Pirates | McCutchen, Marte out for Pittsburgh

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 07:34:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen and OF Starling Marte (foot) are out of the lineup Thursday, June 23. OF Matt Joyce is hitting fifth, and OF Sean Rodriguez is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Joyce has two homers and nine RBI in 36 June at-bats. He's a low-end option against Albert Suarez. Rodriguez is hitting .196 this month, and he's an underwhelming option in DFS.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen ends drought

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 20:08:34 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen snapped a career-worst 0-for-18 drought, finishing 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in a 6-4 loss to the New York Mets Thursday, June 16.

Fantasy Tip: It has been a disappointing year for McCutchen, but his fantasy owners have no choice but to keep starting him and hope he turns things around.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen still dinged up

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 14:39:53 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen (thumb) believes his issues to date have been related to a "balky" thumb. At the same time, hitting second in the batting order has ended up working out for McCutchen, as he's received fewer at-bats with two outs and nobody on base.

Fantasy Tip: The former NL MVP is having a real tough time in June, being just 7-for-47 (.149) with only one extra-base hit in 12 games this month. Even so, McCutchen is too talented of a player to keep struggling, and he was able to overcome a slow start last year as well before putting up his usual splendid numbers. He should be fine despite his current thumb ailment.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen's grip too tight

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 11:05:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is hitting .241/.321/.408 with nine home runs and 68 strikeouts in 60 games, and his swing-and-miss (12.5%) and strikeout rates (24.8%) are both career highs. He hinted that his struggles might be related to how he's gripping the bat. "I've come to figure out I was gripping the bat a little too tight," McCutchen said. "When things aren't going the way you want them to go, sometimes you can get a little tense. Come to figure out, that's what was happening, that's why my thumb was catching the majority of the beating. I just need to relax my top (right) hand a little more, stay away from that jamming over and over again."

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is also chasing more pitches outside the zone, and his lack of stolen bases has also made him a fantasy disappointment to this point of the season. Remember, though, that he got off to a terrible start in 2015, too, only to rebound nicely. We're not convinced that McCutchen can't do it again this year, so it wouldn't hurt to try buying low on him now.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen not starting

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 09:10:23 -0700

OF Starling Marte will start in center field, while OF Gregory Polanco will start in left field. OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Marte and Polanco have been solid at the plate this season and should be starters in all leagues. Joyce has been a big factor for the team in his limited playing time and has gone 5-for-14 against left-handed pitchers. He should be a fine starting option in daily fantasy leagues.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen, Gregory Polanco back

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 15:36:15 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OFs Andrew McCutchen (thumb) and Gregory Polanco (foot) are both back in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver Friday, June 3. McCutchen is hitting in his usual No. 2 spot, while Polanco is third in the order.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen has started slow in the past and remains stuck in neutral, but he should remain a starter in all seasonal leagues. Get him back into your lineups. Polanco, meanwhile, is having a breakout season and is contributing across the board for fantasy owners. Both players are strong plays against the soft-tossing Weaver.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen striking out more

Sun, 29 May 2016 13:03:04 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is striking out 23.3% of the time this season, which is nearly six points higher than his career average. "I'm a guy that has a good feel for the zone, and when I get good pitches to hit, normally I hit them. But more times than not lately, I've been getting them and I've been missing them. I'm getting to two strikes more and having to battle. When I'm on and I'm feeling good, I get a pitch to hit, I hit it," McCutchen said.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen has a .289 batting average with four home runs and 12 RBI so far this season but has struck out 25 times in each of the first two months. McCutchen should still be a starting option in all fantasy leagues despite his struggles.

In addition, INF David Freese will bat fifth and play third base, while INF Sean Rodriguez will play shortstop and bat eighth. 3B Jung Ho Kang (hand) and SS Jordy Mercer are receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is 4-for-12 at the plate over the past week and is batting .349 at home this season, so he should be viewed as a potential value play at the hot corner in daily fantasy contests.
