The Baltimore Orioles acquired 2B Jemile Weeks from the Oakland Athletics Monday, Dec. 2, for RP Jim Johnson, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: The fact that the O's traded their closer for Weeks speaks volumes about how they view him. Jonathan Schoop and Ryan Flaherty are his main competitors at the keystone, and Weeks, although a disappointment to this point in his career, still has major league talent. Don't forget about him come draft day as a late-round flier in deeper leagues.

The Oakland Athletics acquired RP Jim Johnson from the Baltimore Orioles Monday, Dec. 2, for 2B Jemile Weeks, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson has posted 101 saves over the past two years, but he also blew nine saves in 2013. He is a top-notch fantasy closer, and he'll be pitching for another contender, so he'll be a Top 10 fantasy option again in 2014.

The Baltimore Orioles are trying hard to trade RP Jim Johnson. Johnson is expected to receive more than $10 million in arbitration this offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers are believed to be interested in Johnson.

The Baltimore Orioles have listened to offers for CL Jim Johnson but no firm talks of a deal with any team have been disclosed. Should Johnson be dealt, RPs Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day have been discussed as replacements, but the team values O'Day as more of a setup specialist.

MASN.com sports columnist Steve Melewski believes the Baltimore Orioles would not cut CL Jim Johnson from the roster by non-tendering him later this week. Even though Johnson is owed a $10.8 million projected salary if tendered, Melewski speculates Johnson is a calming clubhouse presence and has the full trust of manager Buck Showalter.
Fantasy Tip: Although Johnson did regress a bit this season, the Orioles' relief corps would be in disarray if Johnson were to be non-tendered. Another club would likely snap him up that needed relief help. Johnson remains a solid relief option heading into 2014.

The Baltimore Orioles plan on tendering RP Jim Johnson a contract in the offseason to keep him around as their closer.

Baltimore Orioles RP Tommy Hunter, not RP Jim Johnson, recorded the save over the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, Aug. 21, recording the final out of the inning after following RPs Darren O'Day and Brian Matusz. Manager Buck Showalter indicated that he was trying to stay away from Johnson, who had warmed up two or three days in a row and pitched Tuesday, Aug. 20. "Oh, sure, you can read it," Showalter said. "We've got 30-something games. We're going to put our best foot forward every night. Jimmy's our best option, one of them. I'm glad we've got more than one good option. We've got a lot of good options and we'll continue to make use of them."
Fantasy Tip: Hunter deserves to be added if you're looking for saves. Johnson is probably still Showalter's preference in the ninth for the long term, though. Francisco Rodriguez (groin) is battling a nagging injury and could also vulture a few saves while Johnson is vulnerable right now.

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (back) is returning to the lineup Monday, Aug. 19, and RP Francisco Rodriguez (groin) is available to pitch out of the bullpen.
Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez could be in line for a save chance today if Buck Showalter wants to give Jim Johnson a break after his recent struggles. Save chasers should add Rodriguez if he's available.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't say that RP Jim Johnson would be demoted from the closer's role after blowing three straight saves, but he mentioned that they have other options around him. It looks as though the team will go with a closer-by-committee in the ninth inning based on matchups, at least until Johnson can get back on track.
Fantasy Tip: It would not be surprising to see Showalter give Johnson a bit of a break. Francisco Rodriguez is the best bet to see save opportunities in the near future. Johnson shouldn't be dropped, but it might take him some time before he's back in the ninth full time.

Baltimore Orioles RP Jim Johnson will remain the club's closer, said manager Buck Showalter on Thursday, Aug. 15. The manager was asked if RP Francisco Rodriguez could get an opportunity to pitch in the ninth inning, and he responded, "I don't foresee that."
Fantasy Tip: The O's have dealt with Johnson's failures on and off all season, so at some point they have to consider a change. It's not clear if K-Rod wouldn't get a chance just because Showalter may favor others or because he's loyal to Johnson. The likelihood is the latter, but Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day would have to receive consideration as well in the event of a demotion of Johnson.
