White Sox | James Shields finally decent

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 18:32:19 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP James Shields had his first decent outing with his new team Thursday, June 23, opposite the Boston Red Sox. The veteran righty was able to last five innings, yielding three runs on five hits and four walks. He also racked up three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Normally, this might not be classified as "decent" but given Shields' significant struggles since joining the White Sox, this has to be seen as a big-time positive development for the 34-year-old. After all, Shields had given up a whopping 31 earned runs over his first four starts in Chicago before today's encouraging outing versus one of the best offenses in baseball. It's still hard to trust him right now, but at least he's headed back in the right direction.

White Sox | James Shields slaughtered again

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 19:56:35 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP James Shields allowed eight earned runs, seven hits, three walks and just two strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings in a loss Saturday, June 18, against the Cleveland Indians. He threw just 30 of his 53 pitches for strikes while slipping to 0-2 with a 21.81 ERA since coming over from the San Diego Padres in a trade.

Fantasy Tip: 'Big Game' James has been a complete and utter disappoint since joining the Pale Hose, and he cannot be trusted by even fantasy owners in the deepest of AL-only leagues right now. Perhaps if he can string together a couple of quality starts he will re-emerge as a useful option, but right now there are no signs of a turnaround.

White Sox | James Shields crushed again

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 22:52:36 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP James Shields allowed seven runs - six earned - and nine hits with four walks over five innings in a no-decision against the Detroit Tigers Monday, June 13.

Fantasy Tip: Shields has been atrocious since coming over from the San Diego Padres, but he actually settled down after allowing six runs in the first two frames to save the bullpen somewhat. Still, he cannot be trusted in all but the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues until he starts to pitch more consistently.

White Sox | James Shields roughed up in debut

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 23:22:12 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP James Shields was pounded for seven earned runs, eight hits and two walks while recording just six outs in his team debut Wednesday, June 8, against the Washington Nationals. He needed 84 pitches to make it through two innings, throwing just 44 for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Big Game James certainly didn't endear himself to his new teammates and fans, serving up three home runs. He'll look to get on track in his next scheduled start against the Detroit Tigers Monday. He'll be a two-start pitcher for fantasy owners in weekly formats, so he isn't a bad start despite the poor results in this one.

Padres | Luis Perdomo rocked Sunday

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 05:32:16 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Luis Perdomo allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, struck out three and walked one, in a 10-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, June 5. Perdomo was an emergency replacement for SP James Shields, who was dealt to the Chicago White Sox the day before.

Fantasy Tip: Perdomo may be headed back to the minors here soon, as manager Andy Green told the media "in an ideal world, he's learning in Class AA right now." Or maybe the Padres give him a big-league education, who knows? Either way, he's not ready for prime time and certainly not ready for your fantasy lineup.

White Sox | James Shields deal includes cash

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 14:29:01 -0700

Updating earlier reports, San Diego Padres SP James Shields is part of a deal agreed upon with the Chicago White Sox, and it includes nearly $30 million coming to Chicago. The White Sox will pay $27 million, and the Padres will pay $29 million through the life of Shields' deal, which ends after the 2018 season. He has a 2019 option for $16 million with a $2 million buyout.

Fantasy Tip: Shields' stuff just didn't hold up in the National League for some reason. He moves from a pitcher's dream of a ballpark to a hitter's park, but he's playing on a much better team. You'll sacrifice some ERA for win potential. His 7.62 K/9 is right on par with his career mark, and he's a solid SP3.

Padres | Erik Johnson headed to Padres

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 14:00:39 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson and SS Fernando Tatis Jr. are among the players being sent to the San Diego Padres for SP James Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is 2-1 with a 2.94 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and 35 K's in 49 innings at Class AAA Charlotte. Johnson was a second-round pick in 2011, and he's a solid prospect. The K's are down a tick this year after he fanned 136 in 132 2/3 innings at Charlotte last year. Johnson moves to one of the best pitcher's parks in the majors and is a worthwhile pickup in NL-only leagues. Tatis is really young and has a ways to go before he's a factor in fantasy.

White Sox | James Shields-to-White Sox nearly done

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 13:23:56 -0700

Updating a previous story, San Diego Padres SP James Shields is set to be traded to the Chicago White Sox, as the teams have agreed on the principles of a deal, with only "details to go", according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Among other things, the "details" figure to be how much of Shields' remaining salary the Padres are willing to absorb, which will ultimately affect the quality of prospects they will get in return from Chicago. Expect more information shortly, but it sounds as if this trade could happen fairly quickly. A move from PETCO Park to U.S. Cellular Field figures to hurt Shields' ERA, but he figures to be on the winning side of the ledger much more often in Chicago.

White Sox | James Shields headed to White Sox?

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 12:24:21 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields could be traded to the Chicago White Sox before his next scheduled start on Sunday, June 5. According to a source, the Padres and White Sox are in "advanced stages" of a deal. There is speculation that San Diego could receive minor-league SS Fernando Tatis Jr., the son of former major leaguer Fernando Tatis, along with other prospect in return for Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Shields saw his ERA skyrocket from 3.06 to 4.28 after giving up 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings in Tuesday's loss at Seattle, which led to Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler publicly calling out his 34-year-old pitcher. The one-time All-Star has topped 200 innings in every season since 2007 and would slot in nicely between southpaws Chris Sale and Jose Quintana. If this trade goes down as expected, owners should expect a nice boost in wins from Shields with a sub-4.00 ERA the rest of the way, making him a solid third fantasy starting pitcher.

Red Sox | Boston has interest in James Shields

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 04:57:31 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields has received trade interest from the Boston Red Sox, but the Red Sox are seeing how SP Eduardo Rodriguez performs before possibly pulling the trigger on a deal.

Fantasy Tip: Shields is attracting attention from a lot of teams, and the Red Sox would make sense considering Shields has an American League background with the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals. With a better-hitting lineup Shields' fantasy value could improve.
