuesday, April 12, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been out to a fine start in his first year in Detroit, and hopefully this home run gets him on a power streak. He's in a very desirable situation right now, batting second in a very dangerous Tigers batting order, and owners should continue to plug him in with the utmost confidence.

Tigers | Two hits for Justin Upton in debut

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 22:11:37 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored in his team debut Tuesday, April 5, versus the Miami Marlins.

Fantasy Tip: A fine beginning to his career in Detroit, though owners may not be so pleased to learn he hit second in the batting order, which could minimize his RBI opportunities. Even so, Upton appears primed for a nice year and should continue to offer a live bat no matter where he hits.

Tigers | Justin Upton gets into a groove

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 14:06:40 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton put a halt to his spring struggles on Saturday, March 26, going 4-for-4 - including a pair of solo shots - and scoring three times in a win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Upton entered the day batting .189 with no home runs in 37 at-bats, so this has to be slightly comforting for his owners. The Tigers are planning on batting him second - right in front of Miguel Cabrera - this season, so the odds are strong he will be seeing a lot of strikes. Owners have a right to be concerned about his move from the NL to the AL, but his situation is such that he should still be considered a top-15 outfielder in fantasy this season.

Tigers | Justin Upton not concerned

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 09:12:06 -0800

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (ankle) doesn't seem very concerned with his left ankle injury and was walking fine after leaving the trainer's room Wednesday, March 9. Upton said his ankle rolled a little bit when it was stepped on, but he thinks he'll be fine. Upton will take Thursday, March 10, off and re-evaluate the injury Friday, March 11.

Fantasy Tip: This could be a big blow to Upton owners early in spring. Keep an eye on his progress this weekend. If the injury isn't anything serious, Upton carries elite power onto a new team with a much more potent offense than he had last year in San Diego. Upton is worth selecting in the early rounds as your second outfielder.

Tigers | Justin Upton removed from game

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 11:02:10 -0800

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (ankle) was removed from the spring game as a precaution Wednesday, March 9, after his left ankle was stepped on.

Fantasy Tip: Upton looks like he'll be OK, but keep an eye on his status for the rest of the week. He has serious power and is moving from San Diego and pitcher-friendly Petco Park to the Tigers and a much more potent offense. He'll maintain elite fantasy value and is worth selecting in the early rounds of drafts.
