Giants | Denard Span feeling more comfortable

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 12:38:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (hip) said he feels more confident in his health and less restricted every day following his offseason hip surgery. After beginning the season with a .226 batting average and a .310 on-base percentage through the first 17 games of the season, Span has improved through his past five games with .253 and .344 marks, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Span was limited to just 61 games in 2015, but dating back to 2014 he has returned a respectable .297/.357/.414 slash line with 45 stolen bases, including his three in 2016. He can be a strong contributor in runs, stolen bases and batting average, and setting the table for a strong lineup also helps his upside. Span should be owned in all fantasy formats.

Giants | Denard Span, Brandon Belt sitting

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:23:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span and 1B Brandon Belt are not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley Sunday, April 24. C Buster Posey will start at first base, while C Trevor Brown will start at catcher and is batting sixth. OF Gregor Blanco will start in center field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Brown has posted solid numbers in his limited playing time and could be used in daily fantasy leagues. Blanco has gone 4-for-9 with three triples in the last seven days and could be a decent option in daily leagues.

Giants | Brandon Crawford back in lineup

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 15:14:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants SS Brandon Crawford (hip) is back in the lineup Saturday, April 16, and will hit seventh against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir. Giants OF Denard Span will return to his usual spot in center after a day of rest and bat leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford's hip issue is apparently a minor one, although the Giants sorely missed his Gold Glove defense in the opener on Friday when replacement Kelby Tomlinson was charged with two errors. Crawford is off to a slow start this season and should probably remain on benches in most leagues for the time being. It is worth noting Crawford was the only San Francisco regular not to get a hit when the Giants roughed up Kazmir last weekend.

Giants | Denard Span, Brandon Crawford not playing

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 15:15:47 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span and SS Brandon Crawford (hip) are both out of the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed SP Clayton Kershaw Friday, April 15. OF Angel Pagan moves up to the leadoff spot. OF Gregor Blanco draws the start in center field and is hitting ninth, while 2B Kelby Tomlinson is starting at shortstop and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford's injury isn't believed to be serious, and he might've been out tonight anyway while going against Kershaw. Put him back in your starting lineups when he returns. Blanco and Tomlinson should be avoided in daily games. Pagan is hitting .267 (16-for-60) with five doubles in his career against Kershaw and is a contrarian daily pick tonight.

Giants | Denard Span back in lineup

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 10:11:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (illness) returned to the lineup Thursday, April 7, in the leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Span was off to a smoking .333-1-5 start before missing yesterday's game with the flu. The downside is it's against lefty Alex Wood. Span, a left-handed hitter, hit .239 against lefties and .311 against righties the last three years. Today might be a day to pass on him in DFS.

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 09:18:57 -0700

Updating an earlier report, San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (illness) is out of the lineup Wednesday, April 6, with the flu.

Fantasy Tip: Angel Pagan is leading off against Taylor Jungmann, but Pagan needs to stay healthy and show his younger form before he's a legit DFS option.

Giants | Denard Span has big opener

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 16:10:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span homered and drove in five runs in the Giants' opening day win over the Milwaukee Brewers Monday, April 4. 3B Matt Duffy also added a home run and four RBI Monday. Span went 2-for-4 in the game and scored twice.

Fantasy Tip: You couldn't have asked for a better start if you own Span or Duffy. Span is a solid option for outfield depth in deep mixed leagues. He's helpful for his average and should score plenty of runs setting the table in SF. Duffy will remain valuable as corner infield insurance, but he's expected to take a step back at the plate in 2016.

Giants | Denard Span has bone bruise

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 14:30:28 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (shoulder) has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his right shoulder, but he still plans to play center field Friday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: After being limited to 61 games last year, entering his age-32 season already battling injuries isn't ideal for Span's fantasy stock. He remains a viable late-round target in mixed leagues because of his speed and contact skills, though. It is worth monitoring his health and production leading into the season, so stay tuned for updates.

Giants | Denard Span injures right shoulder

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 15:19:05 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (shoulders) needed to ice his right shoulder after landing hard following an attempted catch Wednesday, March 16. He was already nursing a sore left shoulder and will be re-evaluated Thursday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, Span has been a reliable fantasy option. He was limited to just 61 games last season, though, and he is already nursing injuries entering his age-32 season. He remains a viable late-round option given his speed and contact skills, but beware of the sharp decline that can accompany players past their prime, especially when they're also dealing with injuries.
