Cubs | Jon Lester flirts with no-hitter

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 21:57:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Monday, July 6, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He ended up allowing two unearned runs and two hits with two walks over seven innings in a hard-luck loss. He also struck out eight batters.

Fantasy Tip: The biggest news was Lester's first career hit, snapping a 0-for-66 lifetime mark. Lester ($7,500; or 15.0% of cap) has been pitching better lately, and remains a solid FantasyScore play despite a lack of run support.

Cubs | Jon Lester sharp

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 22:08:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed no runs on five hits while striking out seven against the New York Mets Wednesday, July 1.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) hasn't been as dominant as expected in his first year in Chicago, and although he shut down the Mets, he is by no means a safe bet at FantasyScore in his next scheduled start against a St. Louis Cardinals team with a much better offense.

Cubs | Early hook for Jon Lester

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 19:14:59 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester had his shortest outing in more than three years, allowing four runs, four hits and four walks in four innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($8,500, 17.0% of cap) saw his ERA climb to 4.03 on the year, and he hasn't picked up a win since May 16. He inconsistency from one start to the next makes him tough to trust at FantasyScore at his price tag.

Cubs | Jon Lester has decent outing

Mon, 15 Jun 2015 04:52:16 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed one run on five hits Sunday, June 14, in a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He came in winless over his previous four outings with a 10.61 ERA. In his previous start against the Detroit Tigers, Lester allowed five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($8,000, 16.0% of cap) remains a solid option for all FantasyScore lineups, mainly because he has a strong team supporting him in the background. It looks like he has settled down after a rough stretch.

Cubs | Jon Lester has solid outing

Wed, 27 May 2015 20:53:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings against the Washington Nationals Wednesday, May 27. He struck out 10 batters and walked two during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) has pitched well in his six starts this month and has won four of his last five decisions. He is scheduled to face the Miami Marlins in his next start and should be a solid starting option on FantasyScore.

Cubs | Jon Lester excelling in May

Wed, 27 May 2015 10:08:04 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester is 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA in five May starts heading into his outing against the Washington Nationals Wednesday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) has turned things around after an April that had his fantasy owners pretty worried. In the long run, the southpaw should be just fine. At FantasyScore today, though, paying up for Lester against a Nationals squad that has been hot the past month may be a mistake.

Cubs | Jon Lester earns first NL victory

Fri, 01 May 2015 16:39:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester worked seven scoreless innings Friday, May 1, against the Milwaukee Brewers to earn his first victory. He allowed just three hits while walking only one and striking out four batters. Lester retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced, earning his first win since Sept. 19, 2013, when he was with the Oakland Athletics.

Fantasy Tip: Lester went 0-2 with a 6.23 in his first month of the season, but he has recorded back-to-back quality starts and finally earned his first win. At $7,400 (or 14.8% of cap) he is still a little bit overpriced in FantasyScore, but if he starts pitching like this on a regular basis he will be underpriced before too long.

Cubs | Jon Lester a slow starter

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 11:03:25 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester is 13-15 with a 4.04 ERA in the first month of the season in his career, and he's 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA in three games in 2015. He'll make his fourth start against the Cincinnati Reds Friday, April 24. He allowed six runs and 10 hits in six innings to the Reds April 13.

Fantasy Tip: It's still early, but Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) owners should be mildly concerned, especially considering he has major issues holding runners on base. While he's in his early-season rut, it's best to stay clear of him at FantasyScore, especially at his price point. The Reds have been one of the better offensive clubs in baseball in the first month.

Cubs | Jon Lester struggles on pickoff throw

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 09:40:55 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester threw over to first base on a pickoff attempt for the first time Monday, April 13, since April 30 of 2013, and he airmailed the throw into right field. Lester allowed just 12 steals in 16 attempts in 2013 and 16 in 21 attempts last year thanks to his quick slide step with a runner on first. The St. Louis Cardinals stole three bases off him on opening night, and the Cincinnati Reds had another last night.

Fantasy Tip: It's looking like Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) may have a case of the yips on throws to first base to hold runners on, and it explains why he went all of last year (and the playoffs) without a single throw over. It remains to be seen how it'll affect his overall numbers and ERA, but opposing teams are likely to exploit this weakness and become even more aggressive on the basepaths against him.

Cubs | Jon Lester hit hard by Reds

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:55:29 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed six runs and 10 hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, April 13, and his ERA shot up to 7.84 after two starts this year. "He's still at the end of spring training right now," manager Joe Maddon said. "He'll be fine. I have no doubt about that."

Fantasy Tip: Remember that Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) dealt with a bout of dead arm in spring training, and like Maddon mentioned, he may not be at top form to start the year. You'll want to be wary of Lester again in his next start at FantasyScore until he shows us that he can settle down.
