The Texas Rangers want to develop the catcher position, as many on the team believe it has been a problem since C Ivan Rodriguez left many years ago. "It's a topic of conversation, absolutely," says GM Jon Daniels. "We've had some guys come over here as big-time catching prospects, but we haven't developed our own long-term championship-caliber starter." The top prospect on the team is C Jorge Alfaro, who was at Class A Hickory last season.

Detroit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler ripped Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels in a recent interview for ESPN The Magazine. "Daniels is a sleazeball," Kinsler said. "He got in good with the owners and straight pushed Ryan out. He thought all the things he should get credit for, Ryan got credit for. It's just ego. Once we went to the World Series, everybody's ego got huge, except for Nolan's."

Sources indicate Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan could leave the team as soon as the end of spring training. In a recent reorganization Ryan's title with the team remains as CEO. Sources say general manager Jon Daniels now has final say over all baseball decisions and Rick George has the final say over business decisions.

In an interview with Dallas radio station KTCK-AM, Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler will stay at that position through the season unless something happens organically to force the switch to a new position. "To answer your question, Ian is our second baseman. Could that change at some point? Only if it happens in really organically. It's not something we're going to manipulate to make happen. Could it change after the year, or in a future year? Yeah. I think that's what we discussed when we signed the deal," Daniels said.

The Texas Rangers avoided arbitration with RP Neftali Feliz on a one-year deal worth $2.9 million. Feliz missed most of 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. General manager Jon Daniels said he would likely bring back Feliz as a reliever in 2013.

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels identified two remaining needs for the offseason: a veteran starting pitcher who would either come in as the guaranteed fifth starter or compete with in-house candidates for the job, and a utility infielder. Daniels said there is room in the payroll budget "within reason" to add. The Rangers currently have 14 players, including rehabilitating P's Colby Lewis and Joakim Soria, under contract at a total salary of $94.5 million.
