Giants | Denard Span gets things started

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 20:50:04 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span went 3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs Tuesday, June 21, against the Pittsburgh Pirates to raise his average to .254.

Fantasy Tip: Span is a streaky hitter, and lately he has been boom or bust. He has four multi-hit games over his past 12 outings, but he also gone went hitless in six games during the span. He remains useful in most NL-only fantasy leagues and deeper mixed formats despite the lack of consistency.

Giants | Angel Pagan leading off vs. Pirates

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 12:24:22 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan is leading off against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke Monday, June 20. OF Denard Span is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Pagan is nothing more than a low-end outfielder in deep mixed leagues, but he receives a nice value boost leading off Monday. He's a potential value option in daily contests. Span is struggling in his first season with the Giants, as he has an underwhelming .248/.333/.340 slash line and stole just seven bases in 12 attempts. He's tough to roster outside of deep mixed leagues and NL-only setups.

Giants | Denard Span receives a day off

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 10:51:49 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 15. OF Gregor Blanco is starting in center field and is hitting leadoff against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson.

Fantasy Tip: Blanco gains some daily fantasy intrigue hitting leadoff today, but the outfielder doesn't have much pop (zero home runs) to help much in daily games. He's a sleeper pick, though, as he'll have more opportunities to run and score runs atop the order.

Giants | Denard Span has hip injury

Sat, 28 May 2016 12:01:02 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (hip) has been scratched from the starting lineup against the Colorado Rockies Saturday, May 28, because of a bruised right hip. OF Gregor Blanco will bat leadoff and play center field in his place, with OF Jarrett Parker batting seventh and playing left field.

Fantasy Tip: Span is experiencing some residual soreness after crashing into the outfield wall earlier this week but the injury is considered minor. Blanco is 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles in his career versus Rockies SP Eddie Butler, so DFS players may want to consider taking a flier on him this afternoon. Parker is just 3-for-14 this season and is nothing more than a source of desperation cap relief.

Giants | Two Giants struggle against James Shields

Thu, 19 May 2016 12:30:48 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey is hitting .211 (4-for-19) against San Diego Padres SP James Shields. OF Denard Span is batting .147 (5-for-34) off shields in his career. The Giants face Shields and the Padres Thursday, May 19.

Fantasy Tip: You aren't sitting Posey in any format despite his poor numbers in 19 at-bats against Shields. However, you might want to think twice about paying up for him in DFS. Span is posting mediocre counting stats across the board despite a decent .279 batting average.

Giants | Denard Span posts 4-for-4 showing

Sun, 15 May 2016 05:28:08 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span went 4-for-4 with two runs and a triple during the Giants' 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: Span is turning it around in the leadoff spot with a .427 on-base percentage through his past 21 games. However, it has only resulted in 10 runs and a stolen base, and Span has been caught stealing three times during the stretch. The lack of results despite living on base is a touch concerning, but there is likely positive regression ahead in the counting stats while he'll likely regress closer to the .358 OBP he posted over the past two seasons leading into 2016. View Span as a low-end starter in the majority of yearly leagues going forward.

Giants | Denard Span not starting

Sun, 08 May 2016 12:21:04 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Eddie Butler Sunday, May 8. OF Gregor Blanco will start in center field, while OF Mac Williamson will start in left field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Williamson has recorded three hits and one RBI over the last three games but has not received a lot of playing time this season. Williamson may not be the best option for owners to consider.

Giants | Denard Span feeling more comfortable

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 12:38:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (hip) said he feels more confident in his health and less restricted every day following his offseason hip surgery. After beginning the season with a .226 batting average and a .310 on-base percentage through the first 17 games of the season, Span has improved through his past five games with .253 and .344 marks, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Span was limited to just 61 games in 2015, but dating back to 2014 he has returned a respectable .297/.357/.414 slash line with 45 stolen bases, including his three in 2016. He can be a strong contributor in runs, stolen bases and batting average, and setting the table for a strong lineup also helps his upside. Span should be owned in all fantasy formats.

Giants | Denard Span, Brandon Belt sitting

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:23:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span and 1B Brandon Belt are not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley Sunday, April 24. C Buster Posey will start at first base, while C Trevor Brown will start at catcher and is batting sixth. OF Gregor Blanco will start in center field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Brown has posted solid numbers in his limited playing time and could be used in daily fantasy leagues. Blanco has gone 4-for-9 with three triples in the last seven days and could be a decent option in daily leagues.

Giants | Brandon Crawford back in lineup

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 15:14:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants SS Brandon Crawford (hip) is back in the lineup Saturday, April 16, and will hit seventh against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir. Giants OF Denard Span will return to his usual spot in center after a day of rest and bat leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford's hip issue is apparently a minor one, although the Giants sorely missed his Gold Glove defense in the opener on Friday when replacement Kelby Tomlinson was charged with two errors. Crawford is off to a slow start this season and should probably remain on benches in most leagues for the time being. It is worth noting Crawford was the only San Francisco regular not to get a hit when the Giants roughed up Kazmir last weekend.
