Kansas City Royals SP Bruce Chen (gluteus) has been nursing a right left gluteus muscle, and manager Ned Yost has scratched him from his scheduled start Thursday, April 17, against the Houston Astros. SP James Shields moves up a day to start Thursday, with SP James Shields working Friday, April 18. Chen will attempt to make his next scheduled start Saturday, April 19, against the Minnesota Twins.

Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore said SPs James Shields, Jason Vargas, Jeremy Guthrie and Bruce Chen are penciled into the rotation to start the year. Moore suggested that SP Yordano Ventura may have a leg up on the competition for the fifth and final rotation spot this spring. Moore also said they won't hesitate to use Ventura in the bullpen "if that's how it unfolds." "We think he's ready for the major leagues. Certainly spring training will help validate that opinion," Moore said, adding, "We expect him to be one of our 12 pitchers when we break camp unless something unforeseen happens." Ps Luke Hochevar, Wade Davis, Danny Duffy and Chris Dwyer are all a notch behind Ventura heading into spring training.

Kansas City Royals SP James Shields said he would be willing to talk with the team about a contract extension. "Yeah, I'd definitely be open-minded to it, for sure," Shields said. "A player in my position, when I have one more year left before free agency, I'm definitely open to it. I mean, I like Kansas City, I like the organization and I like the direction we're going."
