Bears | Jay Cutler solid in preseason game

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 18:38:26 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler completed eight of his nine pass attempts to five different receivers for 69 yards in a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts Saturday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler was efficient despite missing receivers Alshon Jeffrey and Kevin White. However, he is notoriously inconsistent, and he can't be trusted to deliver QB1 results on a weekly basis.

Bears | Former GM has harsh words for Jay Cutler

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 19:02:18 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler lacks poise, according to former general manager Jerry Angelo. "He's not comfortable reading defenses and consequently locks on to a favorite or predetermined target that may or may not be the right choice," Angelo said. "The less he's asked to see the better he is."

Fantasy Tip: At this stage in his career, it seems unlikely he will ever be more than the boom-or-bust players he has always been. You can't count on him as an every-week fantasy starter, but he will have a few big games during the season.

Bears | Jay Cutler runs hurry-up

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 19:07:37 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler operated out of a hurry-up offense during a majority of a preseason game against the Washington Redskins Thursday, Aug. 13, finishing 4-of-7 for 42 yards in two series.

Fantasy Tip: There tends to be no middle ground with Cutler, making him a high-risk, high-reward fantasy option. He will have value as a matchup play FantasyScore during the course of the year, but he is too inconsistent to trust as a starter in seasonal leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler improving?

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 14:34:00 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has shown better mechanics recently under new offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Gase said Cutler's ability to communicate with teammates has stood out and he's able to get wide receivers on the same page.

Fantasy Tip: The problem with Cutler has usually been consistency, but a new coaching staff is promising, and it sounds like Gase has been good for him so far. Still, one should approach drafting Cutler with caution. He shouldn't be viewed as a starting fantasy quarterback.

Bears | Jay Cutler remains perfect

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 17:16:47 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has yet to throw an interception in 7-on-7 or team drills through 11 practices. Cutler accredited offensive coordinator Adam Gase for the schemes. Cutler also laughed at a question about the significance of the feat, "Camp's camp," he said. "We're not getting hit. These aren't live bullets. So we'll see what happens when we start going."

Fantasy Tip: Cutler threw 18 interceptions in 15 games last season, matching the second-highest total of his career. Owners will be taking a tremendous risk with Cutler, regardless of his training camp success.

Bears | Quiet scrimmage for Jay Cutler

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 17:49:08 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler completed just one of his five pass attempts during a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 8.

Fantasy Tip: To be fair to Cutler, he was playing without receiver Alshon Jeffery and running back Matt Forte, but at the end of the day, Cutler is going to be the same high-risk, high-reward fantasy option that he has been throughout his career.

Bears | Jay Cutler impressing Adam Gase

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 16:09:32 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is "further ahead than everybody else" in terms of understanding the new offensive scheme in training camp, according to offensive coordinator Adam Gase. "Any quarterback I think is going to be happy with [Gase]," Cutler said. "He does a really good job putting you in the right position, keeping the defense off balance, mixing up the play calls and that makes it easier on the quarterback." The Bears want to take pressure off Cutler by balancing out the offense with the running game; Chicago ran the ball less than 40% in 2014. Gase also stressed the importance of moving Cutler outside the pocket, a place where he has excelled in his career.

Fantasy Tip: The positive talk between the new offensive coordinator and Cutler is all fine and dandy, but it doesn't mean a whole lot until games begin. Cutler has had fine coaching and coordinators before, but his turnover-prone ways continue to get in the way of separating himself from the middle of the pack in the NFL. He'll continue to be a volatile backup fantasy QB until he shows us differently.

Bears | Jay Cutler impressing coaches

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 17:52:26 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has impressed head coach John Fox with his attitude off the field, but Fox maintained that they're in a performance-based business, Wednesday, July 29. "No matter what we say about anybody, it's gonna come down to how we perform on Sundays or Mondays or whenever they line us up," said Fox. Cutler also spoke highly of Fox, and said he appreciates Fox's straight-shooting demeanor.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler entered his seventh training camp with the Bears, but he'll have a shorter leash than possibly ever before. Fantasy owners can consider Cutler as a late-round flier in standard leagues, as his starting job will be entirely dependent on his ability to keep possession of the football.

Bears | Jay Cutler running out of time

Sat, 18 Jul 2015 14:41:13 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler may need to win in 2015 to stay in Chicago, suggests Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. Cutler has over $47 million guaranteed remaining on his contract, but the Bears could move on if Cutler struggles again in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has thrown double-digit interceptions in all but one of his six seasons in Chicago. The Bears' offensive line can share some of the blame for Cutler's struggles, but he has enough weapons in the offense to post better numbers than he has been. Cutler shouldn't be drafted as a QB1 in 12-team leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler works out with teammates

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 09:08:19 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler worked out with some of his offensive teammates at Vanderbilt University this week. WR Eddie Royal, WR Kevin White and TE Martellus Bennett were among the players in attendance.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has had some down performances the last few seasons but should have several weapons to work with this season. Cutler probably is not a starting quarterback in fantasy at this point but could be a solid No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Bears | Jay Cutler confident in new offense

Tue, 16 Jun 2015 14:37:30 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler said he's feeling great about the offense under new offensive coordinator Adam Gase. "I know the guys like it. I know the receivers like it," Cutler said. "TE Martellus Bennett is going to love it when he gets involved. We just have to keep heading in the direction we are going and keep studying. We are not where we want to be yet."

Fantasy Tip: No matter how much Cutler talks up the offense, he's still not worthy of QB1 consideration. He's proven to be one of the most unreliable quarterbacks both in real life and in fantasy football. He's a solid backup quarterback for your fantasy squad(s).

Bears | Chicago OC comfortable with Jay Cutler

Sat, 09 May 2015 10:40:39 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has some familiarity with offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Gase and Cutler met when Cutler was still an NFL prospect, and Cutler was still with the Denver Broncos when Gase came to Denver. "I feel comfortable with him. We have a good relationship so far and we're just going to keep working to get better," Gase said.

Fantasy Tip: There seems to be some camaraderie developing between Cutler and Gase, if it hasn't already. That can only be a good sign as Cutler and his teammates try to adjust to a new coaching staff. Perhaps that new staff and a familiar offensive coordinator can help Cutler improve on his notorious erratic play. Cutler did throw a career-high 28 touchdowns in 2014, but he's still a QB2 in fantasy football.

Bears | Jay Cutler to be traded to Titans?

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 16:32:12 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is reportedly involved in trade talks in which the Bears would acquire the No. 2 overall selection from the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has been a disappointment for the most part with the Bears. Who knows how disappointing he'll be in a worse offense. If Cutler does get traded to the Titans, he should be considered a QB2.

Bears | Jay Cutler to face open competition

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 15:20:28 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will head into the offseason as the team's No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart, but head coach John Fox said there will be an "open competition" at the quarterback spot between Cutler and QB Jimmy Clausen during training camp and offseason workouts. The current coaching staff and general manager Ryan Pace have nothing vested in Cutler, and they've made it clear that money isn't the sole driver of their decisions.

Fantasy Tip: We find it hard to believe that Cutler won't eventually win the job over Clausen, who Fox also coached with the Carolina Panthers. Cutler will have to earn it, though, and his leash may become short during the season if he struggles. The loss of one of his favorite targets, Brandon Marshall, may hurt Cutler's overall production, too. Bottom line: Cutler is a QB2, at best, with room to move up if he works hard and gets himself in the good graces of his new staff.

Bears | Jay Cutler lacking confidence?

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 14:01:06 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler seemed to lack confidence last season, according to head coach John Fox. "I think maybe he got to the point where he lacked confidence a year ago. To build that back up, it's going to take time, daily. It takes trust, like any relationship."

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has been the recipient of much criticism during his tenure in Chicago, and that hasn't stopped this offseason. Brandon Marshall has left town and a new coaching regime has moved in, likely lessening Cutler's fantasy value to a certain extent. That doesn't mean he still doesn't have QB1 potential for 2015. That being said, it's risky to draft Cutler as a starting fantasy quarterback.

Bears | Jay Cutler to remain starter in Chicago

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 12:21:35 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will remain the starting quarterback in 2015, according to general manager Ryan Pace.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't really be a huge surprise as Cutler is certainly making starting quarterback money next season. He'll be without Brandon Marshall, however, which doesn't help his fantasy value. The Bears could still make some offseason moves, though. For now, Cutler is a fringe QB1.

Bears | Chicago tailoring playbook to Jay Cutler

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 11:43:21 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler, who is fully expected to be a part of the team's plans in 2015, will have the playbook tailored to his strengths by head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Cutler will earn $15.5 million this year on a contract that is fully guaranteed, but the new coaching regime may not hesitate to go in another direction if Cutler struggles early in the year. It's likely that the coaching staff sat down with Cutler and discussed his expectations for this season and how to reduce turnovers and bad decisions in a new scheme.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler remains a fantasy football enigma. He clearly has the talent to succeed in the NFL, but he remains a frustrating fantasy play on a weekly basis. The loss of Brandon Marshall could be significant, too. It remains to be seen if Cutler can flourish under a new coaching staff, but he still has enough talent around him on the offensive side of the ball to remain a viable fantasy option. Consider Cutler a shaky low-end QB1 and a safer backup fake quarterback in 2015.

Bears | Jay Cutler staying in Chicago

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 05:51:57 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is fully expected to be the starting quarterback in 2015, according to sources with knowledge of the team's thinking. One source was adamant that there was "absolutely zero truth" to recent reports that Cutler was being actively shopped for a potential trade.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler is still a low-end QB1. He'll just be 32 when the season begins, so a big year is not out of the question. However, it feels like that is said every year.

Titans | Jay Cutler headed to Nashville?

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 21:47:20 -0800

If the Chicago Bears decide to try and trade QB Jay Cutler, one NFL source said Friday, March 8, that the Tennessee Titans are the only realistic destination in terms of a trade. If Cutler is on the roster Thursday, March 12, a $10 million guarantee for 2016 kicks in.

Fantasy Tip: The future is murky for Cutler. If he remains in Chicago, the team just traded one of his biggest weapons away with Brandon Marshall now on the New York Jets. If he were to head to Tennessee, that team doesn't have anyone close to the caliber of Marshall or current Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery. His fantasy outlook isn't great for 2015.

Jets | Jay Cutler not an option for Jets

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 14:22:42 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is not receiving any trade interest from the New York Jets.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler could be traded this offseason, but it looks like he will not be wearing a Jets jersey. Cutler probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he is a starter next season.

Bears | Decision on Jay Cutler looming

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 16:39:32 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's contract is a concern, with the $10 million he's due for 2016 becoming fully guaranteed in one week.

Fantasy Tip: Fox has not received high praise from new head coach John Fox and seems to already be in the doghouse. The possibility of a trade still remains and could come to fruition within a week if the Bears feel that Cutler isn't worth the money. Stay tuned.

Bears | John Fox non-committal on Jay Cutler

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 11:43:05 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler did not receive a vote of confidence from head coach John Fox. Fox said the team is still evaluating the position. Fox said he wants to get to know Cutler as part of that evaluation. "We're not up against a deadline," Fox said. "My experience has always been that you need to gather the information and in turn, you usually make better decisions. We're in that process, and we'll keep you posted."

Fantasy Tip: There is still a chance that Cutler could be traded before the beginning of next season. He should be considered a QB2 wherever he ends up, and a solid FantasyScore play when the matchup and price is favorable.

Bears | Jay Feely says Jay Cutler is not a leader

Thu, 29 Jan 2015 06:45:32 -0800

Chicago Bears PK Jay Feely said QB Jay Cutler isn't a leader off of the field. "That's not who he is. You're going to have a vacuum there," Feely said on Mad Dog Sports Radio. "So you have to know that as a general manager or a head coach, 'Hey, we're not going to have that leadership from this position, so we've really got to have other guys that are going to step up and are going to be our verbal leaders.'"

Fantasy Tip: Cutler will probably be the de facto starter entering the season. If he returns with a chip on his shoulder, he could be a nice find later in traditional league drafts.

Bears | Jay Cutler happy with coaching addition

Sun, 25 Jan 2015 18:06:05 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler reportedly once touted new quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains to be the quarterbacks coach in 2012. The two had a "strong, personal relationship."

Fantasy Tip: With this hiring it is hard to believe Cutler will be traded to another organization. For fantasy owners, Cutler will be a fringe QB1 in leagues of 12 or more teams and a solid daily play when the matchup and salary is favorable.

Bears | Jay Cutler's fate uncertain

Mon, 29 Dec 2014 14:12:46 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's fate will be determined by the team's next general manager and head coach, according to team president Ted Phillips.

Fantasy Tip: There is a chance that Cutler could be traded or released this offseason if the new regime does not think he is a fit. Cutler probably will be a starting quarterback in 2015 but should be considered as a No. 2 quarterback on most fantasy teams.

Bears | Jay Cutler talks up Mike Shanahan

Mon, 29 Dec 2014 02:06:47 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler told media that Mike Shanahan, who was Cutler's coach with the Denver Broncos, should be a head coach somewhere. "My three years with him were very, very enjoyable. He does a great job of leading teams, on and off the field, and offensively he knows how to get it done," Cutler said. Shanahan has been mentioned in some circles as a coaching candidate if Marc Trestman is fired.

Bears | Jay Cutler likely will start

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 11:43:36 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is expected to be the starting quarterback in Week 17, with QB David Fales being the No. 2 quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler would be starting in place of Jimmy Clausen, who will miss the game because of a concussion. Cutler could be seen as a low-end No. 1 quarterback on FantasyScore at $5,555 with some upside since the Minnesota Vikings have struggled at times against quarterbacks.

Bears | Jay Cutler expected to remain with team

Sun, 21 Dec 2014 09:56:26 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is expected to remain with the team, because his contract and recent performance may make it tough the team to move him. Cutler's 2015 salary of $16 million is fully guaranteed and $10 million of his $16 million salary in 2016 will become guaranteed on March 13. It is not believed Cutler would alter his contract in order to facilitate a trade, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler likely will sit out the last two games of the season, so he should not be an option for owners in any league. Cutler could be a better option next season if the team brings in a new coaching staff.

Titans | Jay Cutler could land in Nashville

Sun, 21 Dec 2014 07:10:54 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is receiving trade interest from the Tennessee Titans. If the Titans landed him, it would alter the 2015 NFL Draft board dramatically.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler would do Kendall Wright's fantasy value well. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as it's likely to be a hot topic this offseason.

Bears | Jay Cutler wants to stay in Chicago

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 16:34:36 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler hopes to stay with the team beyond the 2014 season. Cutler signed a seven-year, $126.7 million extension a few months ago and was benched Wednesday, Dec. 17, in favor of QB Jimmy Clausen.

Fantasy Tip: While Cutler obviously isn't an option on FantasyScore for Week 16, the possibility remains that he will start again next week. Clausen ($3,500) should only be rostered if you're looking to spend big at other positions.

Bears | Jay Cutler to start next week?

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 13:02:13 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler was benched just for this week against the Detroit Lions, according to head coach Marc Trestman. Cutler will be active and serve as the backup in Week 16. "We're not playing well enough at the quarterback position on a consistent basis," Trestman said.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler could theoretically come back to play in the season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, but it also probably depends on how Jimmy Clausen fares this weekend. Either way, Cutler shouldn't be a popular FantasyScore selection if he returns to start in the season finale.

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 15:34:54 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will be benched in favor of QB Jimmy Clausen in Week 16 against the Detroit Lions, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Don't even think about going with Clausen ($3,500) at FantasyScore against a strong Lions defense. You can downgrade all of the Bears' offensive weapons surrounding Clausen this week, too.

Bears | Jay Cutler's time ticking?

Sat, 13 Dec 2014 14:49:15 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's time as the starting quarterback could be ticking, in the opinion of NationalFootballPost.com's Jason Butt. The Bears promoted QB David Fales to the 53-man roster Saturday, Dec. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler ($6,300; 12.6% of your cap) isn't a good start this week on FantasyScore. Butt's opinion was that promoting a third quarterback this late in the season is a curious move. The team could turn to Jimmy Clausen in the weeks to come.

Bears | Brandon Marshall talks Jay Cutler

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 12:59:51 -0800

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall recently said he would have buyer's remorse regarding the team paying QB Jay Cutler a seven-year, $126 deal. However, Marshall did add that the blame for the Bears' offensive struggles doesn't solely lie on Cutler's shoulders. "It doesn't always fall on him. I guess that's why those guys are the highest paid players out there. Because when you win and everything is going good, they get all the glory. And when it's bad, they take more [blame] than what they should take.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Cutler's on-field shortcomings, he does have a superb matchup versus the New Orleans Saints this week. He'll cost $6,300 on FantasyScore if you want to plug him in your lineups. Marquess Wilson, Marshall's replacement, is also a nice option at just $3,000.

Bears | Brandon Marshall supports Jay Cutler

Mon, 08 Dec 2014 20:11:05 -0800

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall said he supports QB Jay Cutler, but he also said that he doesn't understand why the team's offense has been so out of sync this season.

Fantasy Tip: Marshall has suffered through the worst season since his rookie year, and while he is out for the year, the fantasy value of all Chicago's remaining offensive weapons is likely to continue to fluctuate over the final weeks as the Bears continue to play inconsistent football.

Fri, 05 Dec 2014 17:55:40 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will remain the team's starting quarterback the rest of the season as long as he is healthy, according to head coach Marc Trestman.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler leads the NFL with 21 turnovers, but he also ranks fifth in passing yards and sixth in touchdowns. He could make a decent fantasy option in Week 15 when the Bears take on a New Orleans team ranked 29th against the pass.

Bears | Mixed results for Jay Cutler

Sun, 16 Nov 2014 13:50:53 -0800

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler completed 72 percent of his throws for a 98.0 passer rating and three touchdowns in Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings. However, he also threw two interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: For fantasy purposes, Cutler's 330 yards and two scores was just fine. For real-life purposes, another multiple turnover game is quite concerning. He'll face a very leaky pass defense in Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he'll be a nice value for FantasyScore owners. In standard leagues which penalize turnovers, he is a little less attractive from a fantasy perspective.

Bears | Jay Cutler turning ball over frequently

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 09:10:38 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler threw an interception and fumbled twice in the team's Week 7 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Cutler has turned the ball over multiple times in all four of the team's losses this year, but he hasn't turned the ball over once in any of the team's three wins. The Bears opponents have scored 37 total points off Cutler's turnovers this year. He was sacked three times and finished with a passer rating of 74.4 against the Dolphins with 190 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: It's been a Jekyll and Hyde season so far for Cutler. He's a matchup play right now, and he'll be on the road against the New England Patriots in Week 8, which could be another tough game.

Bears | Brandon Marshall unhappy with QB

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 15:09:39 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall called out QB Jay Cutler in a heated locker room discussion after the team's Week 7 loss against the Miami Dolphins, a source said Sunday, Oct. 19. The source said there "are some very selfish individuals in the locker room." But it's not out of the ordinary for Marshall to strongly voice his opinion to Cutler, as the two are close friends off the field. Marshall also reportedly yelled at PK Robbie Gould.

Fantasy Tip: The argument shouldn't affect fantasy values any, and it is just part of football, competition and losing. If the Bears won this game, obviously things would be just fine.

Bears | Jay Cutler praised by head coach

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 11:59:56 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has impressed head coach Marc Trestman with how intelligent and selfless he's been to better the team. Trestman also said he's been impressed with Cutler's skillset and football smarts.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has had QB1 potential his whole career, but hasn't really had that perfect season yet or proven he's worthy of QB1 status. He played well last year before an ankle injury, but it's best to draft him as a QB2 for now.

Bears | Jay Cutler cleans up fundamentals

Sun, 29 Jun 2014 07:33:32 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has made tremendous strides cleaning up his fundamentals this offseason, according to quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh. "I've seen incredible progress," Cavanaugh said. "When we got in here last year & evaluated him we had a real good conversation with him about certain things that every quarterback should do. We said, 'Jay it might not be natural, but we want you to try it.' And he did" "To his credit, he's taken every suggestion we've given and he's embraced it. From how he holds the ball to how he lines up in the`Gun' pre-snap to how he drops back, to his throwing base to his follow-through. Every little fundamental we've talked to him about, he's embraced, and it's like night & day."

Bears | Jay Cutler bigger and stronger

Tue, 10 Jun 2014 10:57:35 -0700

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman said QB Jay Cutler has made his durability a priority this offseason, and the quarterback has become bigger and stronger as a result. "He's bigger, he's stronger than a year ago, and he has really focused on staying physically well for the entire season. That's No. 1 -- we've got to keep him standing, keep him safe. And we see the improvements he's made in working on different issues in his mechanics, and I think he's feeling very comfortable back there in Year 2," Trestman said.

Fantasy Tip: If it weren't for Cutler's penchant to miss chunks of games each season due to injury, he'd be a no-doubt QB1 with plenty of upside. In Chicago's pass-happy offense with arguably two of the best and most physical wide receivers in the league, there still is upside from Cutler, but it comes with plenty of risk. He's a low-end QB1 that needs to be paired with a capable backup.
