Mets | Jenrry Mejia pain-free

Wed, 05 Mar 2014 13:32:47 -0800

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) was pain-free in his spring debut Wednesday, March 5, giving up one unearned run and a hit while walking two and striking out three in two innings. "That's the most important thing -- I feel better, I feel good right now," Mejia said. "Everything is fine." Mejia is unlikely to win the fifth starting spot over SPs Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lannan, however.

Fantasy Tip: If he can remain healthy, Mejia should stick as an up-and-coming starter. It seems reasonable that he'll see time in the Mets' rotation this year, but they may choose to limit his innings in order to make him a rotation mainstay in 2015. He's a fine speculation target as an end-gamer in deep mixed and NL-only leagues.

Mets | Eyeing two for last rotation spot

Tue, 04 Mar 2014 04:12:05 -0800

New York Mets manager Terry Collins is considering SP Daisuke Matsuzaka and SP John Lannan for the fifth spot in the rotation. SP Jenrry Mejia, who was considered a rotation candidate, will likely be used in long relief during spring games to build arm strength.

Mets | More on Jon Niese

Wed, 26 Feb 2014 12:16:16 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Jon Niese's (shoulder) pain in his left shoulder is in a different part of his shoulder than what he experienced last year when he suffered a partially torn left rotator cuff. He first reported pain early in camp, and the team limited him to long toss. "He just said he's got a little discomfort in there," manager Terry Collins said, "so we're going to have a look."

Fantasy Tip: This can't be good news for Niese, who dealt with shoulder problems last season. Keep an eye on this one. If Niese won't be ready for opening day, John Lannan, Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero could sneak into the rotation. Syndergaard has the most upside of the bunch, with Montero not far behind.

Mets | John Lannan cleared

Wed, 12 Feb 2014 13:57:45 -0800

New York Mets SP John Lannan (hamstring) was cleared to throw off a mound Wednesday, Feb. 12, after having surgery to fix a "decent-sized tear" in the tendon that connects the quadriceps to the knee in his left leg last August. "I've been working without limits for the last month and a half," Lannan said. "It feels really good right now. I'm exactly where I need to be. I'm off a mound. I'm ready to compete." He'll compete with SPs Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jenrry Mejia, Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom for the fifth rotation spot this spring.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia wants to start

Mon, 10 Feb 2014 11:48:12 -0800

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) said he prefers to start, and he'll have the opportunity to compete for the fifth starter position in spring training this year with the likes of SPs Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lannan, Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom. "The only thing I know is that's going to be a competition -- because I'm here, my arm feels good," Mejia said. "I'll be ready to be there. Whatever they want me to do, that's what I have to do. But I want to be in the fifth spot. They've got to let me know." He's already thrown two bullpen sessions and will throw a third Wednesday, Feb. 12. Mejia isn't having any ill effects from the surgery he had in August to remove bone spurs from his elbow.

Mets | Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lannan can opt out

Thu, 30 Jan 2014 12:53:40 -0800

New York Mets SPs Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lannan can both opt out of their deals if they aren't in the majors by June. Lannan can opt out if he's not on the roster by June 14. Matsuzaka, since he's been in the bigs for six-plus years, receives certain rights: The Mets must tell him five days before Opening Day if he's made the team. Otherwise, they can release him or pay him $100,000 to send him to the minors. Matsuzaka can opt out on June 1 if he's not in the majors.

Mets | Still looking for pitching

Mon, 20 Jan 2014 15:19:10 -0800

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the team isn't done searching for starting pitching, even after signing SP John Lannan. Lannan and SP Jenrry Mejia figure to be the main competitors for the final rotation spot behind SPs Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese, Zack Wheeler and Dillon Gee.
