Pirates | Jon Niese goes six in defeat

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 15:38:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese saw his record drop to 6-5 after losing his start Thursday, June 23, versus the San Francisco Giants. The left-hander worked six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks, including a homer. He also struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: As expected, Niese has settled in as merely an option for NL-only leagues in his first year with the Pirates. The 29-year-old peaked years ago with the Mets, and his potential for a re-emergence is relatively low, especially while on a team that's currently struggling. Owners should expect outings like today if they opt to stream him for any given matchup.

Pirates | Jon Niese shelled

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 20:24:23 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed a season-high 11 hits and season-high eight runs while walking one and striking out five over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, June 12.

Fantasy Tip: Niese isn't nearly as bad as he looked Sunday, but a lack of consistency limits his appeal to NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Jon Niese shuts down old mates

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 20:44:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed just four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings in a win against the New York Mets, his former team, in Game 1 of a doubleheader Tuesday, June 7. He also struck out two batters.

Fantasy Tip: Niese has managed five quality starts over his past six outings, picking up the pace after a slow start with his new team. He has won each of his past three decisions and hasn't lost since May 9. He has emerged as a must-start in NL-only fantasy leagues, deeper mixed formats and DFS play.

Pirates | Jon Niese ready to face former mates

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 22:10:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese is scheduled to face the New York Mets in Game 1 of a doubleheader Tuesday, June 7. He has allowed two runs or less in each of his past four starts, going 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA after managing a 3-2 record with a 5.94 ERA over his first six outings.

Fantasy Tip: Niese is a risky play in DFS against his former teammates, as he could be a bit amped up. He is also facing Steven Matz, a top-flight pitcher at 7-1 with a 2.60 ERA overall on the season.

Pirates | Jon Niese cruises again

Fri, 27 May 2016 22:38:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese held the Texas Rangers to one run on seven hits over six innings of work on Friday, May 27. It was Niese's fourth quality start, and he moved his record on the year to 5-2.

Fantasy Tip: Ever since taking a pounding from the Chicago Cubs on May 3, Niese has been a different pitcher, allowing seven runs in 25 2/3 innings to lower his ERA from 5.94 to 4.42 and earning a pair of wins. He's definitely worth adding in larger mixed leagues.

Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez gets a rare rest

Sat, 21 May 2016 12:47:26 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez is not in the lineup on Saturday, May 21, against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese. Gonzalez has played in 40 of the Rockies' first 41 games, starting in 39. 1B Mark Reynolds will bat fourth, OF Gerardo Parra will slide over from left to right field and hit sixth, while OF Ryan Raburn will replace Parra in left and bat fifth.

Fantasy Tip: It's been a rough stretch at the plate to say the least for CarGo, who is batting .186 with a solo homer - which also accounts for his only RBI - this month and hitless over his last four games to boot. Raburn is always a savvy DFS play against left-handers, while Reynolds is sporting a .328 average despite striking out at his usual heavy rate. Both Raburn and Reynolds are sensible low-cost daily options today given how inconsistent Niese has been this season.

Pirates | Jon Niese no longer two-start pitcher

Tue, 10 May 2016 22:38:31 -0700

Due to the rainout Tuesday, May 10, against the Cincinnati Reds, SP Jon Niese will not start over the weekend against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Niese was slated to be a two-start pitcher for those in seasonal fantasy formats, but now he'll be pushed back and will be a two-start option next week barring additional weather interruptions.

Pirates | Jon Niese punished by Chicago

Tue, 03 May 2016 23:24:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed six earned runs, nine hits and five walks with just three strikeouts over five innings in a loss Tuesday, May 3, against the Chicago Cubs, his first setback of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Niese started out 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA over his first four starts, but he is 0-1 with a 9.90 ERA over his past two outings. He received an average of 7.0 runs of support in his first five games, helping to keep his unblemished record intact, but he was exposed a bit Tuesday. He is more of an NL-only middle rotation fantasy option, but certainly avoid him in mixed play.

Pirates | Jon Niese runs record to 3-0

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 23:32:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed four earned runs, 10 hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings in a win Friday, April 22, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, running his record to 3-0.

Fantasy Tip: Niese received plenty of run support, as he wasn't particularly sharp in this outing. His strikeouts have decreased in each of his past three starts, but he remains a decent fantasy option in NL-only leagues, deeper mixed formats and DFS play due to solid run support from his offense.

Pirates | Jon Niese logs quality start in win

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 14:09:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese picked up his first win with his new team Monday, April 11, against the Detroit Tigers. He logged six innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits, including two home runs. The left-hander also walked one and struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing special here from Niese, but owners should be willing to take this kind of outing from the veteran southpaw with his best days behind him. It also goes down as a quality start, which is especially impressive considering it came against a tough Tigers lineup on the road. There's a chance he develops into a decent NL-only option, and may have potential in deep mixed leagues if he gets into a groove.
