Royals | Edinson Volquez gets lit up

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 21:33:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez yielded 12 runs -- 11 earned -- on eight hits and three walks in just one inning against the Houston Astros on Friday, June 24.

Fantasy Tip: Well, that escalated quickly. Volquez entered the game with a 4.12 ERA on the season, but by the time Ned Yost mercifully removed him it had ballooned all the way up to 5.15. Granted, it's only one start, but Volquez has been getting progressively worse each month in 2016. At this stage his value lies in AL-only leagues until further notice.

Royals | Edinson Volquez gets plenty of support

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 21:07:55 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed five earned runs, eight hits and no walks with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a win Saturday, June 18, against the Detroit Tigers. He threw 67 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez received plenty of support from his offense in this game. He has seven wins, but also a mediocre 4.12 ERA on the season. He remains a decent AL-only fantasy option and worth a look in deeper mixed formats and DFS play.

Royals | Edinson Volquez goes seven strong

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 23:29:29 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed two hits and four walks over seven scoreless innings with three strikeouts in a win Monday, June 13, against the Kansas City Royals.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez entered 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in two June starts, including a loss in Cleveland June 3. Perhaps this quality start will get him back on track for his nervous fantasy owners.

Royals | Edinson Volquez suffers loss Wednesday

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 18:51:53 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez (5-6) allowed four runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday, June 8, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez has allowed four runs or more in four of his last five starts while being unable to make it beyond the seventh inning in any of those appearances. He should be viewed as a risky play for his next outing against the Cleveland Indians Tuesday, June 14.

Royals | Edinson Volquez picks up win

Sat, 14 May 2016 06:46:26 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed one run on six hits in seven innings against the Atlanta Braves Friday, May 13, to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez snapped a three-game losing streak with his win Friday. He has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his eight starts this season. He is scheduled to face the Boston Red Sox in his next start and could be a risky option for some owners.

Royals | Edinson Volquez spins another gem

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 20:23:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed five hits and struck out five over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Detroit Tigers Thursday, April 21, lowering his ERA to 1.46.

Fantasy Tip: Enjoy the fast start from Volquez, but don't expect him to be more than a No. 4 fantasy starter over the long haul.

Royals | Kris Medlen named fifth starter

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 11:18:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen has won the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, although manager Ned Yost said he may have his turn skipped the first time around. SPs Edinson Volquez, Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Chris Young are the club's first four starters.

Fantasy Tip: SPs Chien-Ming Wang, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee were among Medlen's chief competition for the job throughout spring training camp. Medlen went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in four Cactus League starts but had 15 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander can be ignored outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Royals | Edinson Volquez to start opener

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 08:40:37 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez will be the opening day starter against the New York Mets Sunday, April 3.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez is coming off a solid 2015 season when he finished with a 13-9 record and a 3.55 ERA. He should be a solid fantasy option if he is able to stay healthy this season and could be a middle-round pick in drafts.

Royals | Yordano Ventura, Edinson Volquez held back

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 12:07:58 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Yordano Ventura (illness) and Edinson Volquez (arm) will be skipped in their next spring turns, according to manager Ned Yost. Volquez is dealing with a dead arm.

Fantasy Tip: Neither issue should affect their availability for opening day. Volquez is more attractive to fantasy owners with his electric swing-and-miss stuff. He is a No. 3 fantasy starter with upside to pitch like an ace for stretches. Volquez can help build your rotation depth, but he's a risk in the ERA and WHIP departments.

Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.
