Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki continues to scuffle

Wed, 04 May 2016 19:46:44 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki was hitless in four at-bats Wednesday, May 4, against the Texas Rangers to drop his average to a dismal .160.

Fantasy Tip: Tulo has just one extra-base hit over the past 10 games, and his batting average hasn't been over the Mendoza line since he went 1-for-3 on opening day. Despite the struggles, you have to stick with him if you have gone this long with him. Don't compound matters by dropping him and having him re-gain his form on another fantasy owner's roster, and certainly don't trade him while his value is at its nadir.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki cracks his fifth homer

Sun, 01 May 2016 13:30:05 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Tulowitzki, who is still sporting a .172 average, left the yard for the first time since doing so twice on April 23. His .172/.291/.356 line isn't endearing him to his current fantasy owners, but despite his struggles since arriving in Toronto last summer, he is a decent buy-low candidate whose can be had for pennies on the dollar. Current owners need to sit tight and consider options like the red-hot Aledmys Diaz in Tulo's place until he shows further signs of life.

Blue Jays | Nagging injuries for several Jays

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 16:48:21 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson (leg), SS Troy Tulowitzki (hip) and OF Michael Saunders (hamstring) are all in the lineup despite minor nagging injuries Monday, April 25. Donaldson is resting a sore left leg as the designated hitter, and Saunders returns after a three-game absence with a sore hamstring. Donaldson is expected to play through his injury but might require more time as a DH.

Fantasy Tip: Donaldson is last year's AL MVP and should remain in starting lineups in all fantasy formats. Tulo is off to a troubling .179 (12-for-67) start with 20 strikeouts, and you may want to consider benching him in traditional setups until he shows signs of life. Avoid him for now in daily contests. Saunders remains an undervalued commodity in mixed leagues while hitting in such a potent lineup on a regular basis.

Blue Jays | Vintage Troy Tulowitzki shows up Saturday

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 13:02:54 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki returned to the lineup Saturday, April 23, after a day off and had a field day against the Oakland Athletics, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of solo shots for his first multi-homer since joining the Blue Jays in late July last season.

Fantasy Tip: It's been a rough go for Tulo, who is still only batting .188 for the season after today's effort. There have been reports the 31-year-old isn't happy in Toronto, which could help explain he's not making as much contact and is striking out at much higher rates than his career norms. In 59 games as a Blue Jay, Tulo is batting .225 with nine homers and 27 RBI. He's still a starting option in all leagues due to the lack of overall production at his position, but he should probably be considered a low-end option for now.

Blue Jays | Michael Saunders, Troy Tulowitzki out

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 14:06:32 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Michael Saunders and SS Troy Tulowitzki are not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. OF Ezequiel Carrera is leading off and in left field, while 2B Ryan Goins is playing shortstop and hitting eighth against Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray. Also, 2B Darwin Barney is at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Tulo's slow start (9-for-60, .150, with two homers) is very concerning given the fact that his numbers have been in decline since last year's trade to Toronto. Buying low on Tulo could be a big risk. Carrera, Goins and Barney are all light hitters and barely move the fantasy needle. If you're in the mood for a desperation flier in daily games, Carrera should be your pick.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki missing his pitches

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 13:09:06 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki is batting only .128 this year with a .222 on-base percentage and .478 OPS in 54 plate appearances heading into Monday, April 18. He's posted a slash line of .239/.317/.380 with an OPS of .697 since coming to the Blue Jays last year. Opposing pitchers aren't pitching Tulowitzki any differently than they have before, but he's not punishing mistake pitches up in the zone like he had been before.

Fantasy Tip: Hayhurst also suggests that Tulo isn't happy in Toronto after being dealt by Colorado last year. The bottom line, though, is that he's not making as much contact and is striking out at much higher rates than his career norms. Tulo has the talent to turn it around in a potent lineup, but he's not getting younger and also carries injury risk. Tread carefully if you're considering buying low.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki leaves the yard

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 16:21:02 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki went 1-for-3 and belted the first home run of the 2016 season - a two-run shot in the eighth inning - on Sunday, April 3, in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: Tulowitzki disappointed offensively after arriving from the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline last season, but the five-time All-Star is a candidate to post MVP numbers in Toronto's stacked offense if he can just stay healthy. Owners should ignore last year's poor finish and find a permanent spot for Tulo in their lineups for as long as he can remain off the disabled list.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki back in lineup

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 12:48:56 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki (hand) is in the starting lineup Friday, March 25.

Fantasy Tip: If you already selected Tulowitzki, you can breathe a sigh of relief. And those still drafting should view the veteran as a high-end shortstop worth targeting in the early middle rounds of mixed drafts. Health risks accompany Tulowitzki, as he has averaged just 98 games over the past four seasons.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki could return Friday

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 15:16:01 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki (hand) will take swings in the batting cage and "might play" in a spring game Friday, March 25, according to manager John Gibbons.

Fantasy Tip: Tulo dodged a bullet and is only dealing with bruised knuckles. He's an elite fantasy shortstop that will come off the board in the early rounds because of how thin his position is. There is plenty of injury risk, though, so make sure you have viable backups.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki day-to-day

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 11:07:52 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki (hand) is feeling better Thursday, March 24, and is day-to-day after being diagnosed with a bone bruise between the first and second knuckles of his hand. He is not in danger of missing the start of the regular season. Tulowitzki is hitting .281 with four home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.035 OPS in 32 at-bats this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Tulo dodged a bullet here. His fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief. Tulowitzki has been injury-prone in his career, though, and that's one of the biggest knocks against him. When healthy, though, he's an elite shortstop option in a weak pool, and he's worth a look in the early rounds.
