Cubs | Jon Lester struggles on pickoff throw

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 09:40:55 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester threw over to first base on a pickoff attempt for the first time Monday, April 13, since April 30 of 2013, and he airmailed the throw into right field. Lester allowed just 12 steals in 16 attempts in 2013 and 16 in 21 attempts last year thanks to his quick slide step with a runner on first. The St. Louis Cardinals stole three bases off him on opening night, and the Cincinnati Reds had another last night.

Fantasy Tip: It's looking like Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) may have a case of the yips on throws to first base to hold runners on, and it explains why he went all of last year (and the playoffs) without a single throw over. It remains to be seen how it'll affect his overall numbers and ERA, but opposing teams are likely to exploit this weakness and become even more aggressive on the basepaths against him.

Cubs | Jon Lester hit hard by Reds

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:55:29 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed six runs and 10 hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, April 13, and his ERA shot up to 7.84 after two starts this year. "He's still at the end of spring training right now," manager Joe Maddon said. "He'll be fine. I have no doubt about that."

Fantasy Tip: Remember that Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) dealt with a bout of dead arm in spring training, and like Maddon mentioned, he may not be at top form to start the year. You'll want to be wary of Lester again in his next start at FantasyScore until he shows us that he can settle down.

Cubs | David Ross to catch Monday

Sun, 12 Apr 2015 12:09:11 -0700

Chicago Cubs C David Ross will play against the Cincinnati Reds Monday, April 13, when SP Jon Lester will be on the mound.

Fantasy Tip: It appears as though Ross ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will be Lester's personal catcher this season, so it is no surprise to see him penciled into Monday's lineup. He is an affordable option for FantasyScore owners who normally punt the catcher position.

Cubs | Jon Lester not worried about pickoffs

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 15:49:27 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester, who hasn't attempted a pickoff throw since 2013, said it wasn't a big deal. Lester insisted he's been working on all facets of his game. "They got me working on something different, so there's always that. When you try something different, whether it's a mechanical thing or you're working on a pitch in a game, there's always that doubt. So (when) you get comfortable with it and do it, then obviously there's no doubt anymore."

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) owners should be mildly concerned with his lack of pickoff attempts, since the Cardinals used it against him to get huge leads at first base and easily steal several bags. In the long run, it likely won't drastically affect his fantasy value, but it's worth watching. On Monday against the Cincinnati Reds, a team that can run often, Lester may be a risky FantasyScore play at a high price.

Cubs | Jon Lester to start Sunday

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 14:51:25 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester will start Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) may be limited in his pitch count to around 80 pitches, all to combat the "dead arm" he has been feeling. Keep this in mind and leave him on your bench until it is determined the arm trouble won't be a factor.

Cubs | Jon Lester says he's ready

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 14:12:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) wasn't happy with his spring outing Tuesday, March 31, but he said he is ready for his opening night start against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, April 5. However, it doesn't appear that he'll be 100% for his first start of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Lester won't be available at FantasyScore for his opening start. He should be considered a fantasy ace, but because he might have his pitch count capped in his first start, there should be consideration given to benching him against the Cardinals out of the gate in formats other than daily.

Cubs | Jon Lester to pitch in minors game

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 18:14:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will start a minor league game Tuesday, March 31, at the team's complex, his final tuneup before the regular season opener. The Cubs want to be able to control his pitch count and situations Tuesday. He was scratched from his last spring start March 21 due to a tired arm.

Fantasy Tip: Lester remains on track for the regular season, but he draws the high-octane St. Louis Cardinals in his first start. At $7,700 (or 15.4% of cap) he is not a recommended option in FantasyScore.

Cubs | Jon Lester still on track

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:38:00 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will make another minor league start next week and should approach 75 to 80 pitches. He is still on course to start opening day Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: While it is difficult to bench a front-of-the-rotation starter, Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) will likely on a pitch count and faces a solid offensive Cardinals team in his first start. It could be a wise move to give him a start to prove his health, especially in formats with an innings cap. Lester should still be considered a low-end fantasy ace and worth targeting in the early middle rounds.

Cubs | Jon Lester's plan for remainder of spring

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:23:10 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester's (arm) final two spring starts will be in controlled minor league games, according to manager Joe Maddon. "We just want to be able to control what he's doing," Maddon said. "I'm not concerned who he pitches against. He just needs somebody standing up there so he gets the requisite number of pitches thrown. If he says he feels good I feel good." Lester will also be on a 60-pitch limit in his start Thursday, March 26, and an approximately 80-pitch limit for the following start, according to Maddon and pitching coach Chris Bosio.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to check back for updates on Lester's progress leading into opening day. Reiterating previous tips, it might not be an ideal spot to utilize Lester in his first start with a projected pitch count and potentially cold weather. This is particularly true for leagues which have a strict innings cap and daily contests.

Cubs | Jon Lester could be on pitch count

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 14:26:40 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) may have a "restricted" pitch count for his opening day start Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: A pitch count isn't ideal for fantasy value, as there is potential Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) could be pulled early, especially if it is a cold night. It isn't an ideal matchup against the Cardinals, either. It could be wise to bench Lester in leagues with a year-long innings cap, too. There is also still potential his "dead arm" lingers, so continue to check back for updates leading up to opening day.
