Padres | James Shields could still be dealt

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 07:34:33 -0800

San Diego Padres SP James Shields is a potential trade candidate, and the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, according to sources. It is believed the Padres would need to retain some salary in any trade.

Fantasy Tip: Shields has made over 30 starts and pitched at least 200 innings in each of the past nine season, which is an incredible feat. He struggled last season with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, but his 9.6 K/9 was a career best. Look for a modest bounce back from Shields in 2015, especially if he finds a new home in the National League. Stay tuned.

Padres | SD drawing interest in starters

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:32:51 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner and James Shields are all drawing significant interest on the trade market, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: All three starters are attractive to other clubs because of the high free-agent prices for starting pitching. As long as they remain in San Diego, they'll all have relatively high prices on the fantasy market because of the pitching-friendly venue they reside in. Stay tuned.

Padres | SD could trade James Shields

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 18:51:10 -0800

The San Diego Padres are reportedly making SP James Shields available to be traded. He is owed $63 million over the final three years of a four-year, $75 million deal, although he can exercise an opt-out clause after the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: In his first year in San Diego, Shields went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 33 starts, with 216 strikeouts over 202 1/3 innings. The right-hander will turn 34 later this month and he could be dealt if the Padres feel that rebuilding is the way to go. Shields should be drafted in the early rounds of all fantasy formats regardless of where he pitches next season.

Padres | James Shields won't start Sunday

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 17:18:04 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields will not start the team's regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, Oct. 4, according to interim manager Pat Murphy. The team will use a relief pitcher to start the game.

Fantasy Tip: In 33 starts this season, Shields ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA and struck out 216 batters over 202 1/3 innings. He can be dropped in redraft fantasy leagues.

Diamondbacks | Paul Goldschmidt not starting Sunday

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:33:48 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt is not starting Sunday, Sept. 27, against the San Diego Padres. 1B Yasmany Tomas is hitting sixth against Padres SP James Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Goldschmidt ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) is getting a normal day off despite the fact he has been hot down the stretch and hot against Shields (.500 average, 4-for-8). Tomas ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is not worth the price as he has little luck against Shields.

Diamondbacks | Brandon Drury out of Sunday lineup

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:25:58 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 2B Brandon Drury is not starting Sunday, Sept. 27, against the San Diego Padres. 2B Aaron Hill is batting second against Padres SP James Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Drury ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) has a .318 average in the past week, but Sunday appears to be a normal off day. Hill ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) has some success against San Diego with a .289 average, so he is worth the low FantasyScore price.

Padres | James Shields earns road win

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 15:48:06 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields earned his first road victory since May when he beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 on Sunday, Aug. 30. Shields allowed one run and six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. He was 0-4 with a 5.63 ERA in his previous eight road starts.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) has had no luck away from Petco Park, and you still may want to be skittish in games outside of San Diego. The Phillies are a decent-hitting team but definitely not a murderer's row of hitters.

Padres | James Shields fading

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 11:04:10 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields is 1-5 since starting the season 7-0, and he has a 4.20 ERA in his last 12 starts.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) is definitely in a rough stretch, and his 1.4 home runs allowed per nine innings this year has really hurt him. However, the fact that he's still striking out over nine hitters per nine innings is saving his fantasy value. On FantasyScore, he's much more attractive when pitching at Petco Park.

Padres | James Shields struggles in loss

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 19:05:59 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields allowed five earned runs, six hits and four walks while striking out seven batters over 6 1/3 innings in a loss against the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Shields ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) hasn't picked up a win since July 1, a span of five starts. In fact, the Padres have lost each of the past five games he has started. Avoid him in FantasyScore until he starts pitching a little better and the team starts giving him a little more run support. Over his past five outings the Padres are averaging just 1.8 runs per game.

Padres | James Shields could be hard to trade

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 09:05:37 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields might go unclaimed on trade waivers because he has three years and $65 million left on his current contract.

Fantasy Tip: It seems like the Padres are more likely to trade Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross at the deadline than Shields ($7,400, 14.8% of cap). The wins have been hard to come by for Shields of late, but he remains a solid fantasy pitcher with an elite 10.2 K/9 rate.
