Tampa Bay Rays Cs Ryan Hanigan and Jose Molina might end up with an even split of playing time this season, as both catchers are great defensively but are question marks with the bat.

Fantasy Tip: Neither catcher is very intriguing as a backup catcher in an AL-only league, but Hanigan probably has slightly more upside with the stick. However, if playing time is split evenly, neither is probably worth a selection.

The Washington Nationals may be interested in Tampa Bay Rays C Jose Lobaton as a backup catcher to C Wilson Ramos. The Rays are trying to shed Lobaton's $950,000 salary, but they also do not need a third catcher because of the presence of C Ryan Hanigan and C Jose Molina.

The Cincinnati Reds traded C Ryan Hanigan to the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for P David Holmberg in a three-team deal that also included the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Devin Mesoraco will have the opportunity to become a front-line catcher for us," general manager Walt Jocketty said. "Holmberg provides us with the quality pitching depth that every team needs."

The Tampa Bay Rays signed C Ryan Hanigan (Reds) to a three-year deal Tuesday, Dec. 3. He'll make $2.75 million in 2014, $3.5 million in 2015 and $3.7 million in 2016, and he has a $3.75 million option with an $800,000 buyout for the 2017 season. Hanigan was involved in a three-team deal that also involved the Arizona Diamondbacks.
