Giants | Sergio Romo playing catch

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 14:38:13 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo (elbow) played catch from 60 feet Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants are being careful with Romo, a relief pitcher who throws a lot of sliders. With him out, Hunter Strickland's role as a setup main has grown, but Santiago Casilla remains the closer in San Fran and has been strong so far this year. Casilla can be shaky, though, and Strickland should be handcuffed or picked up if you're looking for saves. There's no timetable for when Romo will return.

Giants | Sergio Romo brought along slowly

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 16:50:43 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo (elbow) will resume playing catch Friday, April 29, but he will be brought along slowly.

Fantasy Tip: Romo was likely drafted in deeper leagues as a handcuff option to Santiago Casilla in the late innings for the Giants. Romo should be left to most waiver wires until he's ready to return. In the meantime and in the long term, Hunter Strickland has some intrigue as a possible candidate to see some save chances if Casilla struggles or is injured.

Giants | Sergio Romo not expected to need surgery

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 08:57:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo (elbow) isn't expected to need surgery for his "cranky" elbow, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Romo's slider-heavy approach leaves him vulnerable to elbow injuries like this one. Even if he avoids surgery, it looks like his DL stint will last longer than the alotted 15 days. This bumps Hunter Strickland's fantasy value up a tad, as he'll now serve as the main setup guy to closer Santiago Casilla.

Giants | Sergio Romo headed to disabled list

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 16:14:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo (elbow) was placed on the disabled list with a flexor muscle strain in his right arm Thursday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: Romo was serving in a set-up role to closer Santiago Casilla, so with Romo on the disabled list, Hunter Strickland projects to be next in line for save opportunities. Romo can be dropped in the majority of seasonal formats.

Giants | Sergio Romo timeline update

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 15:03:05 -0800

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo will face hitters Saturday, March 12, and then will be ready to make his spring debut, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Romo is likely behind both Santiago Casilla and Hunter Strickland in the saves race. Romo's fantasy value is tied to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues at this point, his uptick to 11.1 K/9 in 2015 is encouraging, though.

Giants | Two more sessions for Sergio Romo

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 22:01:46 -0800

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo is expected to throw two more bullpen sessions before being worked into a Cactus League spring game.

Fantasy Tip: The team is taking it slow with their closer, trying to preserve him for the regular season. They obviously know what they have in Romo and they're trying to avoid wear and tear before the games count for real. Fantasy owners certainly appreciate that.

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 23:54:26 -0800

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo is nearing his first Cactus League spring game.

Fantasy Tip: Romo is being held out as a precaution, as they know what he can do already and want to preserve him for the regular season.

Giants | Frisco bullpen not getting it done

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 18:10:41 -0700

San Francisco Giants RPs Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo have been struggling lately, particularly against left-handed hitters. Over the past 20 at-bats, lefties are hitting .328 against Casilla, and .450 off of Romo. RP Javier Lopez was used Monday, Aug. 3, against a lefty to start the ninth inning, but manager Bruce Bochy plans to stick with Romo setting up Casilla for now.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners in standard formats have been frustrated with the duo, but for now it appears to be status quo in San Francisco as Bochy lets each pitcher work through their problems rather than demote them to less stressful situations to iron out their issues.
