Brewers | Matt Garza logs second QS of 2016

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 21:31:00 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza yielded three runs on five hits over six innings of work against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, July 26. He walked a pair and struck out two.

Fantasy Tip: Garza had lost four in a row heading into Tuesday and was actually in line for just his second win of the season before the bullpen blew a one-run lead. Once a solid mid-rotation arm, Garza is just taking up space on the Brewers' roster due to his contract and has essentially no fantasy value regardless of league size.

Diamondbacks | Jake Lamb out of lineup

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 14:11:06 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Jake Lamb (hand) is out of the starting lineup Tuesday, July 26, against the Milwaukee Brewers. OF Brandon Drury will play third base and bat eighth against Brewers SP Matt Garza.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Chip Hale did say Lamb might get some time off to rest his bruised left hand, and it appears he's following up on it. Drury (.264-9-25) has five hits, including three doubles, in the past week and may be worth a low-cost flyer in DFS circles.

Brewers | Matt Garza has rough outing

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 16:49:08 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza allowed seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Washington Nationals Wednesday, July 6, to suffer his second loss of the season. He struck out two batters and walked two during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Garza has allowed 14 runs in his last two starts, which has raised his ERA to 5.54. He will have the All-Star break to rest but should not be a starting option in any fantasy league.

Brewers | Matt Garza struggles on mound, in field

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 22:16:12 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza gave up seven runs -- four earned -- on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, July 1. Garza's throwing error led to all three unearned runs in the fourth.

Fantasy Tip: After allowing one run in his first 10 innings of the season, Garza has now yielded 11 (eight earned) in his last 11 2/3. His ERA is still OK, but his WHIP sits at an unsightly 1.66. At this point, Garza is best deployed judiciously in NL-only setups.

Brewers | Matt Garza fires six scoreless

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 19:03:17 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza allowed five hits and struck out two over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, June 19.

Fantasy Tip: Garza has pitched well in his first two starts. His long-term value is questionable, but he could be worth a flier in NL-only leagues.

Brewers | Matt Garza inefficient in return

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 23:04:03 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza received a no-decision in his season debut Tuesday, June 14, against the San Francisco Giants. The veteran right-hander worked just four innings, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk, while also recording five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: It wasn't the prettiest of returns, as Garza needed 87 pitches to get through those four innings of work, but it could've been worse, considering the right-hander's decline in recent years for the Brewers. He was able to escape jams, as the Giants left 13 runners on base for the game. Garza isn't worth picking up just yet, but could have something to offer if he shows signs of his old self.

Brewers | Wily Peralta to minors

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 04:42:28 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Wily Peralta was optioned to Class AAA Colorado Springs on Sunday, June 12, to make room for SP Matt Garza (lat) on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: How the mighty have fallen, if that's a word you want to use with Peralta. He was the team's opening-game starter but has compiled a 6.68 earned run average this season. Needless to say, a change of scenery may do Peralta some good. Peralta's fantasy value has dropped significantly.

Brewers | Matt Garza to start Tuesday

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 16:33:32 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) will be activated from the disabled list in time to start against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Garza's numbers have been in a steady decline, and you can afford to leave him on waivers and take a wait-and-see approach.

Brewers | Matt Garza close to return

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 14:48:07 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) will make one final rehab start Thursday, June 9, and will then rejoin the Brewers' starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Garza has yet to pitch in 2016, but his velocity and effectiveness have been headed downward over the last few seasons. He had a 5.63 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 in 25 starts for Milwaukee last season. With limited strikeout upside and while pitching in a hitter's park, there's not much to like about Garza in mixed fantasy leagues these days.

Brewers | Matt Garza rehab update

Sat, 28 May 2016 11:52:28 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Class A Wisconsin Tuesday, May 31. If all goes well, he is hoping to return to the parent club's starting rotation June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Garza went 6-14 with a 5.63 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) for the Brewers in 2015 but is likely to step into a starting role once he is healthy enough to return, which speaks volumes about the rest of the team's rotation. If he performs well in his first few outings, the 32-year-old right-hander could be worthy of consideration for NL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.
