Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury swinging Thursday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:42:28 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) will take swings during soft toss Thursday, March 26, and he thinks it'll be a good test to see if he can be ready for opening day. He hasn't played in a game since March 15 due to a right oblique strain that the team is calling "extremely mild." If Ellsbury can play in a game by March 31, he should be ready for opening day, according to manager Joe Girardi. Ellsbury has also been doing sprints, playing catch and swinging a broomstick.

Fantasy Tip: The Yanks are being extremely cautious with Ellsbury because of the nature of his injury. It remains to be seen if he'll be ready for opening day, but unless he suffers a setback, his draft value shouldn't change. You may want to be cautious in using Ellsbury ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) at FantasyScore right out of the gates, though.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury likely to be ready

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 11:42:03 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) is making progress and will likely be ready for opening day, according to manager Joe Girardi. "He did some light broomstick swings (Monday)," Girardi said of the center fielder, who is out with a strained right oblique injury. "He is progressing great. As long as he is in (a game) by next Tuesday, I feel that we are going to be OK."

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Ellsbury won't miss much time at all to start the season, but oblique injuries are tricky, so he's not out of the woods just yet. With that said, Ellsbury ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) might be a shaky FantasyScore commodity during the first week if he needs to be rested.

Yankees | No timetable for Jacoby Ellsbury

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 12:19:33 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) still does not have a timetable for resuming baseball activities, and if he has not begun them by Monday, March 30, the season opener would be in jeopardy, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Fantasy Tip: Ellsbury ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) continues to say the right things, and it is unlikely he misses any length of time, if any. However, in the short term, he could be a risky FantasyScore play in the first week of the season. Continue to check back for updates leading into opening day. Ellsbury remains a high-end outfield option in seasonal leagues due to his ability to help in every category, and he is an especially strong source of stolen bases.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury improving

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 11:22:43 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) thinks his strained right oblique is improving, and he's confident he'll be able to play on opening day. He hasn't played a spring game since March 15, and he said the next step will be to resume hitting and throwing. Ellsbury hit .271 with 16 home runs, 70 RBI and 39 steals in 149 games in 2014. He was hitting .222 (6-for-27) with a triple and an RBI in nine spring games this year.

Fantasy Tip: Ellsbury has been known to be a slow healer, so there are no assurances that he'll be ready to go on opening day. However, if he's in the lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays on opening day, he should be in consideration for a FantasyScore roster spot at $5,900 (11.8% of cap).

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury confident for opening day

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 16:25:23 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) said he is very confident he will be ready for opening day Thursday, March 19. Ellsbury noted he feels a lot better already and he will take a few days and see how he feels then.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Ellsbury to be reading for opening day, unless he suffers a setback. He profiles as a rare five-category contributor and is worth targeting in the early middle rounds, at the latest. This injury, along with his past health issues, may deflate his fantasy stock slightly making him a better bargain if he slips in drafts. Continue to check back for updates on his progress and return timeline.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury has MRI

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 15:54:49 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) underwent a precautionary MRI which revealed a low-grade mild oblique strain, and he will not participate in baseball activities for the next seven days.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have hindered Ellsbury off and on throughout his career, and at 31, this is a bad start for his fantasy value. While the injury appears minor, it is still concerning. It wouldn't be out of the question to bump Ellsbury down a tier in your rankings. Still, he is a rare five-category producer who hits in a friendly home environment and a potentially better lineup. The injury may also open additional profit potential if Ellsbury falls past the early rounds of drafts.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury has abdominal strain

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 13:35:16 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (abdomen) is dealing with a "mild strain" of the rectus abdominus muscle, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Fantasy Tip: The Yanks are saying it's a minor injury, but it's something to keep an eye on for the rest of spring training. Ellsbury, now 31, has struggled staying healthy in his career. Despite that, he's worth an early rounds selection in fantasy drafts for his combination of power and speed in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner atop order?

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 11:44:57 -0800

New York Yankees OFs Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner could both sit atop the lineup this season, according to manager Joe Girardi. Injuries forced the Yanks to use Ellsbury more in the No. 3 spot last year, where they weren't able to showcase his elite on-base abilities. Girardi also wants to continue to see both Ellsbury and Gardner run on the bases and put pressure on opposing pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: After a .271 season in which he hit 16 home runs and stole 39 bases in pinstripes, Ellsbury's floor is pretty high in the Bronx, even on the wrong side of 30. His price is justified with an early-rounds selection. Because Gardner doesn't have near the power that Ellsbury possesses, he's more of a middle-rounds selection as a speed asset.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury to bat leadoff

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 12:20:59 -0800

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury is expected to serve as the club's leadoff hitter in 2015, after spending much of the 2014 season batting third. "I felt comfortable batting third," he said. "Once the lineup spins through, it really doesn't matter. But coming up with runners in scoring position, I felt comfortable in those situations. If they hit me 3, or 1 or 2, Joe (Girardi) knows how I feel. I'll do anything."

Fantasy Tip: Due to Ellsbury's changing role in the Yankees' batting order, expect to see more stolen bases and fewer RBIs out of him in 2015. He is projected to be taken in the first three rounds of mixed league fantasy drafts.
