Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan making progress

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 20:52:24 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Ryan Hanigan (neck) is scheduled to catch a full game Wednesday, June 29, with Class AAA Pawtucket. He will have his status evaluated after the game.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan is making progress, and he could be back in Beantown sometime soon. Still, when healthy he is only worth a look as a No. 2 receiver in most deeper AL-only fantasy formats and as a salary saver in DFS leagues.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez in danger?

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 04:45:30 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez could be in danger of losing his roster spot with C Ryan Hanigan (neck) nearing a return and C Sandy Leon swinging a bat well.

Fantasy Tip: The Red Sox have a glut at catcher when you also factor in Blake Swihart, although Swihart is getting more outfield work to make up for that. You may want to see which direction Boston goes at catcher before putting down a player for a daily or regular roster spot. Right now the situation is too fluid.

Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan close to rehab stint

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 13:37:03 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Ryan Hanigan (neck) is expected to begin a rehab assignment later this week.

Fantasy Tip: With a .186/.250/.229 slash line, Hanigan is nothing more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only setups, but his return will likely push Sandy Leon back to the minors.

Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan placed on disabled list

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 09:12:12 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have placed C Ryan Hanigan (neck) on the 15-day disabled list because of a neck strain.

Fantasy Tip: The 35-year-old Hanigan is batting just .186 with 10 RBI through 70 at-bats this season. Christian Vazquez should see regular playing time behind the plate while Hanigan is sidelined and he's worth owning in AL-only and two-catcher leagues. Sandy Leon was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket to serve as Vazquez's backup but he possesses little fantasy value.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart, Ryan Hanigan out

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 08:38:55 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Blake Swihart (ankle) and C Ryan Hanigan (neck) are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada Sunday, June 5. OF Chris Young will bat eighth and play left field, while C Christian Vazquez starts behind the plate and bats ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Young and Vazquez are likely to see regular playing time for the next few weeks, since Swihart and Hanigan have been placed on the disabled list. They're worthy of consideration as roster depth for fantasy teams in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan catching Saturday

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 10:07:54 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman Saturday, June 4. C Ryan Hanigan will start behind the plate and bat ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan is hitting .194 with three doubles and 10 RBI through 67 at-bats this year but is 5-for-16 (.313) while batting ninth, so daily fantasy players looking for an inexpensive catching option should consider him for their lineup.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez, Christian Vazquez out

Mon, 30 May 2016 08:43:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez and C Christian Vazquez are not in the starting lineup against Baltimore Orioles SP Tyler Wilson Monday, May 30. 3B Travis Shaw will start at third base, while INF Marco Hernandez will start at third base and is batting ninth. C Ryan Hanigan will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is hitting .222 in limited playing time this month and is not a strong fantasy option for owners. Hanigan has struggled at the plate this season and should be avoided in most daily fantasy leagues.

Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan could play Friday

Thu, 26 May 2016 19:32:02 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said C Ryan Hanigan (illness, neck) should be available to play Friday, May 27, after leaving the game Wednesday, May 25, due to an illness and stiffness in his neck.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan is just batting .193 with eight RBI through 57 at-bats in 2016. He has little value outside of AL-only and two-catcher fantasy leagues.

Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan leaves game

Wed, 25 May 2016 18:52:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Ryan Hanigan (illness) left the game early Wednesday, May 25, because of an illness.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan probably will not miss much time since it is an illness. He will continue to receive a few starts a week but is not a strong starting candidate in most leagues.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart not in catching rotation

Fri, 20 May 2016 16:26:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is taking over in left field for the Red Sox despite just 11 games of experience at Class AAA Pawtucket. He will not be involved in catching duties. Cs Christian Vazquez and Ryan Hanigan will continue to split the catching work. Swihart still sees himself as a catcher in the long run, though. Swihart has made progress on defense, but he needs to work on his pitch-calling before he's ready to get behind the plate again. Boston has been encouraged with how Swihart has transitioned to left field. He'll form a platoon there with OF Chris Young, with Young playing against left-handers.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart's bat has always been better than his glove, and he hit .274 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 84 games as a rookie in 2015. If he continues to hit and fields his position in the outfield, he could stick long term in left in the strong side of a platoon. Gaining outfield eligibility makes him more attractive as a grab off the waiver wire in deep mixed and AL-only formats.
