Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has taken over the decision making of all of the team's baseball matters, for the time being. This is prompting rumors that president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest and president David Samson could be fired after the season. "He has marginalized the front office," said a major league source, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. "The front office isn't making decisions. Loria makes them all."

Marlins | Plenty of competition in ST

The Miami Marlins will have at least 71 players in camp when the team opens spring training Feb. 11, and that includes 31 non-roster invitees. Of those 31 non-roster players, 14 are from the organization. The 17 minor-league free agents looking to catch on include Ps Jonathan Albaladejo, John Maine, Doug Mathis, Zach Phillips, Chad Qualls, Kevin Slowey, Jordan Smith, Mitch Talbot and Michael Wuertz. The non-roster minor-league free agents are C Craig Tatum, INFs Matt Downs, Nick Green, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Ed Lucas and Chris Valaika. The OFs are Jordan Brown and Austin Kearns. "It's a relatively large group and a lot of opportunity and I think there will be some good competition in a number of areas," team executive Larry Beinfest said.

Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria refuted a report that said president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest would be fired and replaced by assistant general manager Dan Jennings. Loria did not say whether Beinfest or manager Ozzie Guillen would be retained.

Florida Marlins executive Larry Beinfest said the team is considering moving OF Chris Coghlan to third base next season, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. "Whether he plays third or not, we'll see," Beinfest said. The team could also move Coghlan to second base if they are unable to agree to a contract extension with 2B Dan Uggla and end up trading him. However, the preference is to keep Uggla with the team.

Clark Spencer, of The Miami Herald, reports Florida Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest envisions a rotation headed by SP's Josh M. Johnson and Ricky Nolasco, and the other three spots will be filled in from a group of six candidates: Chris Volstad, Rick VandenHurk, Anibal Sanchez, Andrew Miller, Sean West and Hayden Penn. "I would say the guys that are locks right now are Johnson and Nolasco, and after that guys are going to have to come in and compete,'' Beinfest said. "You're looking at a group where everybody is [under] 27 years old, and that's a pretty good situation to be in.''
