Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury hurt, leaves game

Fri, 06 May 2016 16:42:28 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (hip) left the game early after grabbing at his hip in the third inning against the Boston Red Sox Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Here we go again. Ellsbury has a history of lower body injuries and could be headed for a DL stint depending on the severity. Plan for the worst if you own him. With Alex Rodriguez already on the DL, both Aaron Hicks and Dustin Ackley could see regular playing time moving forward. Neither are hitting well and barely crack the surface for consideration in AL leagues. New York's best option may be to recall prospect Aaron Judge. Get ahead of the action and stash Judge in deep mixed and AL-only leagues now.

Yankees| Jacoby Ellsbury celebrates milestone

Wed, 04 May 2016 21:47:29 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury played in his 1,000th career game Wednesday, May 4, against the Baltimore Orioles, finishing 3-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run scored while also collecting two stolen bases.

Fantasy Tip: Ellsbury had a giant stat line, and he is 6-for-11 with three doubles and an RBI in three games during the month of May, raising his average from .235 to .271 since April 30.

Yankees | Aaron Hicks day-to-day

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 18:08:31 -0700

New York Yankees OF Aaron Hicks (shoulder) was removed from the game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth inning Friday, April 22, due to left shoulder soreness. He is listed as day-to-day. OF Jacoby Ellsbury replaced Hicks in center field.

Fantasy Tip: Hicks was hurt while diving and no tests are scheduled, so the injury is believed to be minor. He should only be considered for AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues because he has been seeing regular playing time whenever the Yankees face a southpaw, with either OF Brett Gardner or Ellsbury relegated to the bench.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner platooning?

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 16:10:47 -0700

New York Yankees OFs Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner, who both have hefty contracts, are essentially in a platoon with one of them sitting on a regular basis against left-handed pitchers to begin the year. The reason for this is the presence of OF Aaron Hicks, who has hit lefties well in his career. Hicks hit .307 against lefties in 2015 compared to .253 for Ellsbury and .276 for Gardner. However, Hicks has hit for 24 points less than Ellsbury and Gardner in his career against southpaws.

Fantasy Tip: Hicks not only has good numbers against lefties but has really impressed with his outfield defense so far. However, he's batting just .095 (2-for-21) and is a depth option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. If this setup continues, both Gardner and Ellsbury's fantasy value takes a big hit.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury not in lineup

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 12:22:49 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the lineup Friday, April 22, versus Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore. OF Aaron Hicks is starting in his place in center field.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a productive day against left-handed pitcher Rich Hill on Thursday, manager Joe Girardi is choosing to sit Ellsbury opposite the fellow southpaw Moore. Hicks is out to a disastrous 2-for-21 (.095) start, however, and shouldn't be trotted out with any fantasy lineups at this point in time.

Yankees | Brett Gardner scratched vs. Oakland

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 13:39:27 -0700

New York Yankees OF Brett Gardner (neck) has been scratched with a stiff neck against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, April 20. OF Jacoby Ellsbury is playing center field and leading off, and OF Aaron Hicks is playing left field and batting ninth against Athletics SP Kendall Graveman Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to remove Gardner from your lineups where you can. Ellsbury was orginally expected to sit Wednesday, so he could be a sneaky option in daily contests because he'll likely be scarcely owned. Hicks could continue to see semi-regular at-bats with three veteran outfielders ahead of him on the depth chart all having lengthy injury histories. Hicks is a potential grab in deep mixed formats.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury out again

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 12:34:25 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury remains out of the starting lineup again Wednesday, April 20. OF Aaron Hicks is starting in center field and batting leadoff against Oakland Athletics SP Kendall Graveman.

Fantasy Tip: It's certainly concerning that Ellsbury is off to a rough start to the year (10-for-47, .213). He was never the same after a knee injury last year, and his power and speed numbers are on the decline. The Yanks won't abandon him given how much they're paying him, but a rebound to Ellsbury's pre-Yankee levels isn't a guarantee anymore.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury out vs. lefty

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 12:39:18 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the lineup against Oakland Athletics left-handed SP Eric Surkamp Tuesday, April 19. OF Aaron Hicks is starting in center field and hitting seventh in the batting order. OF Brett Gardner is leading off, and 2B Starlin Castro moves up to the two-hole.

Fantasy Tip: Against Surkamp in New York, choosing several Yanks hitters for your daily lineups wouldn't be a bad strategy. Hicks is a low-end sleeper pick to save salary cap space, while Castro gains significant value moving to the top of the lineup.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury off to slow start

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 13:50:08 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury has four hits in 18 at-bats this year (.222) and is hitting just .265 with a .710 OPS in his two years with the Yankees so far.

Fantasy Tip: Have Ellsbury's lower-body injuries affected him that much? Last year after his knee injury his power and plate skills took a nosedive, and he didn't run as much, either. You have to be at least a little concerned. It's all about health for Ellsbury. He could rebound nicely in the average and stolen base departments, but don't have as much hope for his power stroke.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury goes deep

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 13:24:51 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-2 with a leadoff homer - his first home run of the spring - on Saturday, April 2, against the Miami Marlins.

Fantasy Tip: The solid effort cements Ellsbury's final spring-training batting average at .225. The 32-year-old missed some time during the exhibition season with a wrist issue and figures to be the everyday leadoff man against right-handers, although he could sit against southpaws in favor of Aaron Hicks. Ellsbury is a high-reward third outfielder in fantasy whose biggest enemy lately has been his durability.
