When Oakland Athletics SP Drew Pomeranz returns from the disabled list, RP Jim Johnson may be traded. Johnson was nearly dealt to the Miami Marlins recently and the club has indicated it might eat most of his remaining $4.2 million salary.

The Oakland Athletics were close to trading RP Jim Johnson and cash to the Miami Marlins for the 39th overall pick in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft and another player, but the Marlins decided to make another trade. The team is not looking to trade Johnson at this time, according to a source.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said RP Jim Johnson is the "wild card" in the bullpen now with RP Sean Doolittle in the closer's role. Johnson will be used in a variety of roles.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson can be dropped in shallow mixed leagues right now as long as Doolittle is the man in the ninth. That could change quickly, though.

Oakland Athletics RP Jim Johnson has allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings over his last six appearances.
Fantasy Tip: It's possible he'll get one more shot at the closer job, but it may be a little while for it to come, barring injury.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin has named RP Sean Doolittle the team's closer.
Fantasy Tip: Doolittle was already receiving most of the save chances, but this makes Jim Johnson expendable once again. Pick up Doolittle if he's still out there.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said RP Sean Doolittle was set to pitch the ninth inning Wednesday, May 14, if the team still had the lead.
Fantasy Tip: Jim Johnson isn't ready to take over the ninth-inning duties by himself yet, according to Melvin, so Doolittle, and maybe Luke Gregerson, will mix and match again in a committee approach. Doolittle should be reacquired in all leagues.

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle hadn't allowed a run in his last seven outings, and he had 13 strikeouts in that span over 8 1/3 innings entering the game Tuesday, May 13. "He certainly has the stuff to do it," manager Bob Melvin said of Doolittle as potential closer, "but he's so good coming in with guys on base." Doolittle recorded his second save after RP Fernando Abad walked a hitter in the ninth Monday, May 12. Melvin said it appears the team has gone back to a closer-by-committee situation after trying to get RP Jim Johnson back in the closer role. Melvin said that Johnson just isn't there yet.
Fantasy Tip: Doolittle was likely dropped by his previous owners in most leagues. If you have the room and could use some potential save chances, to go along with nice peripherals, grab him now.

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out two for his second save Monday, May 12.
Fantasy Tip: RPs Fernando Abad and Jim Johnson were ineffective when they opened the ninth inning. They combined for two runs on two hits and a walk without retiring a batter. Doolittle appears to have the clear path to save chances.
