NFL | Jay Cutler not done?

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 10:18:12 -0700

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler's (Bears) agent, Bus Cook, said Cutler isn't retiring and hasn't mentioned retirement to him.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is little more than a fringe backup in fantasy at this juncture, but he could still get a chance to start and be worth a potential bye-week filler.

Bears | Jay Cutler expected to retire

Mon, 17 Apr 2017 13:53:13 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is likely to retire, according to ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson. Dickerson said he would be surprised if Cutler doesn't hang up his cleats.

Fantasy Tip: It would be a tough pill to swallow for Cutler after such a tumultuous tenure in Chicago, but retirement is probably in his best interest. Both sides can move on from their mutual failures and focus on the future. Even if Cutler does return, he's no longer fantasy relevant except for possibly serving as a bye-week replacement here and there.

Bears | Retirement still possible for Jay Cutler

Thu, 13 Apr 2017 18:14:38 -0700

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) is still contemplating retirement, according to a league source.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Cutler decides to return, his chances of being a valuable fantasy asset are almost nonexistent.

NFL | Jay Cutler 'rarely comes up' in talks

Thu, 06 Apr 2017 18:03:47 -0700

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler's (Bears) name "rarely, if ever, comes up" in conversations with general managers and head coaches talking about where free-agent quarterbacks are going to land, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. It appears that the market for Cutler is "almost zilch."

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Cutler may have to settle for a backup job out of the gate, though it's also possible he could wait for a situation to develop, such as an injury to a team's starting quarterback. Either way, it looks like the 11-year veteran will have no value to offer fantasy owners in 2017.

NFL | Jay Cutler to sit out?

Tue, 28 Mar 2017 08:45:20 -0700

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) has given NFL owners a strong belief that he's not going to play in 2017, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler would be a backup in fantasy regardless of where he lands.

Texans | Texans not interested in Jay Cutler

Tue, 21 Mar 2017 20:45:21 -0700

The Houston Texans "aren't an option" for free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears), according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. As a result, Cutler "may just wait."

Fantasy Tip: That's unfortunate for the 11-year veteran, as Houston houses one of the few starting quarterback vacancies around the league. Cutler should have no problem latching on somewhere eventually, but the longer his search goes, the more unlikely it is that he'll be any sort of valuable contributor to fantasy teams in 2017.

Jets | Jay Cutler was going to meet with NYJ

Mon, 20 Mar 2017 16:42:12 -0700

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) was scheduled to meet with the New York Jets this week, but the team decided to sign QB Josh McCown, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has not received a lot of interest this offseason and may need to wait until training camp to sign with a team. Owners in fantasy leagues can consider Cuter a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he is a starter for a team next season.

Jets | Jay Cutler in contact with Jets

Mon, 13 Mar 2017 07:16:56 -0700

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) has been in contact with the New York Jets, and a meeting could happen soon.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is injury and mistake prone, but he still has enough arm talent to be a serviceable backup in fantasy.

Jets | Jay Cutler 'not right' for New York Jets

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 08:35:45 -0800

Free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) is a poor fit for the New York Jets as they begin to rebuild their roster and improve the culture in the locker room, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets have already met with Cutler, but Cimini points out the team needs a quarterback who can absorb punishment, avoid interceptions, handle diversity and galvanize a young roster - none of which are particular strength for the 34-year Cutler. However, with few options left in free agency and no blue-chip passer in the next month's draft, Gang Green may not have a choice. If Cutler ends up signing with New York, he can obviously be avoided in fantasy.

Jets | New York eyeing two quarterbacks

Thu, 09 Mar 2017 11:20:39 -0800

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian and free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears) have both drawn interest from the New York Jets. The Jets would like to trade for Siemian, but Cutler would be another option if a Siemian trade does not come to fruition.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler to the Jets makes sense with his former offensive coordinator Jeremy Evans now residing there. Of course, if the Broncos acquire Romo then Siemian would also need a new home. The bottom line is that neither Cutler nor Siemian should be drafted as a QB1, but Siemian has more upside at this point in their respective careers.

Bears | Jay Cutler being let go

Thu, 09 Mar 2017 10:39:47 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is being released Thursday, March 9, according to sources. Cutler requested his release earlier today.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has been one of the biggest disappointments in real-life football and in fantasy football over the last several years. No matter where he ends up, he should not be drafted as a starting fantasy quarterback.

Jets | Jay Cutler a longshot for NYJ?

Sat, 25 Feb 2017 18:37:11 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler isn't likely to end up with the New York Jets, according to beat writer Rich Cimini.

Fantasy Tip: Even if he finds his way out of Chicago, Cutler should be able to land a starting gig in 2017. However, he isn't going to be more than a midrange QB2 no matter where he plays.

Bears | Jay Cutler has support

Fri, 24 Feb 2017 20:00:55 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler can still play at a high level, according to free-agent QB Josh McCown, and McCown said Cutler just needs to find the right situation for his skill set.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler could land a starting gig for a quarterback-needy team in 2017, but at this stage in his career, he is a QB2 with limited upside.

Bears | Jay Cutler considering retirement

Thu, 23 Feb 2017 05:49:23 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is still considering whether he wants to continue playing in 2017, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler turns 34 in April and has missed games in seven straight seasons. If he continues his career, it'll likely be with another team. He'll be a QB2 without a lot of upside.

Bears | Jay Cutler likely cleared in March

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 08:30:54 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) has been rehabbing and working out following shoulder surgery, and he's expected to receive medical clearance by March.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is aging and has been injury prone in his career. He'll likely don a new uniform next season, but he's a QB2 in fantasy without a lot of upside.

Jets | NYJ has some interest in Jay Cutler

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 06:46:21 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has drawn some interest from the New York Jets, who like his moxie and arm talent. Jets quarterback coach Jeremy Bates worked with Cutler in his younger days with the Denver Broncos, and he has always been a big believer in him.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is aging and coming off of major shoulder surgery. He has very little upside as a QB2.

Bears | Chicago seeking Jay Cutler trade

Tue, 21 Feb 2017 15:25:47 -0800

The Chicago Bears are actively seeking a trade for QB Jay Cutler, according to ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has undeniably been a disappointment for the Bears after being given a big contract. Cutler has dealt with plenty of injuries over the course of his tenure in Chicago, but even when he's been on the field he has not played well. Wherever Cutler plays, he shouldn't be starting on fantasy squads.

Cardinals | Jay Cutler not in the cards for Arizona

Tue, 21 Feb 2017 07:53:34 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is of no interest to the Arizona Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is aging and coming off of major shoulder surgery. His upside is pretty minimal as a QB2 wherever he lands.

Cardinals | Arizona may consider Jay Cutler

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 09:18:54 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is expected to be released this offseason, and the MMQB's Peter King "wouldn't be shocked" if he ends up with the Arizona Cardinals to serve as the backup for Carson Palmer.

Fantasy Tip: It would be very surprising for Cutler to accept a backup job with so many teams in need of a starter, although the fit in Arizona makes a lot of sense. Head coach Bruce Arians' offense loves to go downfield and Cutler still has one of the stronger arms in the league. From Cutler's perspective, he'd get a chance to resurrect his value somewhat by working with one of the better offensive minds in the league. Regardless of where he lands, Cutler will be nothing more than a middling QB2 in fantasy.

Jets | Jay Cutler unlikely to land with Jets

Thu, 09 Feb 2017 07:41:40 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is unlikely to land with the New York Jets, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is likely to be cut by the Bears, and he should be able to land a starting spot with another club. He's aging and had several injuries in recent years, which means he's a QB2 devoid of a lot of upside unless he lands in a perfect situation.

Jets | NYJ a landing spot for Jay Cutler?

Wed, 08 Feb 2017 19:48:55 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is a "possibility" to join the New York Jets if he is released as expected this offseason, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Confora.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets hired Cutler's former position coach Jeremy Bates as their quarterback coach Wednesday, so it appears La Confora is connecting the dots here. New York also employs Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall - a pair of Cutler's former teammates - so a reunion is possible. A change of scenery doesn't figure to improve Cutler's decision-making skills as a quarterback, so owners can continue to consider him an enigmatic QB2 for fantasy purposes going forward.

Bears | Bears moving on from Jay Cutler?

Thu, 02 Feb 2017 17:05:47 -0800

The Chicago Bears are "moving on" from QB Jay Cutler, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't be much of a surprise, as Cutler was brutal this season while being limited to just five games due to injury. Plus, Chicago is said to be very interested in acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo from New England. Regardless, Cutler's best days are well behind him anyway, and even if he does end up starting elsewhere in 2017, he shouldn't be a draft day target in just about all fantasy formats.

Bears | Jay Cutler ahead of schedule

Thu, 05 Jan 2017 08:30:05 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is rehabbing hard and is ahead of schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery, according to general manager Ryan Pace.

Fantasy Tip: He's likely to be wearing a new uniform at the age of 34 next season. He hasn't played a full year since 2009, and he'll have to prove he still has the same velocity after a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. He should still have a chance to land a starting gig next year, and he'll be a QB2 in fantasy.

Bears | Jay Cutler's future up in the air

Wed, 04 Jan 2017 20:57:36 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's future with the team "hasn't been completely finalized," according to general manager Ryan Pace, but Pace said Wednesday, Jan. 3, "everything is on the table" when it comes to the quarterback position.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler probably won't be back in Chicago, but if he happens to return or land a starting gig elsewhere, he can be a serviceable QB2.

Bears | Jay Cutler has surgery

Tue, 03 Jan 2017 05:30:03 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is recovering from shoulder surgery, which is why he wasn't available for the media at the end of the season, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has now missed at least one game in each of the last seven years. He'll be 34 next season, and he's likely going to have to find another team. Depending on how he recovers from the shoulder surgery, he should still have another shot to land a starting gig with another team. However, he's more of a QB2 in fantasy at this stage.

Bears | Jay Cutler heads to IR

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 15:25:59 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Barkley has actually been decent in Cutler's absence, but he's not reliable enough to start in traditional fantasy leagues. He's merely a cheap option in daily formats if the matchup is favorable.

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery Saturday, Dec. 3, to repair his labrum injury and will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Barkley will serve as the starting quarterback for the rest of the season unless he suffers an injury. He posted some decent numbers in Week 12 but probably should not be a starting option in most fantasy leagues.

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler was not able to play in Week 12 and probably will miss another game if he does not practice this week. Matt Barkley would receive another start if Cutler is ruled out but can be avoided in most leagues.

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 07:08:29 -0800

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) has been declared out for Week 12's game against the Tennessee Titans.

Bears | Jay Cutler not ruled out

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 11:46:30 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 23, but head coach John Fox has not ruled Cutler out for Week 12. Fox said Cutler's injury is not season-ending and that Cutler is considered day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler probably will not be able to play this week, but owners can check on his status later in the week. Matt Barkley would start if Cutler is ruled out but should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler believed to have torn labrum

Tue, 22 Nov 2016 09:00:44 -0800

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is believed to have a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He's receiving a second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: It's unlikely he'll see the field again this season, and honestly, the team may just hold him out because he's not the future for them. Matt Barkley is expected to take over, but he has very little around him and isn't a good fantasy pickup.

Bears | Jay Cutler may be out for season

Mon, 21 Nov 2016 14:15:50 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) suffered a shoulder injury in Week 11 and the Bears are deciding if the injury will end Cutler's season. QB Matt Barkley would start in Week 12 if Cutler is ruled out.

Fantasy Tip: All is not well in the land of Chicago as the injuries and suspensions pile up. The Tennessee Titans would make for a sneaky fantasy defense if Barkley starts next week. Cutler was not a viable starting fantasy quarterback anyway even if he is done for the season. Do not pick up Matt Barkley.

Bears | Jay Cutler silenced in second half

Sun, 20 Nov 2016 14:32:58 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler threw for 252 yards on 17-of-30 passing on Sunday, Nov. 20, in a 22-16 loss to the New York Giants. Cutler threw one touchdown, but the Bears did not score in the second half.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has been up and down in terms of efficiency, and this was not one of his better games. Your best bet is to look for another starter should you need one.

Bears | Jay Cutler will keep starting job

Mon, 14 Nov 2016 12:46:22 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will remain the starting quarterback, according to head coach John Fox.

Fantasy Tip: With only Matt Barkley in reserve, Fox doesn't have much choice. Cutler will move ahead without top wideout Alshon Jeffery, who was just suspended four games by the league earlier in the day after getting busted for PEDs. Zach Miller, Eddie Royal and Cameron Meredith will likely serve as his top targets moving forward. Cutler can be avoided in all but two-quarterback leagues for the rest of the season.

Bears | Jay Cutler struggles in loss

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 14:11:34 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler fumbled twice and threw two interceptions Sunday, Nov. 13, in a 36-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: This was not what the Bears wanted to see from their No. 1 starter, but for better or worse they are wedded to him for the remainder of the season. Cutler's shaky qualities merit keeping him on your bench or as a QB to use during a bye week.

Bears | Jay Cutler returns with a win

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 21:30:47 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) returned to the lineup in Week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings Monday, Oct. 31, and he completed 20 of his 31 pass attempts for 252 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran once for two yards and was sacked once.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler fared pretty well considering he was up against a fierce Minnesota pass defense. He'll look to carry the momentum into Week 10 once the team returns from a bye.

Bears | Bigger role for Alshon Jeffery?

Fri, 28 Oct 2016 20:44:44 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said he expects to be on the same page as QB Jay Cutler against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, and Cutler said he wants to try to involve Jeffery in the offense more during the second half of the year.

Fantasy Tip: Jeffery's overall value should see a boost with Cutler back under center, but he is no more than a WR3 against a Minnesota secondary that has allowed just four passing touchdowns and the fewest passing yards.

Bears | Jay Cutler may have been done

Thu, 27 Oct 2016 08:42:48 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) could have been done as the starting quarterback if QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) weren't lost for the season because head coach John Fox allegedly told friends he was done with Cutler, according to two league sources. Cutler is in the final season of guaranteed money in his contract.

Fantasy Tip: That actually plays into Cutler's favor as the team is going nowhere, and he's in a pseudo contract year auditioning for other teams. He remains a matchup play in fantasy, but that matchup isn't good this week against the Minnesota Vikings.

Bears | Jay Cutler cleared to play

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 11:13:57 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is expected to make his return following a five-week absence in Week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer is expected to be out six weeks with a broken left arm and Matt Barkley hasn't exactly proven to be an adequate NFL quarterback, so the Bears have little choice but to turn back to Cutler. That's likely good news this week for Alshon Jeffery - the one player Cutler doesn't mind forcing the ball to - and the owners of the Vikings D/ST, who should be angry coming off their worst performance of the season.

Bears | Jay Cutler doubtful for Week 7

Wed, 19 Oct 2016 13:44:34 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 19, and is doubtful to play in Week 7 against the Green Bay Packers.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer will start once again and should be throwing plenty against a defense that is much worse against the pass than against the run. Hoyer has thrown for 300 yards in four straight games, too. He's a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2.

Bears | Jay Cutler sits again

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 12:41:59 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (thumb) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler can take his time as far as the Bears and fantasy owners are concerned. Brian Hoyer has excelled in Cutler's absence and has turned into an every-week starter consideration. Green Bay has been mediocre at best versus quarterbacks in 2016, so there's no reason to ditch Hoyer this week.
