Padres | Nick Hundley expected to catch Wednesday

Tue, 01 Apr 2014 19:46:57 -0700

San Diego Padres C Nick Hundley is expected to start Wednesday, April 2, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fantasy Tip: Hundley isn't a terrible attractive fantasy option in weekly formats, but those who play in daily fantasy will want to take note.

Padres | Yasmani Grandal has progressed nicely

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 14:01:45 -0700

San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal (knee) has progressed to the point where he has been able to catch nine innings in spring games, and he could make the roster as the second catcher to C Nick Hundley. However, the team likes C Rene Rivera, who is out of minor league options and would likely be scooped up if they try to pass him through waivers.

Fantasy Tip: The Friars probably won't rush Grandal back, since he's ahead of schedule in his rehab from knee surgery. He could be a nice second catching option for those in two-catcher leagues in the second half of the season, though.

Padres | Likely to carry two catchers

Sun, 16 Feb 2014 20:21:16 -0800

While it is possible the San Diego Padres could carry three catchers to open the season, the likely scenario is carrying two catchers. Cs Yasmani Grandal and Nick Hundley are expected to be the top two guys, with C Rene Rivera likely on the outside looking in.

Padres | Yasmani Grandal could be ready for Opening Day

Sun, 02 Feb 2014 11:02:10 -0800

San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal (knee) could be ready in time for Opening Day, according to general manager Josh Byrnes. "He says he feels good and he certainly looks good," Byrnes said, adding that he will be held back during spring training even if he feels 100 percent. If Grandal is not ready for the season opener, C Nick Hundley is expected to start behind the plate.

Padres | Nick Hundley to paternity list

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 14:59:15 -0700

The San Diego Padres placed C Nick Hundley on the paternity list Thursday, Aug. 15, and recalled C Chris Robinson from the minors in a corresponding move. Also, SP Jason Marquis (elbow) was moved to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Hundley will only be out a maximum of three games. Robinson and Rene Rivera will split the catching duties until then. They aren't worthy of addition in any fantasy format.

Padres | Yasmani Grandal's injury serious

Mon, 08 Jul 2013 16:13:54 -0700

San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal (knee) will have surgery in a couple of weeks for damage to his right anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament.

Fantasy Tip: This is obviously bad news for Grandal owners. He can be dropped in the majority of leagues at this time, even though there's a chance he could return later this year. Nick Hundley will benefit from taking over the main catching duties.

Padres | Expected to send down a catcher

Mon, 27 May 2013 15:19:23 -0700

The San Diego Padres are expected to option C Nick Hundley or C John Baker to Triple-A Tucson when C Yasmani Grandal comes off the restricted list because the team likely will not keep three catchers.

Padres | Yasmani Grandal to begin playing in games

Wed, 15 May 2013 14:49:11 -0700

San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal will leave extended spring training and report to Triple-A Tucson Saturday, May 18, and he's eligible to come off the restricted list May 28 after being suspended for the first 50 games of the season. "He feels good, everything is solid, offensively and defensively," general manager Josh Byrnes said recently. "We will get him ready to play in those games and evaluate where he is and where our roster is." C John Baker is hitting only .115 and will likely be optioned to the minors to make room for Grandal.

Fantasy Tip: Grandal looked good in his major league audition last year, but the PED suspension makes us question how much of his production was actually real. It's unclear how much time he'll split with Nick Hundley, too. It's time to snatch him up in NL-only leagues if he's out there, but you can probably wait on him in mixed formats.
