Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA. SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.
Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Chicago Cubs SP Clayton Richard is expected to be called up from Class AAA Iowa to become the team's fifth starting pitcher after he tossed seven scoreless innings and gave up three hits for Iowa Tuesday, July 28.
Fantasy Tip: Richard allowed five earned runs in his two starts (12 innings) for the Cubs this year, and his stay in the rotation could be very short if Chicago trades for another starting arm this week. Richard should only be added in deep NL-only leagues, and he'll be a weak play on FantasyScore.

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel (hamstring) left his start against the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, July 8, due to left hamstring tightness. He was replaced by P Clayton Richard in the second inning.
Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($8,800, 17.6% of cap) struck out one batter in one scoreless inning before leaving the game. Check back for more updates on his status.

The Chicago Cubs acquired SP Clayton Richard from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations Friday, July 3, and he will start against the Miami Marlins Saturday, July 4.
Fantasy Tip: Richard was 4-2 with a 2.09 ERA through nine starts at Class AAA Indianapolis. He pitched in the majors from 2008 to 2013, and he posted a respectable 3.88 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 520 innings over 84 starts between 2010 and 2012. Richard stands as a high-risk start in all formats Saturday, although, it isn't a terrifying matchup.
