Angels | Cliff Pennington starts activities

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 19:16:07 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) has started some low-level baseball activities as he makes his way back from a hamstring injury. "It's very low level. He's a ways away," manager Mike Scioscia said Monday, June 20.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, Pennington is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues for help in the middle infield.

Angels | Cliff Pennington hits the DL

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 21:35:48 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim placed INF Cliff Pennington (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, June 1, due to a left hamstring injury. SS Brendan Ryan was recalled from Class AAA Salt Lake to take his spot on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington's stay in the majors was brief, as he just returned Saturday from the DL. Neither he nor Ryan are worth rostering outside of the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues.

Angels | Cliff Pennington removed in seventh

Tue, 31 May 2016 23:11:31 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) was removed from the game in the seventh inning on Tuesday, May 31, after legging out an infield single. 2B Johnny Giavotella entered as a pinch runner. Pennington is expected to be placed on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington, who just came off the DL, appears to be headed back there with another hamstring injury. It's a tough break for Pennington, though even when healthy his fantasy profile is that of an AL-only candidate.

Angels | Carlos Perez, Gregorio Petit out

Sun, 29 May 2016 11:18:48 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez and SS Gregorio Petit are not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Doug Fister Sunday, May 29. SS Cliff Pennington will start at shortstop and is batting seventh, while C Jett Bandy will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Bandy is hitting .286 in limited playing time this season but is not a strong option in most leagues. Pennington is hitting only .217 in the first two months and probably can be avoided in most leagues.

Angels | Cliff Pennington rehab update

Thu, 26 May 2016 18:29:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) went 1-for-3 with a triple in his first rehab game for Class A Inland Empire Wednesday, May 25.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington is expected to be activated from the disabled list Saturday, May 28, and will likely see the bulk of the action at shortstop for the Halos until Andrelton Simmons (thumb) is ready to return. However, Pennington is not a great fantasy option and should be viewed as nothing more than middle infield depth for AL-only leagues.

Angels | Cliff Pennington to be activated Saturday

Sun, 22 May 2016 18:45:12 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington should see regular at-bats until Andrelton Simmons returns, but he is only an option for desperate owners in AL-only formats.

Angels | Cliff Pennington placed on disabled list

Fri, 13 May 2016 17:27:40 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have placed SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left hamstring. In a corresponding move, INF Gregorio Petit has been recalled from Class AAA Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington's tenure as the Angels' No. 1 shortstop was short-lived, after Andrelton Simmons (thumb) went down with a sprained left thumb that will have him sidelined for six to eight weeks. At this point, it is uncertain if Brendan Ryan will receive most of the action at short while Pennington is sidelined or if he will split time with Petit. However, neither player should be considered as anything more than middle infield depth in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Angels | Cliff Pennington hurt

Fri, 13 May 2016 05:31:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) left the game Thursday, May 12, in the fifth inning with a hamstring cramp. He is considered day-to-day for the team's series with the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington doesn't carry much in the way of fantasy value as it is, but this is noteworthy because Brendan Ryan may be the only healthy shortstop the Angels have right about now. This was only a cramp, so there is a chance Pennington won't miss too much time, but the Angels can ill afford too many more injuries.

Angels | Daniel Nava, Johnny Giavotella out

Sun, 08 May 2016 11:07:59 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Andriese Sunday, May 8. SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting seventh, while OF Ji-Man Choi will start in left field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington has gone 3-for-12 with zero RBI in five games this month and is not a great fantasy option in most leagues. Choi is hitting only .067 this season and should be avoided in all leagues.

Angels | Three Angels not in the lineup

Sun, 01 May 2016 11:13:13 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega, C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Sunday, May 1. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Shane Robinson will start in left field and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has at least one hit in six of his last seven starts and has six RBI during that span. Soto could be used in two-catcher leagues. Owners should avoid using Pennington and Robinson for the time being.
