Bears | Jay Cutler heads to IR

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 15:25:59 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Barkley has actually been decent in Cutler's absence, but he's not reliable enough to start in traditional fantasy leagues. He's merely a cheap option in daily formats if the matchup is favorable.

Bears | Jay Cutler will be placed on IR

Thu, 01 Dec 2016 11:42:55 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery Saturday, Dec. 3, to repair his labrum injury and will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Barkley will serve as the starting quarterback for the rest of the season unless he suffers an injury. He posted some decent numbers in Week 12 but probably should not be a starting option in most fantasy leagues.

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler was not able to play in Week 12 and probably will miss another game if he does not practice this week. Matt Barkley would receive another start if Cutler is ruled out but can be avoided in most leagues.

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 07:08:29 -0800

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) has been declared out for Week 12's game against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler did not practice at all this week and had been listed as doubtful on the injury report. Matt Barkley will start under center for Chicago but is not a viable fantasy option.

Bears | Jay Cutler not ruled out

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 11:46:30 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 23, but head coach John Fox has not ruled Cutler out for Week 12. Fox said Cutler's injury is not season-ending and that Cutler is considered day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler probably will not be able to play this week, but owners can check on his status later in the week. Matt Barkley would start if Cutler is ruled out but should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler believed to have torn labrum

Tue, 22 Nov 2016 09:00:44 -0800

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is believed to have a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He's receiving a second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: It's unlikely he'll see the field again this season, and honestly, the team may just hold him out because he's not the future for them. Matt Barkley is expected to take over, but he has very little around him and isn't a good fantasy pickup.

Bears | Jay Cutler may be out for season

Mon, 21 Nov 2016 14:15:50 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) suffered a shoulder injury in Week 11 and the Bears are deciding if the injury will end Cutler's season. QB Matt Barkley would start in Week 12 if Cutler is ruled out.

Fantasy Tip: All is not well in the land of Chicago as the injuries and suspensions pile up. The Tennessee Titans would make for a sneaky fantasy defense if Barkley starts next week. Cutler was not a viable starting fantasy quarterback anyway even if he is done for the season. Do not pick up Matt Barkley.

Bears | Jay Cutler silenced in second half

Sun, 20 Nov 2016 14:32:58 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler threw for 252 yards on 17-of-30 passing on Sunday, Nov. 20, in a 22-16 loss to the New York Giants. Cutler threw one touchdown, but the Bears did not score in the second half.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has been up and down in terms of efficiency, and this was not one of his better games. Your best bet is to look for another starter should you need one.

Bears | Jay Cutler will keep starting job

Mon, 14 Nov 2016 12:46:22 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will remain the starting quarterback, according to head coach John Fox.

Fantasy Tip: With only Matt Barkley in reserve, Fox doesn't have much choice. Cutler will move ahead without top wideout Alshon Jeffery, who was just suspended four games by the league earlier in the day after getting busted for PEDs. Zach Miller, Eddie Royal and Cameron Meredith will likely serve as his top targets moving forward. Cutler can be avoided in all but two-quarterback leagues for the rest of the season.

Bears | Jay Cutler struggles in loss

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 14:11:34 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler fumbled twice and threw two interceptions Sunday, Nov. 13, in a 36-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: This was not what the Bears wanted to see from their No. 1 starter, but for better or worse they are wedded to him for the remainder of the season. Cutler's shaky qualities merit keeping him on your bench or as a QB to use during a bye week.

Bears | Jay Cutler returns with a win

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 21:30:47 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) returned to the lineup in Week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings Monday, Oct. 31, and he completed 20 of his 31 pass attempts for 252 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran once for two yards and was sacked once.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler fared pretty well considering he was up against a fierce Minnesota pass defense. He'll look to carry the momentum into Week 10 once the team returns from a bye.

Bears | Bigger role for Alshon Jeffery?

Fri, 28 Oct 2016 20:44:44 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said he expects to be on the same page as QB Jay Cutler against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, and Cutler said he wants to try to involve Jeffery in the offense more during the second half of the year.

Fantasy Tip: Jeffery's overall value should see a boost with Cutler back under center, but he is no more than a WR3 against a Minnesota secondary that has allowed just four passing touchdowns and the fewest passing yards.

Bears | Jay Cutler may have been done

Thu, 27 Oct 2016 08:42:48 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) could have been done as the starting quarterback if QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) weren't lost for the season because head coach John Fox allegedly told friends he was done with Cutler, according to two league sources. Cutler is in the final season of guaranteed money in his contract.

Fantasy Tip: That actually plays into Cutler's favor as the team is going nowhere, and he's in a pseudo contract year auditioning for other teams. He remains a matchup play in fantasy, but that matchup isn't good this week against the Minnesota Vikings.

Bears | Jay Cutler cleared to play

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 11:13:57 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is expected to make his return following a five-week absence in Week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer is expected to be out six weeks with a broken left arm and Matt Barkley hasn't exactly proven to be an adequate NFL quarterback, so the Bears have little choice but to turn back to Cutler. That's likely good news this week for Alshon Jeffery - the one player Cutler doesn't mind forcing the ball to - and the owners of the Vikings D/ST, who should be angry coming off their worst performance of the season.

Bears | Jay Cutler doubtful for Week 7

Wed, 19 Oct 2016 13:44:34 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 19, and is doubtful to play in Week 7 against the Green Bay Packers.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer will start once again and should be throwing plenty against a defense that is much worse against the pass than against the run. Hoyer has thrown for 300 yards in four straight games, too. He's a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2.

Bears | Jay Cutler sits again

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 12:41:59 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler can take his time as far as the Bears and fantasy owners are concerned. Brian Hoyer has excelled in Cutler's absence and has turned into an every-week starter consideration. Green Bay has been mediocre at best versus quarterbacks in 2016, so there's no reason to ditch Hoyer this week.

Bears | No practice for Jay Cutler

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 15:35:05 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not practice Monday, Oct. 17. The Bears did not practice; Cutler's status is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: The Bears aren't missing Cutler. Brian Hoyer has easily and exponentially outperformed the annually underperforming Cutler. Even when Cutler is ready to play, Hoyer may still start. Cutler can remain on fantasy benches.

Bears | Jay Cutler won't play Sunday

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 08:48:46 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) will not play in Week 6's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler was listed as doubtful on the injury report and did not practice this week. QB Brian Hoyer will once again serve as Chicago's starting quarterback and there is no guarantee Cutler will regain the No. 1 job when he is healthy enough to resume playing.

Bears | Chicago not addressing QB situation

Mon, 10 Oct 2016 10:06:00 -0700

Bears QB Brian Hoyer threw for over 300 yards for the third time in as many starts in a Week 5 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, but head coach John Fox refused to speculate on his quarterback's job status going forward because Jay Cutler (thumb) "is not healthy".

Fantasy Tip: Fox's desire to keep somewhat obvious injury and depth-chart information from the media is becoming almost legendary at this point. With that said, his continued lack of support for Cutler suggests he is leaning toward Hoyer. Whichever player comes away the starting gig will be no better than a matchup-based QB2 or bye-week option.

Bears | Jay Cutler doubtful for Week 5

Fri, 07 Oct 2016 11:18:31 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) has not practiced all week and is considered doubtful for Week 5 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer is set to make another start - one that could determine whether or not Cutler has a job waiting for him when he is able to return. The Colts rank in the middle of the pack in terms of allowing fantasy points to quarterbacks, so Hoyer is a worthy streamer from that perspective. Working against him is Kevin White going on IR this week and Eddie Royal entering the weekend as questionable.

Bears | Jay Cutler misses practice

Thu, 06 Oct 2016 11:49:17 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 6.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Brian Hoyer will receive another start with Cutler still dealing with his thumb injury. Hoyer has played well since taking over for Cutler and could be a decent starting option in daily fantasy leagues because of the favorable matchup.

Bears | Jay Cutler does not practice

Wed, 05 Oct 2016 16:05:17 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler's status for Week 5 is uncertain at this point, so owners should keep an eye on the situation. It is not known if he will earn his job back when he returns, so owners should avoid him.

Bears | Brian Hoyer has chance to remain starter

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 12:35:58 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer appears to have a realistic shot at remaining the team's starter even after Jay Cutler (thumb) returns, according to head coach John Fox.

Fantasy Tip: While it can be easily argued that Hoyer has outperformed Cutler to this point, the Bears are going to struggle to get respectable play from the quarterback position long-term until they address the position in the draft. Hoyer has shown the ability to produce in soft matchups like the one he saw in Week 4 versus the Detroit Lions, but he is otherwise best left on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler expected to miss another week

Fri, 30 Sep 2016 11:06:04 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) has yet to practice this week and is listed as doubtful for Week 4 against the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer will draw another start in a favorable matchup versus the Lions after finishing inside the top 12 fantasy quarterbacks last week. He is definitely a streamer option against a defense that has allowed four touchdown passes in two games already and 10 total.

Bears | Jay Cutler misses practice

Thu, 29 Sep 2016 11:38:06 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 29. Cutler was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 28, but head coach John Fox said Cutler did not suffer any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Cutler will miss at least one more week because of his thumb injury. Brian Hoyer probably will be the starting quarterback in Week 4 but is only a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues at this time.

Bears | Jay Cutler limited

Wed, 28 Sep 2016 12:27:48 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler's status for Week 4 is uncertain at this point, so owners will need to keep an eye on the situation. Cutler did not do much in the first two games of the season and probably should be avoided even if he plays this week.

Bears | Jay Cutler not guaranteed starting job

Tue, 27 Sep 2016 21:00:30 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is not guaranteed to be the starter whenever he's medically cleared to return, according to head coach John Fox. Cutler apparently pushed to start in Week 3 against the Dallas Cowboys but was not cleared. When asked about Cutler regaining the starting job upon returning, Fox said, "I don't think there are any givens."

Fantasy Tip: Although Brian Hoyer posted decent numbers in Cutler's stead, much of it came during garbage time as the Bears were down 21 at the half. Hoyer has proven competent in previous stops, but he clearly lacks Cutler's talent and couldn't be viewed as part of the team's future. Still, there are enough weapons in Chicago's passing game to give whoever is taking snaps some fantasy appeal.

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 16:26:18 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer is starting in the Week 3 game against the Dallas Cowboys in placed of the injured QB Jay Cutler (thumb).

Fantasy Tip: The good news for Hoyer is that Alshon Jeffery is healthy and available, but he is only a low-end QB2 at this point. Cutler should be reserved in all fantasy leagues until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 22.

Bears | Jay Cutler out 2-3 weeks

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 05:17:28 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is expected to miss two to three weeks, according to a source. His timeline depends on how he heals over the next three days.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer was 9-for-12 for 78 yards in relief of Cutler Monday night. Hoyer could be a cheap DFS flyer against the Dallas Cowboys, but he doesn't hold much weight in traditional leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler won't need surgery

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 11:16:06 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) will not need surgery on his sprained thumb, according to head coach John Fox.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler wasn't a starting fantasy quarterback anyway, and Brian Hoyer certainly won't be, assuming Cutler misses time. Alshon Jeffery and Jeremy Langford shouldn't lose much value, but they're really the only Bears who should be in starting lineups -- Jeffery as fringe WR1 and Langford as a low-end RB2 to high-end RB3.

Bears | Jay Cutler absence expected

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 07:53:57 -0700

Updating earlier reports, Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is expected to miss a period of time, and the Bears are preparing for his absence. The question that remains is whether Cutler has surgery to repair the injury.

Fantasy Tip: If Cutler is out for a period of time, Brian Hoyer isn't a bad fallback for the team. He went 9-for-12 for 78 yards in relief of Cutler Monday night. Hoyer would be a cheap DFS flyer for Week 3, but he doesn't hold much weight in traditional leagues.
