Padres | James Shields could be hard to trade

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 09:05:37 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields might go unclaimed on trade waivers because he has three years and $65 million left on his current contract.

Fantasy Tip: It seems like the Padres are more likely to trade Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross at the deadline than Shields ($7,400, 14.8% of cap). The wins have been hard to come by for Shields of late, but he remains a solid fantasy pitcher with an elite 10.2 K/9 rate.

Padres | Friars looking to move James Shields

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 10:09:12 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields is a player the Padres really want to move before the trade deadline.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has struggled a bit in his transition to the National League, but his home/road splits are drastic. He has a 5.01 ERA on the road with a 2.47 ERA at home. His FantasyScore value would take a dip if dealt.

Padres | James Shields notches eighth win

Sat, 18 Jul 2015 05:48:08 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields struck out six batters over five innings while allowing one run on seven hits and four walks during the Padres 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies Friday, July 17.

Fantasy Tip: It was a short outing for Shields ($7,300, 14.6% of cap), but he lasted long enough to pick up the win. He sports an uncharacteristically high 3.92 ERA and 4.21 FIP but is also striking out batters at a career-best rate (10.1 K/9). Expect the workhorse starter to level off his ratios and view him as a No. 2 arm for your fake rotation down the stretch in seasonal leagues.

Padres | Rockies have hurt James Shields

Fri, 17 Jul 2015 15:37:00 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields is 3-1 with a 4.75 ERA in five career starts against the Colorado Rockies, who he faces Friday, July 17. Shields gave up eight combined runs in 11 1/3 innings against Colorado in two starts earlier this year.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his bad numbers against Colorado, Shields ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) remains an intriguing daily play because of his 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings this year, which is among the highest in baseball. Plus, he has pitched much better at pitcher-friendly Petco Park (2.77 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) than on the road (5.01 ERA, 1.41 WHIP).

Padres | James Shields could be trade candidate

Fri, 10 Jul 2015 14:39:31 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields could be an interesting trade target for the Los Angeles Dodgers or Chicago Cubs, if the Padres become full-blown sellers before the trade deadline, according to ESPN analyst Buster Olney.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) hasn't been quiet as sharp as he has been in past years, but his 126 punchouts over 111 1/3 innings play in all fantasy formats. He would likely experience an uptick in wins pitching in front of a better offense, too.

Padres | James Shields mired in winless streak

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 20:49:38 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields allowed one unearned run with two hits, a walk and three strikeouts over three innings in a no-decision Monday, July 6, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,300; or 14.6% of cap) is now winless in six straight outings, but he still has back-to-back quality starts and he has pitched at least six innings in four of his past five starts. He remains a solid FantasyScore option, just expect a tight game with little run support from his offense.

Padres | James Shields rocked

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 19:58:31 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields had his shortest outing of the season Thursday, June 25, allowing seven runs on nine hits in four innings in a loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) appears to be slowing down a bit after a solid start, allowing at least four runs in three of his last four starts. You may to avoid him at FantasyScore in his next start to see if he can right the ship.

Padres | James Shields still unbeaten

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 22:47:15 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields allowed two earned runs, six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings to run his record to 7-0 in a win Wednesday, June 3, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,400; or 14.8% of cap) has an impressive record, but his ERA of 3.58 is just so-so. Still, he has allowed three or fewer earned runs in all but one of his 12 starts while lasting at least six innings in 11 of the outings. He is a must-start for FantasyScore players until he starts to cool off.

Padres | James Shields giving up homers

Fri, 29 May 2015 11:37:13 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields has allowed 15 home runs this season, the most by a starting pitcher in the National League, but he also has 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) hasn't been hurt this season by his tendency to give up home runs. As long as it doesn't hurt his ability to win games, this shouldn't prevent you from putting Shields in your starting lineup every time he pitches.

Padres | James Shields shooting to stay perfect

Tue, 12 May 2015 23:32:58 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields will try to become the first San Diego pitcher to go 5-0 since Justin Germano in 2007 when he throws Wednesday, May 13, against the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,100, 14.2% of cap) has been an ace pitcher for his new team, and he is a must-start in all formats as long as he is off to a hot start like this.
