Tigers | Justin Upton playing Friday

Fri, 27 May 2016 16:00:11 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (quadriceps) is back in the starting lineup and is hitting sixth against Oakland Athletics SP Sean Manaea Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has picked things up a bit from his dismal April, but he's still only hitting .225 (16-for-71) this month with no home runs and 28 strikeouts. We wouldn't blame you if you continue to bench him until he breaks out of this extended slump.

Tigers | Justin Upton out again

Wed, 25 May 2016 09:13:55 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (quadriceps) is out of the lineup Wednesday, May 25, with OF Steven Moya hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Moya has cooled after a strong start, and he's hitting .276 with two RBI this season. Aaron Nola has been great, but Moya is a sneaky low-end flyer in this potent offense.

Tigers | Justin Upton not starting Tuesday

Tue, 24 May 2016 13:43:43 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (quadriceps) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24, against the Philadelphia Phillies. OF Steven Moya is playing left field and will hit sixth against Phillies SP Jeremy Hellickson. Upton may also miss Wednesday, May 25, as well, but that is not confirmed yet.

Fantasy Tip: Upton may be back in the lineup later this week, but even so his numbers have been less than stellar this season. He has only 37 hits in 43 games and a .223 batting average, but 66 strikeouts in 166 at-bats have made Upton a bad fantasy risk at the plate. Moya has little fantasy value at this point.

Tigers | Justin Upton scratched Monday

Mon, 23 May 2016 15:15:30 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (quadriceps) was scratched from the starting lineup with right quadriceps tightness Monday, May 23.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has picked it up a bit to get his average over .200, but he's been a massive disappointment for fantasy owners so far with just two home runs and 10 RBI while striking out 66 times in 178 plate appearances. He should be able to bounce back eventually, so he's a prime buy-low candidate. Steven Moya is replacing Upton against Phillies starter Vince Velazquez. Moya doesn't have a homer yet but hasn't been overmatched at the plate. Consider him a sleeper pick in daily setups.

Tigers | Justin Upton out of lineup Sunday

Sun, 22 May 2016 09:38:15 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton, C James McCann and Jose Iglesias are not in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Chris Archer Sunday, May 22. OF Steven Moya will play left field and bat sixth, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia will start behind the plate and bat eighth and INF Andrew Romine will play shortstop and bat ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Saltalamacchia is batting just .163 over the last four weeks and Romine is just 1-for-16 at the plate this year, so both players should be avoided in all fantasy formats. Moya is 7-for-19 (.368) with three extra-base hits and is worth considering as a productive means of salary cap relief in DFS.

Tigers | Justin Upton on pace for dubious record

Thu, 19 May 2016 23:12:49 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton is on pace for 255 strikeouts, which would shatter the record of 223 set by Colorado Rockies 1B Mark Reynolds in 2009.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is hitting .225 with two homers and 10 RBI. He's going to have to turn it around soon or he could be pushed for playing time by Steven Moya. Upton isn't a good starting option outside of AL-only leagues right now.

Tigers | Victor Martinez scratched

Wed, 18 May 2016 09:00:00 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez was scratched Wednesday, May 18, with OF Steven Moya hitting sixth. Martinez needed extra rest. 3B Nick Castellanos and OF Justin Upton moved up one spot to cleanup and fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Moya is 6-for-15 (.400) and has some luster against Ricky Nolasco. Castellanos is a daily consideration. Upton is another story. He's hitting .213 this month and .218 on the year. He's a big risk in DFS without a lot of positive signs.

Tigers | Steven Moya starting first game

Thu, 12 May 2016 11:58:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Steven Moya is starting in left field and is batting seventh against Baltimore Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez in his season debut Thursday, May 12. OF Justin Upton shifts to center field, while OF Anthony Gose will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers could use a boost in their outfield with both Upton and Gose struggling. The 24-year-old hitting outfielder has nice power (20 minor league homers last year) but swings and misses often. He should see decent playing time while he's up, which could hurt Upton and Gose. Add Moya immediately in dynasty and AL-only leagues. If you have the room, he's worth a cheap flyer in cavernous mixed affairs.

Tigers | Justin Upton missing a lot

Tue, 10 May 2016 09:06:40 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton leads the majors with 50 strikeouts in 123 at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: He's hitting just .228 with two homers and nine RBI as well. With Nick Castellanos breaking out, it could bump Upton down from his fifth spot and hurt his RBI potential. Upton is a risky midrange option in DFS right now.

Tigers | Justin Upton continues to scuffle

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 21:37:28 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton was hitless in five at-bats with three strikeouts Wednesday, April 27, against the Oakland Athletics to drop his batting average to .195.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been a huge disappointment to this point, posting just one homer and four RBIs with a .221 on-base percentage. He has 35 strikeouts in 82 at-bats to crush fantasy owners even further in leagues which penalize the category.
