49ers | Vernon Davis will return to SF

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 17:09:49 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis will return to the team next season, according to general manager Trent Baalke. Davis will make $4.95 million in the final year of his deal, but he's coming off a season in which he had just 26 catches for a measly 245 yards and two touchdowns (both in the season opener). Davis is expected to take part in the team's offseason program after skipping the mandatory minicamp last offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Davis' exceptionally poor 2014 screwed all of his owners over royally. Expect his price to drop significantly in 2015 drafts. That means he could be a bargain as a low-end TE1 or top-tier TE2. A bounce-back season seems like it'd be in store, especially if Colin Kaepernick improves in the pocket.

49ers | Tony Sparano good news for Vernon Davis?

Thu, 22 Jan 2015 19:09:44 -0800

San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Tony Sparano tutored Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten in his first two years in the NFL, and ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez believes TE Vernon Davis could benefit from having Sparano as a position coach.

Fantasy Tip: Davis was basically a non-factor for the 49ers last season, but after piling up 850 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2013, he could be worth taking a chance on later in drafts next year in case Sparano can help Davis bounce back.

49ers | SF tight end production was awful

Thu, 22 Jan 2015 15:18:51 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis had just two touchdowns in 2014, and they both came in Week 1. He also wasn't targeted at all in the red zone after the opening weekend of the regular season after catching 13 TDs in 2013. The Niners and Davis hope that the hiring of Tony Sparano as the new tight ends coach can fix that heading into 2015. San Fran tight ends combined for just 39 catches for 423 yards (10.9 yards per catch) in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe to say that Davis will find it difficult to be any worse next year than he was in 2014. Granted, poor QB play from Colin Kaepernick and injuries played there part, but Sparano should be a welcomed addition to the staff. However, for next year's fantasy football drafts, it's probably safe to say that Davis is now more of a fringe TE1.

49ers | Vernon Davis' spot may be in jeopardy

Fri, 09 Jan 2015 11:59:39 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis' roster spot for 2015 could be in jeopardy, because he is scheduled to make $4.95 million next season.

Fantasy Tip: Davis recorded only 245 yards and two touchdowns this season after having 850 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2013. Davis could see a small increase in value if he joins another team but probably will be a low-end No. 1 tight end no matter where he plays in 2015.

49ers | Vernon Davis a non-factor in red zone

Thu, 11 Dec 2014 18:13:55 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has not been targeted in the red zone since Week 1 of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Davis has seen his production plummet across the board this year, and his lack of involvement in the red zone means that fantasy owners can't even hope for a touchdown to salvage a decent point total. At this point, Davis shouldn't be used at FantasyScore regardless of the opponent.

49ers | Vernon Davis wants to be involved

Thu, 11 Dec 2014 13:05:16 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has been frustrated with his role in the team's offense this year. "For me, it's all about coming here, showing up and doing what I have to do to contribute," Davis said. "As far as not getting the ball, (I) leave it up to the offensive coordinator. It's his call." Davis is only averaging 4.1 targets per game after averaging 5.5 targets per game last season. He's also dropped 6 of 31 catchable passes this year, and his 19.4 percent drop rate is the second highest among tight ends in the league, according to Pro Football Focus. Davis' blocking skills have also declined.

Fantasy Tip: The bottom line is that Davis ($5,000) shouldn't be in FantasyScore lineups because of his limited role in the offense and the fact that SF's offense has been struggling as a whole for much of the year. Look elsewhere for your tight end.

49ers | Vernon Davis quiet again

Mon, 24 Nov 2014 10:38:45 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis had three catches for just 21 yards in the team's Week 12 win over the Washington Redskins, and that came after he had two catches or less in four straight games. Davis stopped his routes too soon on two of his catches and also dropped what would have been a 20-yard pass. Davis has played in six straight games after missing two games earlier this year with injuries.

Fantasy Tip: Davis is simply too inconsistent to be relied on at FantasyScore, even though the Seattle Seahawks, the Niners' Week 13 matchup, have been vulnerable to tight ends throughout the season.

49ers | Vernon Davis probable for Week 7

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 15:18:16 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis (back) practiced in full Friday, Oct. 17, and is probable for Week 7 against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Davis returned last week to post three catches (six targets) for 30 yards. Davis' fantasy value is heavily reliant on touchdowns, making him a boom or bust pick each week. The Broncos remain somewhat vulnerable to opposing tight ends, though, making Davis ($6,300) a decent FantasyScore pick this week.
