The Cincinnati Reds and and SP Homer Bailey are making progress on a new contract, but are not there just yet. "We've made progress," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "There are still some outstanding issues. Hopefully they get resolved in the next 24 hours or else people are going to have to suit it up and go east."

The Cincinnati Reds and SP Homer Bailey are still talking about a contract extension. "We had another conversation today. We'll continue to keep talking. We'll talk again in another day or so and get something resolved one way or the other. There has not been a lot of progress, but good conversations anyhow," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty brought manager Dusty Baker in for a end-of-the-season meeting and wanted to fire hitting coach Brook Jacoby. Baker said: "If you want to fire someone, fire me." Jocketty opted to fire Baker, and a source said the two's relationship had been strained or distant of late. Baker has no plans to retire.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty indicated his team may try to lock up a couple of arbitration-eligible players like SP's Mat Latos and Homer Bailey to multi-year contracts. "We've talked to a couple of them," Jocketty said. "Nothing has gotten really serious yet. With it having been Christmas, and a couple of guys were on vacations, we didn't expect to get going until after the holidays."

"There was no breakdown," Jocketty said. "You just don't work out a contract in a few hours. These things take time." Jocketty wouldn't say whether the Reds had offered Baker a contract.
