Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said the front office isn't giving up on the 2014 season just yet, and the next couple of weeks will be crucial in what the team decides to do at the trading deadline. "We're going to do whatever we feel gives the Red Sox the best chance to be as good as possible as quickly as possible," he said. "And we are not conceding 2014 with that statement." Boston is currently 43-52 and 9 1/2 games back in the American League East. They rank last in the league in runs, slugging percentage and total bases and are hitting .246 as a team.

General manager Ben Cherington said Monday, Dec. 9, that the leading candidate was from within the organization, and that is believed to be Double-A skipper Kevin Boles. Many prospects at Pawtucket will be players Boles has already worked with.

The Boston Red Sox are not thinking about locking up 21-year-old SS/3B Xander Bogaerts to a long-term contract, general manager Ben Cherington confirmed earlier this month. Cherington would like to see Bogaerts' development through the 2014 season before opening up the checkbook. Bogaerts is not eligible for arbitration until 2017 and free agency until 2020.
