Lions | Jim Caldwell talks two-point attempts

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 14:14:02 -0700

Detroit Lions head Jim Caldwell was noncommittal on his approach to two-point conversions this upcoming season. Caldwell said going for two points or not will depend on the situation. In Caldwell's two years as head coach, the Lions converted zero of their three two-point attempts last year and one of three tries the year before.

Fantasy Tip: Don't expect to see a ton of two-point tries by the Lions this year. They only had three such tries last year even after the rule change. It shouldn't have much impact on the fantasy value of guys like Matthew Stafford and Golden Tate.

Lions | Dan Orlovsky's job safe?

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 04:55:41 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky may have a lock on the No. 2 job despite the presence of QB Jake Rudock on the roster. Lions coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter were singing Orlovsky's praises after OTAs ended last week.

Fantasy Tip: The thinking is Rudock may need some seasoning despite his raw talent, so Orlovsky may have the proven track record. The Lions may go with three QB's in 2016. If you own Matthew Stafford on your roster, it's always wise to stash the backup away as a "handcuff" selection, so keep an eye on how this shakes out.

Lions | T.J. Jones on the verge of a breakout?

Sat, 28 May 2016 12:38:29 -0700

Detroit Lions WR T.J. Jones was "one of the obvious stars" in a recent organized team activity on Thursday, May 26, and has earned praised from head coach Jim Caldwell and QB Matthew Stafford for his offseason work.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Marvin Jones will absorb a good chunk of the 150 targets left behind by Calvin Johnson, there is going to be room for a player like T.J. Jones to make some noise for Detroit post-Megatron. The Lions also added Jeremy Kerley as a free agent, but he is primarily a slot receiver - a spot Golden Tate usually occupies in three-wide sets. As such, T.J. Jones is a name owners in all leagues should keep on their watch lists this season.

Lions | Ameer Abdullah primed to improve

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 13:27:17 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah battled through ball-security issues and an ineffective offensive line as a rookie, but head coach Jim Caldwell believes "if there's anybody that is going to improve (this year), he's going to improve".

Fantasy Tip: Abdullah's fumbling problem dates back to his college days, although that became less of a problem as the season progressed. Most of his ineffectiveness - at least early on - can be blamed on what was quite likely the worst run-blocking offensive line in the league. Owners should consider him a high-upside flex for now, at least until Detroit puts a premium on upgrading the front five.

Lions | Jim Caldwell retained

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 06:06:39 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell was retained as head coach for the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: The Lions have some pieces on offense, and Matthew Stafford turned into a QB1 with Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator. They have some holes to fill, but Stafford's fantasy stock is back off life support and in the mid-to-low QB1 range.

Lions | Jim Caldwell likely to return in 2016

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 07:55:30 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has the support of ownership and they plan to retain him for the 2016 season, according to multiple sources. However, it is possible that their yet-to-be-hired general manager will make the final decision regarding his fate.

Fantasy Tip: The Lions' offense has shown improvement since Jim Bob Cooter was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator in late October and WR Calvin Johnson has supported the return of Caldwell in recent days, so the odds of him returning for a third season in Detroit appear better than 50-50.

Lions | Jim Caldwell has a backer

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 15:03:20 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson said he wants to see head coach Jim Caldwell return for the 2016 season. "I love him. Everybody in the locker room would probably say the same thing. He commands respect, but he doesn't have to do much, it's just his character guys gravitate towards. Easily, one of my favorite coaches. I've had a couple good ones and one of my favorites."

Fantasy Tip: The Lions have turned things around in the second half of the season after an atrocious start. That alone should buy Caldwell another season, especially since the offense showed improvement with the change to offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Lions | Detroit offensive personnel fired

Mon, 26 Oct 2015 13:46:22 -0700

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn and assistant offensive line coach Terry Heffernan were let go Monday, Oct. 26, according to sources. Quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter will take over as the new offensive coordinator. Look for Cooter, and assistant in Indianapolis with head coach Jim Caldwell, and an offensive assistant in Denver in 2013 when Peyton Manning posted huge numbers, to use short to intermediate routes to help QB Matthew Stafford get rid of the ball quicker. The Lions must also protect their quarterback better.

Fantasy Tip: The usually potent Detroit offense has been relatively stagnant so far this year, especially the running game. Whether these changes make a difference remains to be seen, but it couldn't have been much worse than it has been for the Lions. Things won't change overnight, especially if the protection isn't better and the running game doesn't vastly improve, but if they make the right adjustments for Stafford they could be slightly more efficient in the pass game. Just don't expect much downfield just yet.

Lions | Play caller won't change for Lions

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 15:17:10 -0700

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi will remain the play caller on offense despite the Lions' recent struggles, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. "It's not an easy fix," Caldwell said. "It takes work and I think we're on the right track. I just think that we obviously, we're just kind of missing a little bit here or there which is kind of enough to slow us down." Caldwell also said that he believes the issue lies in execution.

Fantasy Tip: There have been big plays here and there for the Lions, as Caldwell indicated, but their ability to spread the field with deep plays has been lacking. Again, Detroit's offensive starters are risky plays on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 11:34:56 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell attempted to go for a first down on fourth down in 2014 14 times in 107 qualifying fourth-down situations, according to Football Outsiders' Aggressiveness Index. Caldwell went for it 13.1% of the time, which was tops among NFL coaches last season.

Updating a previous item, Detroit Lions OL Larry Warford (knee) will have more tests on his injured knee Monday, Nov. 10. A source indicated Warford did not tear an ACL, but Lions coach Jim Caldwell deferred any speculation. "Not real certain how long Warford will be out," Caldwell said. "We'll see. They'll evaluate him tomorrow when they get a real good look at it and we'll see what happens."

Mon, 27 Oct 2014 01:05:07 -0700

Detroit Lions DT Nick Fairley (knee) suffered a knee injury during the team's 22-21 win over the Atlanta Falcons, and coach Jim Caldwell is not optimistic about his status. "I'm not quite certain where he is right now," Caldwell said after the game. "But obviously, when you're carried off the field, it's not the greatest news. We'll see what the doctors say about him." Caldwell did not speculate if he thought the injury could be season-ending.

Lions | Tahir Whitehead's stock rising

Sun, 24 Aug 2014 01:42:59 -0700

Detroit Lions LB Tahir Whitehead had 10 tackles and three sacks during his team's exhibition game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. "He was really playing at a level of one of the top three linebackers, and so we put him in position to kind of see what we can do," coach Jim Caldwell said of Whitehead. "And obviously he took advantage of it."

Fantasy Tip: Whitehead could be a player to watch if Kyle Van Noy's abdominal issues keep him sidelined for a while. The Jaguars are not the most dominant team to face, but three sacks is still impressive in any circle.

"I think Darryl was a great addition for us because not only does he bring some enthusiasm and love the game, but he's a professional and a consummate professional," head coach Jim Caldwell said. "I mean, he does everything right. He listens, he reinforces what he's being taught, he knows and understands. He's been with Jim (Washburn) before, so he knows him and knows the scheme. He has a real good feel for things."

Lions | Keeping two QBs a possibility?

Mon, 30 Jun 2014 18:35:31 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell opened the season with three quarterbacks just four times in his 10 years with the Indianapolis Colts. In his two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, the team kept just two QBs.

Fantasy Tip: Caldwell has hinted that he could be leaning towards keeping three QBs this year, but history suggests he could opt for just two. If he ends up keeping just two QBs, third-stringer Kellen Moore could be the odd man out.

Lions | Theo Riddick has eye of coaching staff

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 23:26:28 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick had a strong offseason and caught the eye of new head coach Jim Caldwell and his staff, leading to speculation he could have a larger role in the offense.

Fantasy Tip: While Riddick is still behind Reggie Bush on the depth chart, keep in mind only a few people in Detroit knew who Joique Bell was because he played at hometown Wayne State University. People know who Bell is now, so if Riddick gets a chance to shine he could succeed. This is worth monitoring for handcuff purposes.

Thu, 10 Apr 2014 11:00:02 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions teammates and coaches were not surprised that DT Ndamukong Suh was not taking part in voluntary workouts. "It certainly didn't blindside me," head coach Jim Caldwell said. "We certainly knew. He and I have probably had more discussions than any player that we've had on the team. He's been in-and-out. I think he was here on a couple days when I came on a visit, so we kind of knew exactly what was going on.

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he still sees "a place for the wide nine in our system," and new Lions coach Jim Caldwell said it's "necessary" to use the defensive alignment, which requires defensive ends to set up outside the tight end in order to get better angles in the pass rush. "If you've taken a look at us, when we were in Indy, did you see (Dwight) Freeney and (Robert) Mathis?" said Caldwell, the Indianapolis Colts' head coach in 2009-11. "What'd they line up in? There we go."

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said WR Jacoby Jones is in great shape to have an expanded role in the offense. "He can catch and he can run," Caldwell said.

Fantasy Tip: This could be good news for Jones, especially in PPR leagues. Jones caught the ball 30 times in 2012, and if he can build on that in 2013, his fantasy value will rise. Monitor how he is used in training camp and through the preseason.
